Tiffany Just finished reading Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer for 25 points. (It was over 700 pages).

message 452: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) I have completed 2 books for the challenge.

5Pt Task (5)
6. Read A Book By A New, First Time Author.
Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl

10 Pt task (10)
3. For Christmas: Read a Book with Any of the Following in the Title: Angel, Miracle, God, Jesus, Shepherd, Manger, Wise Man, Mary, or Joseph.
Angela and the Baby Jesus

This brings my total to 30.

message 453: by Liz M (new)

Liz M I am also using this list to reduce my tbr pile, which leads to many questions.

Karen, are England, Scotland, & Wales acceptable countries for your challenge--officially they are part of the United Kingdom, but we refer to authors from the UK as English, Welsh, Scottish or British....

Cynthia, for the candy challenge can I read In Watermelon Sugar and eat a watermelon jolly rancher candy?

For the title containing "Angel, Miracle, God, Jesus...." would The Last Temptation of Christ qualify?

Anybody out there know of books with Stagehands or other theater-backstage people as main characters? Or know how I can work Stardust in? (haven't seen the movie & already have read a book for that challenge)

message 454: by Sarenna (new)

Sarenna (djsthree) | 63 comments 5 POINT TASK

3. For Valentine’s Day: Read a Romance Novel.

My French Whore - A Love Story by Gene Wilder

total points: 35

message 455: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Liz - it's pushing it a bit but I'll accept that for the challenge (the candy one). Christ would be acceptable for that other challenge.

message 456: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) Ha! Sarenna, how was that book by Gene Wilder? I want to read that soon, he's so funny.

message 457: by Ros (new)

Ros I am on my second book now. I read eat pray love -Elizabeth Gilbert for the title with love

I am now reading A wedding in December - Anita Shreve for title with December

Just been to the library and got some books to help me on some of the tasks and also brought A Christmas Carol so I have a copy myself and so I can read it to start another challenge.

I got Attoment on dvd and got the book the other day for the addapted screenplay challenge.

Still a few challenges to sort yet. Will post my list of what I will read as soon as I have sorted them.

message 458: by Heather (new)

Heather What do you guys think about if I used "The Love Dare" as my "read a book you have already seen the movie to" book? It is the basis for what happens in the movie "Fireproof," but it isn't really the story of the movie. It's how they came up with the idea for the movie. Just curious what your thoughts were!

message 459: by Laura (last edited Dec 10, 2008 10:26AM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) QUESTION - It’s Winter: Read A Book Whose Title Contains a Winter Weather Word – i.e. Blizzard, Snow, Ice, Sleet, Icicle, Snowflake, Frost, Freeze, Slush, Flurry, Chill, Or Hail.

Would The Cat Who Came in from the Cold work?

I figure since winter weather is sometimes only "cold" without snow, or whatnot, that it should be OK.

message 460: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) 2. For The Holiday Season: Read a Book with a Holiday Song in the Title. SILENT NIGHT - MARY HIGGINS CLARK (10pts)

Cynthia, I have read this & my points are now 25pts hun xx

message 461: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments It’s Winter: Read A Book Whose Title Contains a Winter Weather Word – i.e. Blizzard, Snow, Ice, Sleet, Icicle, Snowflake, Frost, Freeze, Slush, Flurry, Chill, Or Hail.
Holidays on Ice-David Sedaris 12/10

New Total: 10pts @ 12/10

message 462: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Jaime, what did you think of Holidays on Ice?

message 463: by Sarenna (last edited Dec 10, 2008 01:28PM) (new)

Sarenna (djsthree) | 63 comments Lindsey - I really enjoyed the book. It was super fast reading (I think it took me all of 2 hours). I thought it was funny in parts, but the weird thing is that I kept picturing the main character as Gene Wilder. Not that he fits the description, I could just see it as a movie with a younger version of him playing the part of Harry (Paul). Maybe I've watched his movies one to many times? :)

Tien (tiensblurb) Liz wrote: "I am also using this list to reduce my tbr pile, which leads to many questions.

Hi, Liz.... yes, it's fine :)

message 465: by Beth F (last edited Dec 10, 2008 02:08PM) (new)

Beth F | 342 comments 5 Point Task
1 – Written by an African-American: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (finished 12/10/08).

Randomly, it turns out that Hurston and I share a birthday: January 7. Although I was not born in 1891. :P

Points: 5/375

message 466: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments Read A Book That Takes Place In A Country That Is Part Of Your Ancestry (I.E. If Your Irish Read A Book That Takes Place In Ireland Or About Ireland).

I read GATHERING STORM by Rosie Dub set in Australia.
Total = 15 points

message 467: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Jen-I thought it was ok...The first story I thought was good but didnt really care for the rest that much. The last story was alright too but the ones in the middle I just didnt find as funny as I thought they would be.

message 468: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments Pick 10 Books From Your TBR List, Pick One Out Of A Basket Or A Hat Whatever You Can Find, And Then Read That Book.
One for the Money by Janet Evanovich for 5 pts
Total = 20 pts

message 469: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) 6. Read A Book That Takes Place In A Country That Is Part Of Your Ancestry (I.E. If Your Irish Read A Book That Takes Place In Ireland Or About Ireland).

I finally did it. I finished The Book Thief. What a book. Anyway, I'm mostly German. Not that I'm thrilled about it, esp. after reading this! But that's another 10 points.

Total: 15 points

message 470: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Heather - yes you may use that book for the movie challenge.

Laura - I think I already told someone that cold wasn't specific enough for that task.

message 473: by Elizabeth (NC) (new)

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford--first time author. It doesn't officially come out until January, but I highly recommend it.
That puts me at a whopping 10 points--leaders better watch out, I'm moving up!!

Couple of questions--Does Skin count as a body part?
and I'm assuming Miracles will count for the one that lists Jesus, Miracle...etc.
Thanks!

message 474: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) As the body's largest organ, I would imagine skin would count, but you'll have wait for Cynthia's approval.

message 475: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments my reading is really slowing down now.

still I've made my first task:

9. The Oscar’s are coming: Read a Book or Play Whose Movie Counterpart Was Nominated or That Won in the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay Category and Watch the Film. the book/film was Atonement: A Novel

15 points for me

message 476: by Ros (new)

Ros Thats what I am going to read and watch. Which way round do we have to do it read the book first or watch the film first?

message 477: by Sera (new)

Sera I believe that the challenge says film first?

message 478: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Nope, it says read the book first.

9. The Oscar’s are coming: Read a Book or Play Whose Movie Counterpart Was Nominated or That Won in the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay Category and Watch the Film.

message 479: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) OK is it just me or does it really matter? Does it really matter the order? As long as you do both?

message 480: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments hehe, naughty Laura.

message 481: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I don't think it matters either way. The object is to do both, right?

message 482: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) No I mean seriously. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I'm just curious.

message 483: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ha ha! Laura, didn't see your post. I agree, I don't think it matters. :-)

message 484: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Right. I think.

(Latest task completed is in bold.)

message 486: by Alyssa (last edited Dec 11, 2008 12:41PM) (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments actually laura i think it matters because there is another challenge where you watch the film first...

Also, you can't use cold for the winter weather word. i already asked. it isn't specific enough

message 487: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments 5 points- Read a book you've already seen the film to
Stardust by Neil Gaiman

Total: 15 points

i like that we just read the same book angie :)

message 488: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Angie, how was Miracle on 34th Street by Valentine Davies?

message 489: by Angie (last edited Dec 11, 2008 02:17PM) (new)

Angie (angie) Jeane, it was cute, but not great. I felt the writing was very...sparse. I like detail and description. This is one book where I'd have to say I like the movie version better.

Alyssa, what did you think?

message 490: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) 5 Point Task:
3. For Valentine’s Day: Read a Romance Novel.

Born in Shame by Nora Roberts

20 points so far! Yay me.

OK - Cynthia - I have a question for you. I think I'll PM you.

message 491: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Elizabeth - yes skin counts, so does the pluralization of words listed on different tasks.

For the task where you have to watch the film and read the book that was nominated or won an adapted screenplay oscar - I don't care what order you do it in although most people like to watch the film after they read the book.

The order does make a difference for the other movie task (the one where you read a book you've already seen the film to) obviously for that one you have to see the movie first and then read the book (if you haven't already seen the film pre-challenge).

and reading the book really improved my viewing of the film

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments Has anyone read The Memory Keeper's Daughter? I was thinking it might work for the main character having a mental/physical disability, but I don't know if the child with Down Syndrome is actually a main character or just a catalyst for the story. Thanks.

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I have read it, and I would think think that would apply. But what do you think Cynthia?
