Sarah Louise (keytan) this is my first big challenge, flip it's going to be a lot harder than I first thought

message 102: by Sarah Louise (new)

Sarah Louise (keytan) how do you do the text link to a book?

message 103: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Use the "add book/author" above the posting box. Enter the title, click search, choose the one you want and it will add the link for you.

This will be my first long challenge and I have a really silly question. What is the definition of "historical fiction" that you are using?

I only ask because I was doing a challenge last year where they were using the definition of any story that takes place at least 50 years ago, regardless of its publication date --- so Pride and Prejudice was considered HF.

We go by a rule of a setting 50 years prior to when it was published, so classics that were contemporary when they were published, like P&P, would not count.

If it was published in 2012, it would need to be set in 1962 or earlier. Published in 1812, it would need to be 1762 or earlier.. etc.

Next question, for the presidential task, does the book need to be during the actual presidency. Example, I've had Founding Brothers on my TBR for a while now, but I think most of the book is about the time before they were presidents.

If it touches some on their presidency I'll accept it.

message 108: by Shay (new)

Shay | 86 comments Not all of these books would work, obviously. Not all have enough green. They also aren't necessarily HF, but there's a listopia for green books:

April | 181 comments For task 20.2 (HF book to make English teacher proud), wouls The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn count? It was written in 1884 and set before the Civil War, but I'm not sure how far forward.

I checked wiki, but it's not clear. However, quite a few people have it shelved as HF so I'll take it.

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Derrick wrote: "How about something like these for Microhistory?

Eruptions That Shook The World

Radioactivity: A History of a Mysterious Science"

Just from reading the discriptions it seems like both would count as microhistory.

Thanks! I keep saying I'm going to read it but never do. Now I can.

Melissa (rockstarninja) Do you count Arthurian legend as Historical Fiction?

I do the same thing! It's been on my list for a few years now.

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Melissa wrote: "Do you count Arthurian legend as Historical Fiction?"

We don't, but you can use it for other non-HF tasks.

ok

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I have some questions for the HF with a green cover. Would The Kitchen God's Wife be considered HF? Also would Isolde, Queen of the Western Isle (Tristan and Isolde, #1) by Rosalind Miles work as well?

message 119: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 499 comments I've read The Kitchen God's wife and it's HF for sure, and a really good book.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments Thanks Jen C.

Since King Arthur isn't HF, I'm assuming that means that no historical fantasy is considered HF for the bonus point. I was planning to read Throne of Jade Throne of Jade (Temeraire, #2) by Naomi Novik as my green cover. The book is set during the Napoleanic wars, but dragons are a part of the military (sky calvary ;-). Please confirm.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I like that:) Dragons are sky calvary.

message 123: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Sorry JoLene, but historical fantasy will not be given HF bonus points.

message 124: by Shay (new)

Shay | 86 comments Jackie wrote: "Sorry JoLene, but historical fantasy will not be given HF bonus points."

So, it couldn't be used for that task at all because the task requires HF, right?

Green book that are HF, if anyone is looking:
Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly
The Yellow House by Patricia Falvey

message 125: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments That's correct Shay. :)

message 126: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kristinekae) | 238 comments I need help! I have been searching for a book published in 1964 that meets the page requirements and is available at my overdrive account. Not much luck...either childrens novels that are not long enough or not available for me....I would say it was not a good year for literature that I can see!

Try the above - has 200, I think, all published in 1964.

Ok, would A Poisoned Season (Lady Emily, #2) by Tasha Alexander work as a mostly gold cover. My backup is the new book called The Crown but it's still on order at the library so not sure that I would get it in time.

message 129: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments The book I wanted to use with a green cover is Beulah Land, a HF by Lonnie Coleman. The version I have is the cover that is shown in the above link, but it does not show the number of pages. The other versions of this book do not show page count either. The book I have is 536 pages and it is the one in the above link. Can I use it since there is not verification of pages on GRs? It gets a pretty high rating and I already had gotten it from PBS so I would like to use it, if possible.

The book you linked to- did you verify that the copy in your hand has the same ISBN? Does the page count you listed (536) include any numbered pages such as afterword, bibliography, about the author, etc. Not including any advertising for the book. If so, I'll update the page count for you on GR.

message 131: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments JoLene, I will accept that one for the task.

Lemonlinda, yes that's fine. I'll just take your word for it on the page count. I tried looking it up on other books sites and can't find a page count for it either.

message 132: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kristinekae) | 238 comments Thanks Linda...I think I have finally found one....may not be something I would usually pick but we'll see.

message 135: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Shay, the page count for Beulah Land that I gave (536) is book only - no afterword, author's page, etc.

Thanks for accepting it!

It's should be showing between now and 15 minutes or so the correct page count.

JC (jmnc) | 499 comments Does Pope Joan work for 15.1? As far as I can tell from descriptions and wikipedia she is a 'legend'. Otherwise, maybe some true event happens in the book?

message 141: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments JenC. wrote: "Does Pope Joan work for 15.1? As far as I can tell from descriptions and wikipedia she is a 'legend'. Otherwise, maybe some true event happens in the book?"

Unfortunately no because it's a fictional book and it's only about her life. If it was non-fiction and spanned from her life time until modern day then it would work.

message 142: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 499 comments not the microhistory one, but 15.1 - Keeping It Real! Read a HF book that has a real historical figure as a character or takes place around a historical event.

Margaret (readingwithmargaret) For 100 pts, does that just have to be from the 2011 lists? There is also a link for 2009 and 2010 on the same page, would those work also?

message 146: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Nope, just the 2011 list.
