I'm Kathy from Sydney. I remember the first full book I read once I got out of baby books 1970s was a Doctor Who novel that was in the library and I've been hooked on SciFi and fantasy ever since.

Though I've found I no longer read Vampire books, romance or full on horror novels. It's a Been-there-done-that sort of thing whenever I wander away from SciFi and fantasy I find myself drawn back by the number of good authors who keep publishing new novels.

Welcome Sadie! Love Trudi Canavan especially her Age of the Five series (Priestess of the White). Someone I really liked immediately after reading her books was Jacqueline Carey. I loved her book Kushiel's Scion, its the first in a trilogy that's the second trilogy of a whole series if you get what I mean. basically its book 4, but also book one of 'Imriel's trilogy' and you can start of with it cause I personally think its the best out of all three trilogies. (lol I always have the worst time recommending this book properly)

Hello everyone. My name is Rosie and I have never joined a book club before. I'm really excited!

In high school, a teacher noticed I was reading The Sword of Shannara, my very first Fantasy novel, and decided to bring 2 banana boxes full of her old fantasy books over to my house. I was ecstatic and ever since I have been a die-hard fantasy fan!

My favorite authors include Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin, Sara Douglass, Kristen Britain, and Elizabeth Hayden.

I look forward to doing a lot of posting and replying. :)

S'pose I should introduce myself. My name is Becky and the first book I can ever remember reading was a Illustrated Guide to World Mythology- it was a children's book but it was excellent. After that I think I was pretty set on fantasy. My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Mercedes Lackey (I find her to be a good book vacation), Peter V. Brett, Brent Weeks, Anne McCaffrey, Ayn Rand, and currently entering into the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett.


I dont have a fantasy preference, I enjoy high and low, so long as it has good characters and good plot with consistent rules for its environment I'll be content.

I spend a lot of my time volunteering for Project Gutenberg and Librivox.org, and working with classics has really given me a great appreciation for the development of fantasy and scifi as genres over the last couple of centuries.

I mean that the rules an author establishes for the own magic system need to be followed consistently throughout the book. I really hate when they'll say "It takes years to learn this..... oh, wait. You just learned it in two second? Huh. Good for you!" Or they violate their own rules some other way. Basically I dont like plot hole :D .

Thanks for the welcome and for all the tips, I'm relatively new to GoodReads but really enjoy the conversations here and of course follow some of my favorite authors and post the reviews that I don't sell.
My first love is Genre Fiction which of course includes all the sub-genres and then it's romance of the fantasy or paranormal variety. I love Karen Marie Moning her Fever series is one of the best out there, then of course there's JR Ward and Deborah Cooke and many more. My introduction into genre fantasy was through Paul Goat Allen who moderates that book club for B&N.com, I don't know too many people as knowledgeable about those genres which is where I met and fell in love with the works of Ken Scholes and from there many others and now I review fantasy for RT Reviews which is where I found the best Fantasy I've ever read by Mark Lawrence The Prince of Thorns and cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy. I look forward to chatting about everything with all of you.

Hi, I'm Sue, a confirmed fantasy fan since my best friend lent me LOTR when I was 14. I flew through them in 3 days and started looking for more. My goal in life was to write historical fiction; instead I got a history degree and ended up writing fantasy and alternate history with a fantasy twist. You know what they say about best laid plans! My first book (Firedancer) came out this month, after publishing a string of short stories ranging from high fantasy to SF. I love all types of fantasy, from epics like Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner series to the Dresden Files. Emma Bull's "War for the Oaks" remains one of my favorites, but I also deeply enjoyed Patricia McKillip's Riddlemaster series, just finished (and enjoyed) my first exposure to Guy Gavriel Kay's work, and grew up on Andre Norton. Dangle it in front of me, I'll probably try it! And I do love fantasy with an historical setting, like Naomi Novik's Temeraire. Glad to meet all of you.

I've read fantasy most of my life...well yeah. In fact it's my preferred novel read although I read widely. My favourite style of reading has changed though in recent years as I've moved into studying literature. I really appreciate classics now although I'll always love fantasy a heap. I'll read mainstream fantasy but if I find a fantasy novel that's not so popular but is brilliant I'll read it too.
