I just read a memoir about Curtis Roosevelt (grandson to FDR). My husband's name is Kurt -- can I use this for my Oh Romeo task.
It's easier to find a book about a president than to find one with a characater named Kurt :-D

message 153: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments JoLene that would work :)

Diane S ☔ Kristine wrote: "Would Doc work for 20.1...I have not read it yet so if anyone knows I'd appreciate it. Thanks."

It should work since Doc is a historical figure as is Wyatt Earp and it ends with the shootout at the OK corral which I believe is a historical event. What do you think Jackie?

message 155: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments The thing is she asked about task 20.1, which is:
20.1 – Free At Last! In honor of African American History Month read a HF book that features slavery

I can't say since from reading the reviews I don't see anything mentioned, but it would definitely work for 15.1, which is about a historical person or event.

message 156: by Shay (new)

Shay | 86 comments I read Doc and I don't believe slavery played any part in the book. It took place around 1878- after the official abolition of slavery.

Thought that was the one she asked about. You are right there is no slavery in the book, my mistake.

message 158: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 499 comments For 10.1 - I'm reading a book for another task, but I've come across a character with the first name of Cornelius, and this is my husband's (and my) last name. Can I use it for this task? My strategy for this one is just to read books and hope I come across his name.

message 159: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (readingwithmargaret) For 15.3 - Looking for Me Pot o'Gold, would this cover be gold enough?
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese .
I am reading it for another group and trying to find a fit for this challenge.

Kristine (kristinekae) | 238 comments Shay wrote: "I read Doc and I don't believe slavery played any part in the book. It took place around 1878- after the official abolition of slavery."

After reading the first few pages, it only touches on the Civil War so I guess it won't work....but it does for task 100...a nominee...thanks all!

message 161: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments JenC, yes I would accept that.

Margaret, yes.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I was wondering would "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" work for 5.3 Super Powers-a character that has an enhanced sense. The main character can perform magic through the use of beads. She was raised by angels/demons who I would think have enhanced senses.

message 163: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Jayme, it sounds like it would count.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments okay, just wanted to check.

message 165: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I'd like to read Mosaic: A Chronicle of Five Generations by Diane Armstrong. Most of this book takes place during inernment in a concentration camp during the Holocause. While we don't raditionally think of these people as slaves, I'm not sure what we would call them. Could I use this book for the one about slavery?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I think I would consider them slaves based on how they were treated. Becky would be the final say though.

message 167: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks Jayme. I will wait for word from Becky.

I've had that on my tbr too! There are a lot of books about slavery world wide, so would that count or is it to be kept within American slavery?

message 169: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Hmm... I can see why you'd think of it that way, but I don't think that really counts as slavery the way the challenge task meant it. That wasn't the reason that Jews were rounded up, but they were put to work after they had been.

My personal opinion would be to say no, that it wouldn't count for the slavery task because the original reason for rounding up Jews was not to make slaves of them, but to exterminate them.

I'll let Jackie have the final say though, because this is her challenge.

Can we use a graphic novel for a task --- many are more than 200 pages.

JoLene wrote: "Can we use a graphic novel for a task --- many are more than 200 pages."

As long as the most popular edition on GR meets the 200 page limit, yes.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider the Holocaust slavery. To me it was genocide.

Yes, as long as it meets the page requirements.

message 174: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks for your thoughts. I have another book in mind which I know will fit the bill, Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill.

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Will 11/22/63 work for Task 10.3? I am reading it - about 1/3 into it - and the entire premise of the book is based around Kennedy's assasination and he is definitely listed in the Kindle book extras as a character in the book. But the main character is time traveling back in time to try to prevent his assassination.

I haven't read it, but from what I've heard of it the book works.

Would Kindred by Octavia E. Butler be considered HF? Would A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain be considered HF?

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments JoLene wrote: "Would Kindred by Octavia E. Butler be considered HF? Would A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain be considered HF?"

Kindred seems like it can count since she's going back to slave times. A CT Yankee in KA's court wouldn't be considered HF.

Kristine (kristinekae) | 238 comments can I use The Killer Angels for the book on slavery...sorry, forgot the tsk number...

message 183: by Jackie (new)

message 185: by Jackie (new)

message 186: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kristinekae) | 238 comments His name is Shane...and the only book I found is I think is from the movie of the same name but not to be found at my library.....his middle name is John...a little more common lol.

message 187: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Yeah, go with John. lol. I think I've only seen Shane used in paranormal romance books.

message 190: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (rockstarninja) Would you consider The Princess Bride historical fiction?
If so I was planning on using it for a green cover The Princess Bride by William Goldman

message 191: by Jackie (new)

Nick, Tim, Brian, John, Bob, Harry, Keith, Jason, Adam

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Margaret wrote: "Would The Adventures of Tom Sawyer count for 20.1 - Free At Last!?"

I would say no because it was published in 1876, but the story takes place in 1840's making it about a 36 year diffence instead of the required 50.

message 196: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Jayme, are you looking for HF or fantasy? The first one that comes to mind is the Lord John series (Lord John and the Private Matter) by Diana Gabaldon.

oops forgot to check the year, makes sense.

Ok how about this one A Voice in the Wind?
I want to get an audio for this task (plus be from by tbr pile too) since I have the others covered. Always try to have an audio on the go, especially now with spring arriving :)

message 198: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments That one looks like it will work :) Such a pretty cover too! Let me know what you think of it. I haven't tried Francine Rivers yet, but I hear wonderful things about her books. OH, and I agree on the audio. I love to go walking by the coast while listening to an audio book. It's so relaxing. :D

message 199: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I read two books by Francine Rivers last year. About three genrations of women which I really enjoyed.
