message 1653: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) I love the whole attitue of hobbits and how they live their lives - concerned more with good food, drink and simple pleasures then the raging conflicts of the outer world - not such a bad thing.

John Beachem | 373 comments Hello to all the new folks! It's officially impossible to keep up with this group, it's growing so fast. Anyway, welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy our massive collection of fantasy addicts.

message 1662: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Doyle (gretchenpage) Hiya! I'm Jenn and I live in Southern Arizona. I'm fairly new to the site and the group so I'm happy to find some people to follow/befriend. I'm also up for any book suggestions you may have! I work for a rather well-known, worldwide coffee shop you may have heard of ;) I'm a lover of all things crafty and artsy, the Green Bay Packers, Arthurian legend, I love hiking/camping/cycling, and playing the ukulele (I love jazz music!).

I'm excited to be a part of the group! :)

message 1663: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (katmax100) I'm Kathy from Sydney. I remember the first full book I read once I got out of baby books 1970s was a Doctor Who novel that was in the library and I've been hooked on SciFi and fantasy ever since.

Though I've found I no longer read Vampire books, romance or full on horror novels. It's a Been-there-done-that sort of thing whenever I wander away from SciFi and fantasy I find myself drawn back by the number of good authors who keep publishing new novels.

Sadie Hi everyone! My name is Sadie and I've been a member of this site for a while but never really explored it until now. Some of the authors I've been reading lately include Brandon Sanderson and Trudi Canavan. I'm pretty author-loyal so its hard for me to find new books because I'm so preoccupied reading books written by authors I know and love. I'm excited to get some new recommendations!

Welcome Sadie! Love Trudi Canavan especially her Age of the Five series (Priestess of the White). Someone I really liked immediately after reading her books was Jacqueline Carey. I loved her book Kushiel's Scion, its the first in a trilogy that's the second trilogy of a whole series if you get what I mean. basically its book 4, but also book one of 'Imriel's trilogy' and you can start of with it cause I personally think its the best out of all three trilogies. (lol I always have the worst time recommending this book properly)

Welcome, Debbie. We have a really great time here, and the discussions often get very interesting, indeed. Check out our author/members. We get insider info from them sometimes, on both the works and behind the scenes stuff, like bio and publisher stories. It's a nice perq.

message 1674: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka How do soft and hard fantasy differ?

message 1675: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dhaupt) hard fantasy from what's been described to me is mainstream, where soft is more like romance

message 1676: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka Thanks Debbie, I appreciate that.

message 1677: by Rosie (new)

Rosie Choiniere (rosiec) Hello everyone. My name is Rosie and I have never joined a book club before. I'm really excited!

In high school, a teacher noticed I was reading The Sword of Shannara, my very first Fantasy novel, and decided to bring 2 banana boxes full of her old fantasy books over to my house. I was ecstatic and ever since I have been a die-hard fantasy fan!

My favorite authors include Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin, Sara Douglass, Kristen Britain, and Elizabeth Hayden.

I look forward to doing a lot of posting and replying. :)

message 1682: by Becky (new)

Becky S'pose I should introduce myself. My name is Becky and the first book I can ever remember reading was a Illustrated Guide to World Mythology- it was a children's book but it was excellent. After that I think I was pretty set on fantasy. My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Mercedes Lackey (I find her to be a good book vacation), Peter V. Brett, Brent Weeks, Anne McCaffrey, Ayn Rand, and currently entering into the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett.

I dont have a fantasy preference, I enjoy high and low, so long as it has good characters and good plot with consistent rules for its environment I'll be content.

I spend a lot of my time volunteering for Project Gutenberg and Librivox.org, and working with classics has really given me a great appreciation for the development of fantasy and scifi as genres over the last couple of centuries.

message 1683: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka Hi Becky,

I am curious, what is meant by consistent rules for a fantasy environment?

message 1684: by Becky (new)

Becky I mean that the rules an author establishes for the own magic system need to be followed consistently throughout the book. I really hate when they'll say "It takes years to learn this..... oh, wait. You just learned it in two second? Huh. Good for you!" Or they violate their own rules some other way. Basically I dont like plot hole :D .

message 1685: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dhaupt) Thanks for the welcome and for all the tips, I'm relatively new to GoodReads but really enjoy the conversations here and of course follow some of my favorite authors and post the reviews that I don't sell.
My first love is Genre Fiction which of course includes all the sub-genres and then it's romance of the fantasy or paranormal variety. I love Karen Marie Moning her Fever series is one of the best out there, then of course there's JR Ward and Deborah Cooke and many more. My introduction into genre fantasy was through Paul Goat Allen who moderates that book club for B&N.com, I don't know too many people as knowledgeable about those genres which is where I met and fell in love with the works of Ken Scholes and from there many others and now I review fantasy for RT Reviews which is where I found the best Fantasy I've ever read by Mark Lawrence The Prince of Thorns and cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy. I look forward to chatting about everything with all of you.

message 1686: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka Thanks Becky, I appreciate it.

message 1687: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dhaupt) Hi Dawn I didn't really like alternate history either until I read Harry Turtledove, have you read him

message 1688: by S.A. (new)

S.A. Bolich (sabolich) Hi, I'm Sue, a confirmed fantasy fan since my best friend lent me LOTR when I was 14. I flew through them in 3 days and started looking for more. My goal in life was to write historical fiction; instead I got a history degree and ended up writing fantasy and alternate history with a fantasy twist. You know what they say about best laid plans! My first book (Firedancer) came out this month, after publishing a string of short stories ranging from high fantasy to SF. I love all types of fantasy, from epics like Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner series to the Dresden Files. Emma Bull's "War for the Oaks" remains one of my favorites, but I also deeply enjoyed Patricia McKillip's Riddlemaster series, just finished (and enjoyed) my first exposure to Guy Gavriel Kay's work, and grew up on Andre Norton. Dangle it in front of me, I'll probably try it! And I do love fantasy with an historical setting, like Naomi Novik's Temeraire. Glad to meet all of you.

message 1689: by Rick (new)

Rick F. (aggieflyboy) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Rick, I'm 35 and started reading Fantasy when I was 13 with LOTR. I am currently a huge fan of Gene Wolfe, Guy Guvriel Kay and Scott Lynch. I have an extreme dislike of Eddings, Jordan & Goodkind. I will give any author at least two shots.

message 1691: by Timberwolf (last edited Oct 01, 2011 08:57PM) (new)

Timberwolf (timberwolf1) I'm new to this group. I am very particular about the types of fantasy books. It is hard for me to find ones that I like. I have been known to read a lot of YA. I do read some graphic novels as well.

Authors I enjoy reading:
J.K. Rowling, D.J. Machale, C.S. Lewis, Robin Hobb

Author/subjects I have a problem reading
J.R.R. Tolkien
Tad Williams
Terry Goodkind
Brian Jacques
Stephanie Meyers

message 1692: by John (new)

John Beachem | 373 comments A warm welcome to all the new folks. Oh, and Rick, right there with you in regards to Eddings.

message 1693: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) Welcome all...and to Shane have you tried the Hunger Games. That's my favorite recent YA read.

message 1694: by Edward (new)

Edward Lazellari Hi all. I just finished George R.R. Martin's "A Dance With Dragons." Brilliantly written, but so long, felt like I was reading a Russian Novel from the turn of the 20th century. Only criticism is he left a lot of loose ends.

message 1695: by Timberwolf (new)

Timberwolf (timberwolf1) Michael wrote: "Welcome all...and to Shane have you tried the Hunger Games. That's my favorite recent YA read."

No I haven't.

message 1696: by Timberwolf (new)

Timberwolf (timberwolf1) No I haven't just started Assassin's Quest.

message 1697: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) I give Hunger Games high marks I'm also reading Ender's Game (Yeah I know I'm on a bit of a treadmill) but it is another very good YA read.

message 1698: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Ender's Game's very good...so is the hunger games.

Did I mention something about myself here already? Might as well.

I've read fantasy most of my life...well yeah. In fact it's my preferred novel read although I read widely. My favourite style of reading has changed though in recent years as I've moved into studying literature. I really appreciate classics now although I'll always love fantasy a heap. I'll read mainstream fantasy but if I find a fantasy novel that's not so popular but is brilliant I'll read it too.

message 1699: by Zeljka (last edited Oct 06, 2011 11:40PM) (new)

Zeljka (ztook) Hello everyone,

I am Zeljka, 30 years old Croatian book-lover. I do not prefer any genre above all, but my favourite authors are fantasy ones:
J.R.R. Tolkien Tolkien,
George R.R. Martin Martin,
Michael Ende Ende,
C.S. Lewis Lewis,
and
Neil Gaiman Gaiman.
Ok, Gaiman's opus is genre itself ;-)

message 1700: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 09, 2011 07:10AM) (new)

Hello all, I live in the Midwest, near the Great Lakes. I've read books in nearly every genre though now I prefer to read Fantasy most of the time.
Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin, Robert E. Howard, Raymond Feist, Mercedes Lackey, Jennifer Roberson, Naomi Novik.

As evidenced by my photo, Halloween is my favorite holiday. I just really love this time of year. ;)
