I don't think they'll allow it. I think they are looking for the actual word heart due to Valentine's Day. Personally I'm not a rules lover, but they stick to the guidelines pretty tightly for this challenge.

I have this coming in the mail- did you enjoy it? Maybe I'll use this for my 700 pages challenge also. I forgot it was that long!

message 968: by Julie J (new)

Julie J | 45 comments I joined this group so I could do the winter challenge. I've never done anything like this before, but the list is very creative. I'm way behind, but I'll try anyways! Since December 1st I have read:
90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper (5 points - #5 a book from my TBR pile)
Sammy's Hill by Kristin Gore (15 points - #10 Book about politics)
and I'm half way through the book and sequel one.
So so far I'm at 20 points.

message 969: by Julie J (new)

Julie J | 45 comments Would you count the book Freckles for "a book with a title containing the name of a body part"?

message 970: by Liz M (last edited Jan 03, 2009 11:12AM) (new)

Liz M Cynthia: for the various author-related tasks if there is more than one author do both have to qualify? For example: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows, is the first book for only one of the authors. Also, one of the authors died in 2008.

message 971: by Nicole (new)

message 974: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Liz, the answer will be 1 task only.

message 975: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Fiona - Liz is just wondering if, for a book with 2 authors, both authors have to qualify for a particular task in order for us to be able to count it. I don't think they both do, but I'm interested to see what Cynthia has to say about it, as I was planning on counting Guernsey for the "author who died this year" category.

message 976: by Sera (new)

Sera Jon, Like Water for Chocolate is a very good book. I've never seen the movie, but if you liked it, then I think that you would enjoy the books as well. There are some mystical elements to it, but overall it's food interwoven with the stories of the members of one family. I found it to be very light, but entertaining :) Let me know how you like it when you get around to reading it.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments just finished Love Is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time by Rob Sheffield for the "Read A Book By A New, First Time Author" challenge for 5 points.

message 980: by Heather (new)

Heather Jan and Julie - welcome to the winter challenge! I hope I didn't miss any other newcomers.

Julie - I don't think Freckles will count as a body part, but Cynthia will let you know.

What happened to Ros? Does anyone know? She started out in a reading frenzy but hasn't been back.

message 981: by Jon (last edited Jan 03, 2009 02:30PM) (new)

Jon Whats everyones thoughts on Audiobooks? - I know theyre allowed as per rules, so I gave one a try for Memoirs of a Geisha. Still cant make up my mind as to whether I feel I've actually read it. I'ts kinda nice having someone read something to you like when you were a kid (If they do it well - In this case the Japanese accent was cute and sounded authentic), but also feel i missed out somehow on turing the pages, discovering passages for yourself and re-reading lines that you find particularly pleasing. It certainly makes a car journey go quicker but I don't think I feel that I've read that book as such, definately not as satisfying to me. I've got 'Silent Night' in the car now - I've only just started it and cant wait for it to be over - Damn You Winter Challenge! LOL. I feel like throwing it out the car window! Ill stick to the printed word for the rest I think (not that in this case It would have been a great improvement).

Now - back to 'The Hours' (good old fashioned printed words) so I can update my points later on, Thank You Winter Challenge! I'm loving it, I think its my new favourite book, I keep wanting to stroke the pages, I'ts so beautiful. And isnt it funny how Meryl Streep is mentioned at least 3 times. I wonder what she thought when she read it before playing the character who sees herself in the street filming the movie.

message 982: by Jon (new)

Jon What happened to Ros? Does anyone know? She started out in a reading frenzy but hasn't been back.

yes... I have a suspicion Ros and Darla will be back any minute with an extra hundred a piece after quietly beavering away in a corner somewhere over the festive season!

message 983: by Heather (new)

Heather I've used one audio cd for the challenge so far and I'll probably use a few more. I have a 25 minute commute to work so that's 50 minutes a day, I can't read. I've tried reading and driving and I don't recommend it! The audio books I've listened to are ones I'm not sure I want to read. I wanted to listen to Silent Night on audio but my library didn't have it so I ended up reading it. Sorry Jon, it probably won't get much better for you ;-) I tried listening to The Hours one time on a long drive, but quickly realized it was a book I wanted to read myself so I put in another audio book.

Personally, reading is a full body expericence for me. I love the feel and heft of a book, the smell, the print, the papers between my fingers, etc.

What task are you using The Hours for in the challenge?

message 984: by Heather (new)

Heather Jon wrote:
yes... I have a suspicion Ros and Darla will be back any minute with an extra hundred a piece ..."

Oh dear, in that case maybe I don't want them back. Nah, I'm not that petty. I'm just fascinated by Ros' work with the Christmas Shoebox and was wondering more about it.

Angela | 1934 comments Has anyone asked if we can use 'dance' in place of 'dancer' for the task with the reindeer's names.

The book I was orginally going to use is not available at any of the libraries, Amazon, B & N, or Borders.

message 987: by Cynthia (last edited Jan 03, 2009 07:04PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments WHEW - you guys were busy today while I was out but I updated the score board - hopefully I got everyone's points up to date and now I'll try to answer everyone's ?'s.

ANDREW - no The Art of Racing in the Rain is not acceptable for either task.

JEANE - pluralization of words is acceptable

(G)EMMA - If you did complete that task please post your points so I can update your score.

JULIE - Sorry but freckles is not an acceptable word for that task - but I'm glad my challenge brought you to this wonderful group

LIZ - Author challenge requirements will relate only to the first author listed on the book...so if the first author fits the criteria but the second doesn't it will still count but if the criteria fits the second but not the primary author then no it doesn't count.

JON - Yeah I'm not a fan of audiobooks - some people really like them but I need to have the book in front of me and let the words filter through my own head without someone else voice interfering with it - I totally LOLed about the whole Damn You Winter Challenge/Thank You Winter Challenge thing.

ANGELA - In the case of the reindeer one dance instead of dancer is not a fit for the challenge.

GOOD JOB EVERYONE!!! I need to get back to reading - you guys are flying past me here.

It's open at all the wrong times for me, and I have to leave my son alone for about 2 hours to get there and back, but I will make the effort!!

I don't even know what books they have!! Years ago there was nothing much... speriamo bene!!
