If anyone is looking for another fiction book that fits this challenge, I highly recommend Four Spirits: A Novel by Sena Jeter Naslund. It takes place in Birmingham Alabama in 1963 and "weaves together the lives of blacks and whites, racists and civil rights advocates, and the events of peaceful protest and violent repression to create both an intimate and epic tapestry of American social transformation."
