Introductions - tell us a little about yourself

My favorite authors include Tamora Pierce and Kristin Cashore. I've also read a lot by Marion Zimmer Bradley and I started the audiobooks of George R.R. Martin, but dropped them some time ago. I'm planning however to get into them again, just don't know when I have the time for such complex works.

Some of my favorite authors include
Robert Jordan
David Eddings
Brent Weeks
Christopher Paolini
Peter V. Brett
Jim Butcher

I adore the Assassin's series of books by Robin Hobb and also her Tawny man series. I was heartbroken to finish them as I fell completely in love with Fitz and the Fool and of course, Nighteyes.
I'm also a fan of the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey, though I have yet to finish them all ( there's SO many of them! )
Other authors I like are
Anne McCaffrey
Tad Williams
David Eddings
Simon R Greene
There's always more but I have a mind like a sieve. :)

I just had to reply cos I love Robin Hobb, and recently just finished reading Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel Legacy, and really enjoyed it.
I just had to wonder, why GRRM wasn't on the list of authors you like.
And since you like Robin Hobb, who else have you read that has similar works to her?

That might exactly be the reason why I didn't pursue reading his books the first time (actually I listened to the audiobooks), it seemed quite tedious to hear about small characters and not getting to the point with the main characters.

I've not read anything by GRRM and I've been meaning to and looking forward to it from what I've heard.
I haven't read anything that is very similar to Robin Hobb but I've been having a look and Joanne Bertin's The Last Dragonlord looks quite promising.
I could happily read Kushiel's Dart over and over, just need to get hold of the others to read.

@ Christina,,,,, what authors do you like?

I like R.A. Salvatore, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, and Brent Weeks. I also love GRRM's books but I'm unhappy with him at the moment and refuse to be happy with him until he finishes his series! : )

I'm an aspiring novelist currently working on my first book (Fantasy) and also studying with the Open University for a diploma in creative writing and literature! :-)
Favourite authors include:
James Patterson
Mark Charan Newton
Raymond E Feist
Paul Hoffman
There are only a few favourite ones that I can honestly say have written books that have had me hooked! :-P

My name is Ben. I'm an IT guy that tries to read widely (the odd literature classic and award winner) but keep coming back the simple joys of fantasy and science fiction (simple as I find them easy reading :-)
Some of my favorite fantasy authors are Robin Hobb and Stephan Donaldson. I'm big into reading ebooks and have got a electronic copy of this months book which I'm looking forward to zipping through so I can join the discussion.

Just joined, thought this might be a good place to find ideas for future reading material, and people to discuss my favourite books with..
My favourite fantasy books are, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Codex Alera, The Kingkiller Chronicles, The Painted Man, and the first of Feist's Riftwar books..
At the moment i'm reading A Game Of Thrones, hoping it's as good as everyone says :)

I just started reading fantasy about 5 years ago (I consider myself fashionably late), and I just can't stop. Now I'm trying my hand at writing (only time I'll mention it, ever).
My favorite authors are:
Patrick Rothfuss
Brandon Sanderson
R. A. Salvatore
My favorite books by other authors are:
The Conqueror's Shadow by Ari Marmell
The Acacia series by David Anthony Durham
The Wheel of Time (so far, I'm on book 5)
The Old Man's War series by John Scalzi (I know, I know, it's sci-fi)
The Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series by Karen Miller
There are obviously too many others to mention, and I'm painfully new to the genre, so any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Jennifer Fallon, Robin Hobb, Orson Scott Card, John Scalzi and Diana Gabaldon have all written spec-fic books I absolutely love.
I got a Kindle for my last birthday, and it's seriously enabling my book addiction. This looks like a great group for book recommendations...

I know what you mean about getting bogged down with secondary characters, but to me is a love hate relationship. While the most of the time it makes the story feel fluffed up, in the end I feel that it gives the story and thus the authors world more definition, depth, and reality.

Welcome Ugo,,, glad to have you here!
and it's the first time I see someone say Jennifer Fallon, (I love her, though my first love is Robin Hobb).
And congrats on your kindle =)

I'm Jesse, I'm from a Dallas, Tx suburb called Wylie but currently living in Starkville, Ms for school. I was a terrible reader all the way up through intermediate school till I got my hands on the C.S. Lewis' work since then I've been into Fantasy. Since then I have branched out into Science Fiction, and I also appreciate a good classic every once in a while. I'm a big fan of high fantasy but have come to like dark fantasy lately.
Some of my favorite authors are
C.S. Friedman (Cold Fire),
Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth),
Stephen King (Dark Tower),
George R.R. Martin (Song of Ice and Fire, if he ever finishes it),
Terry Brooks (All of Shannara),
and Robert Jordan.
I'm currently reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. I'm on the second book but it seems promising.

My name's Matt. I'm from New Carlisle, OH, just outside the Springfield area. I've recently completed college with a degree in Mathematics, only to be stumped by the local job market. Reading and writing have been a huge part of my life since first grade, when I first aspired to have a work published. Ever since, I can't say that my main focus is fantasy/sci-fi, as I do love classics, thrillers, mysteries, etc., but a lot of my other activities include fantasy-related things (video games, etc.). I look forward to learning more the genre has to offer, and to give my two-cents when applicable.

Jim Butcher (two words "Codex Alera")
Rick Riordan
J.R.R. Tolkien
J.K. Rowling
Eoin Colfer
Ilona Andrews
Neil Gaimen
Simon R. Green
T. A. Pratt
Robert Jordan
Molly Harper and
Cinda Williams Chima
off the top of my head.
I'm always looking for new series/authors to start and I'm excited add to my library.

My name is Asia. I’m 24, from Poland.
I came across this group some time ago, read two books of the group’s choice (Poison Study and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms) and loved both of them. So, as the next logical step is to became a part of the group that chooses such great reads, I decided to join:)
As to what fantasy do I enjoy most, I love C.S. Lewis. I’ve read The Chronicles of Narnia for the n-th times. I also adore J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, Trudi Canavan and some Terry Pratchett.
I do believe that I’ll find many new favourities here =)

My name is Tina. I am from WV.
I was given my first fantasy novel at the age of 13. A friend gave me Piers Anthony's "A Spell for Chameleon". That was all it took! I consumed Anthony's novels faster than he wrote them after that. Piers Anthony's books are still on my Favorites list. I also enjoy Patricia C. Wrede, Margaret Weis, Tolkien and Maria V. Snyder to name a few.
I find new authors faster than I can read the books they've written. So my to-be-read list is very, very long indeed!
I look forward to finding new reading material and I am sure I'll enjoy the challenge of finding the time to read all the great suggestions! I love looking at other's bookshelves and have found many a great book that way! Ok, they used to be real bookshelves and now the are all virtual, but I enjoy it no less!
Good Day!
Tina
