Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Wow...a bunch more already...

Welcome John, Josh, Amelia, Sierra, and Donna.

We should be having some great discussions coming up as fast as this group is growing.....

Welcome Sierra, great to hear that your school has a Fantasy Writers Club and that your the President. It's a fantastic idea to have school writing groups for the writers of the future.

Hi Donna, series can become a addiction. Terry Brooks has a long series so expect you will be reading them for awhile. Great to have you with us.

John Beachem | 373 comments And they just keep pouring in... :-).

Welcome to Donna, Sierra, Amelia, John, Josh, Maria and Jim!

Wow. Great to know there are so many fantasy readers out there. Before GR I was starting to think we were a dying breed.

Wendy Gillissen (wendygillissen) Hi everyone,
I'm Wendy Gillissen, I live in the Netherlands and fantasy has been my favourite genre since I first read Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit at age 15. I thought the book was far, far superior to the movie by the way... though I really enjoyed the scene with King Theoden rallying the troops. Brought tears to my eyes;)

I don't read much new fantasy, these days, especially since I began writing my own;)
My debut novel, Curse of the Tahiéra was released in May this year.

Some of my favorite authors, series and books:
Tolkien of course,
the early Tanith Lee (The Flat Earth series were among the finest fiction I've ever read),
Patricia Mckillip,
Robin Hobb's Farseer series,
Jack Vance,
Pat O'Sea's The Hounds of the Morrigan,
Marion Bradley's Mists of Avalon,
Ursula leGuin's Earthsea,
Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn,

there must be more but I'm terrible with lists!
I'm the woman standing in the library in a daze wondering what it was she came for.

I hope you have fun reading The Hobbit! It has been years since I read it but I enjoyed immensely.
Wendy

Venkat (venkatasubramanian) Hi everyone,
I'm Venkat. I am a software engineer in Chennai, India. I love reading books and better if they are fantasy books. I love fantasy more than Sci-fi. My faviourite books are The Song of Ice and Fire Series, Bartimaeus Trilogy and Lord of the Rings. I hope to make a lot of friends here who share my same passion towards the fantasy books.

The Legend of Huma is my favourite Dragonlance novel and I love the Belgariad series, so I'll have to check out the Study series since there seems to be a really good chance I'll like it as well.

I'm also new to this group and am excited about all the to-read ideas I'm getting already. I am a re-reader since I have a terrible memory, so they're like new if I wait 5 years or so, but it doesn't look like I'll have as much time to continue doing so anymore :)

Some other favourite books of mine are:
Anthony's early Xanth novels,
Pratchett's Disc World series,
Feist's Riftwar Saga and
Feist and Wurts's Empire Trilogy.

I'm currently reading Warbreaker in preparation for my first ever book club discussion.

But seriously,

Welcome, Sara and Venkat!

message 820: by Ardani (new)

Ardani Subagio (AuthorDani) Well, I've joined here for quite a while but haven't really made a post yet.

Hi, everyone. My name's Ardani from Indonesia. I like to read ever since I was a little kid and when I grow up, my collection of books got thicker.

When in junior high I read R.L Stine's Goosebumps and Conan Doyle's Sherlock Homes. I especially like the Sherlock Holmes and been reading almost all of his books.

After a while I started to see a fantasy book in the bookstore and suddenly I began to like it! My favourite books right now are Harry Potter series and Bartimaeus Trilogy series. They're so cool and funny!

Right now, I'm reading Geraldine McCaughren's One thousand and one arabian nights. It's a great story for me.

And, right now I'm writing a fantasy story set in a medieval time. Still in the editing process right now, but I hope to finish it soon.

Good to meet you all!

message 821: by Barbm1020 (new)

Barbm1020 Hi Ardani, nice to see you here. Good luck with the book you are writing.

message 822: by Julia (new)

Julia Knight (juliaknight) HI, I'm Julia. I've been a member of Goodreads a while, but thought it about time I joined in a bit more. I read and write mostly Epic Fantasy, first book came out a few weeks ago. Don't worry, no shameless plugging :D Um, I'm a Brit and I write reviews for fantasy too. That's probably about it.

Hi :D

message 827: by Jason (new)

Jason Hi Everyone!! The name is Jason and fantasy is my game. Hailing from Los Angeles, I have been reading fantasy for a while now and I am pretty dedicated to the works of Raymond Feist and Robert Jordan, and I have recently added Brent Weeks to the list. I'm also a reader of myths and legends, Beowulf being my most favorite along with anything Arthurian.

I burn through books really fast, so I'm actually on the look out for a new read, something with a feel like a Raymond Feist book, any suggestions would be great.

Nice to meet you all!!

message 828: by Josh (new)

Josh | 53 comments Jason, if you enjoy Brent Weeks, check out Scott Lynch. His Gentleman Bastard series reads a lot like Weeks' but about theives rather than assassins, and while I really enjoyed The Way of Shadows, I think I like Lynch's work even better.
I still haven't read Feist, (although I do have a good number of the books in his series) but Robin Hobb is a must for any fantasy fan, I'd recommend her series starting with Assassin's Apprentice.

Michael Wilson (artsmart1) I'm michael from Northern California. A very old and dear friend began sending me fantasy books as a child, and I've been hooked ever since. I now have an eleven year old daughter who is herself a voracious reader and has become an avid fan of fantasy as well, having begun her journey with Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time. I never get tired of watching her dig through my library looking for her next great adventure. Though I enjoy a variety of reading, fantasy is, has been, and will always remain my first love!

Favorite fantasy authors include:
Terry Brooks
David Eddings
George R. R. Martin
Melanie Rawn
Elizabeth Moon
Ursula K. Le Guin
Ann McCaffrey
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Clen Cook
J. R. R. Tolkien
Mary Stewart
Jennifer Roberson
Lloyde Alexander

...ok, there are simply too many to list. Suffice to say that these people have enriched my life for decades. My biggest problem these days is choosing between a new found treasure, or one already worn from reading. There are bigger tragedies.

Currently enjoying Martin's A clash of Kings - absolutely brilliant!

Betsy (betsyhalvorsen) Hello everyone! My name is Betsy. I'm a children and teen librarian in a small town in Western New York. It's a pretty awesome job because I get to be around books all day. I love reading different genres, but fantasy is definitely my favorite (along with sci-fi). I love The Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings and The Dragonriders of Pern. I also really want to start reading The Wheel of Time series but just haven't had time. My TBR list has grown so much since I started working at the library. I rarely have less than 30 books checked out at once.

Can't wait to start reading the message boards!

Betsy

Michael Wilson (artsmart1) Welcome Betsy. That does sound like a great job. I would have loved to have owned a book store, but the big chains have long ago put even the strongest private stores under in my area. Still, Borders is a pretty great store. Usually order from amazon though do to price.

I became my own bookstore in order to sell my own books, which the big chains don't carry. I sell my books and almost everything my publisher produces at local craft fairs, lit fests, and scifi conventions. It's not a living but it gets my books out there, which is the important thing.

message 839: by Barbm1020 (new)

Barbm1020 Hi Betsy! Welcome from a Pioneer System library lady. *S* Nice to see you here. Your book count has got me beat, I only have 5 books and 3 DVD's out right now. I am sure you will enjoy the discussions here.

message 842: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Hi, my name is Caity and I just joined in today when I saw that you were reading Warbreaker. I'm a senior in college getting my BA in Film and Digital Media, but I also enjoy reading and writing immensely and have very slowly been making my way through a first draft of my own fantasy novel, which remains lacking in the area of a title. I love reading fantasy books, especially Brandon Sanderson and Sherwood Smith (one of my favorite books is her Crown Duel). I am a Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings addict, as well, and am always on the hunt for more books to read.

message 843: by Julie (new)

Julie Hi everyone,

Glad to be here and glad I not only found this website but this group. My name is Julie from Kansas City. I've been reading since I can remember, I even had to give up ready during my semesters at college so that I would read "their" books instead of the ones that I get into. Sci Fi/Fantasy. All though H.S. I read through EVERY class, including choir, and at that time I couldn't get enough of the Dragonlance chronicles, and the Books of Shannara. I friend of mine at the time gave me the first book in the Wheel of Time as well. But when I really look back I think that my first exposures to the genre were the Chronicles of Narnia. At the time, they were so different. Now, I'm all over the place, I just love a good story, my Kindle goes EVERYWHERE with me. I would have to say my favorites are GRRM, Robin Hobb, Marion Zimmer Bradley and I just recently started reading Brandon Sanderson and Diana Gabaldon. I have to say that Ms. Gabaldon's books had my husband grumbling that he never gets to "talk" with me and he couldn't wait until I was done.

I'm looking forward to the recommendations on this board, as well as the discussions and author interviews.

Stay warm!

Julie

Nick (dallas251) | 5 comments Hello all!
I just found the site this weekend via Brandon Sanderson's blog, and am glad I did. I have long been looking for a place to be able to discuss fantasy novels, and discover new ones. I am pretty much the only person I know personally that enjoys this kind of thing. Anyway, I started reading fantasy with Tolkien in Jr. High English (just like a lot of others i'm sure). I went from there to Terry Brooks, and have been hooked ever since. Below are some of my favorites:

Brandon Sanderson
Jim Butcher
GRRM
Roger Zelazny

I'll just stop there, because I could go on forever.

Cheers,
Nick

Kristen (krisnd08) | 13 comments Hi everyone! My name is Kristen and I’m so glad I found this group. I’m a 20-something working & living in the Minneapolis area, but hoping to leave the cold soon :) I’ve been an avid reader all my life but only recently got into fantasy after discovering the Lord of the Rings (first via the films, then the books). Some of my favorite fantasy authors are Sharon Shinn, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Juliet Marillier (I’m reading Marillier’s Foxmask right now), though I’ve got about 200 books on my shelves I have yet to read. I’m excited to start reading fantasy along with the group!

Welcome to the group Caity, Julie, Nick and Kristen.

May your 'to read list' runneth over with all the recommendations and monthly readings you will discover in this group. Make sure you join in the monthly readings as we try and get the authors to discuss their books with us, so that is always a worthwhile experience.

message 847: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamiecostello) | 13 comments Hi,

My name is Jamie. I really started reading fantasy (not counting reading Harry Potter to my kids) when I picked up "Wizard's First Rule" because it looked fat enough to last an entire airplane ride. I've read a lot of adolescent fantasy because of my kids but I've only made it through the Sword of Truth Series..The WOT series and Brandon Sanderson's books. I'm looking forward to being a part of the book discussions and finding new books to read.

Ha, noted. I spent some time updating my "shelves" this weekend with everything from my old spreadsheet based read/to-read lists. I've got to say, this is much more convenient. If you have any suggestions based on my shelves I would love to hear them.

Betelgeuze | 30 comments Hi everyone, i'm Betelgeuze. I'm an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction. The first fantasy series i've read was the Belgariad by David Eddings. The past two years i've mainly been reading urban fantasy, but i've decided to read more epic fantasy this year. My absolute favourite fantasy series is the Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop. I'm hoping to find new fantasy here and have interesting discussions about the books i've already read.
