I don't remember too much about the book, but one thing that has stuck with me is that one of the side characters (she may have been a bit of a bully at one point) had a photograph with her of her family, that had writing across it saying "My Family" or "Our Holiday" something like that. And When the Main character escapes she finds that this photograph is actually an advertisement that the other girl found while looking through the trash.

I have this feeling they were looking through trash a lot, perhaps in a basement area, sorting things.

Other than that the book's cover is either dark blue or purple.
I saw it at the Book Fair during Literacy and Numeracy Week fair at the Australian National University in 2008, so it would have been quite new at that point, shelved with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and the Alex Rider comic book.
