Stephen (havan) | 330 comments I'd like to suggest that someone consider changing the restriction on editing popular quotes for regular librarians.

I'm particularly interested in the ability to add and (very ocassionally remove) keywords from popular quotes.

message 2: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments The only things supers are supposed to be able to do over and above is:

* Edit a quote with over 500 adds
* Merge two quotes with over 5 adds that isn't levenstein similar

Are the quotes you wanting to edit have more than 500 adds?

and while this is the librarian group - this request is more appropriate to the feedback group or an email to GR at the support address

Stephen wrote: "I'd like to suggest that someone consider changing the restriction on editing popular quotes for regular librarians."

It was added due to a few incidents. Being able to edit a quote is all-or-nothing. There is not (as I understand it) a way to allow librarians to just edit keywords without also allowing them to edit author and the quote itself.

message 4: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (havan) | 330 comments Paula wrote: "...Are the quotes you wanting to edit have more than 500 adds?"

Yes. the quotes do have more than 500 "likes" In many ways, these are the quotes that would most benefit from added keywords.

Sorry for putting this in the wrong section. I thought of using the feedback group but this section of topics just seemed so germain to this. And it really is the kind of things only librarians would care to discuss anyway.

message 5: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Changing of policy like this is up to GR PTB not librarians. The decision to make the change in the first place was GR PTB.

message 6: by Jan (new)

Jan (janoda) | 140 comments I do think that the idea to add keywords to quotes regardless of the status of the user might be helpful though.

Except it is not compatible with how GR sets permissions.

message 8: by Stephen (last edited Jan 11, 2012 06:56PM) (new)

Stephen (havan) | 330 comments rivka wrote: "Except it is not compatible with how GR sets permissions."

True. But perhaps it's something that could be changed. Anyway, it's just a suggestion.

Just for an example... take a look at
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...
As keyword tags this quote has
dd , fink , flotsam , funny , humor , jeremy , jetsam , keys , lizzy , mass , right , true , wendy , what-i-always-think

Most of these are next to useless as keyword tags, and yet with 672 people liking this quote, I'm unable to delete useless keyword tags such as DD It's not very meaningful and the only other quote that shares that tag is
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

which I might think profound but it isn't in English.

message 9: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
You can always post asking for help editing such quotes. I deleted the ones that looked obviously useless to me.

message 10: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (havan) | 330 comments perhaps you should delete wendy and mass as well. Mass as a religous service might be meaningful, or wendy-mass as an author name might be but neither is really usefull as the quote can be found in a search without either (its the authors name)

message 11: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I'll make it a single tag.

message 12: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (havan) | 330 comments Thanks.

One other question how should quotes like this one be handled?

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

It's apparently in two langauges and has about 40 keyword tags not in english

message 13: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Gotta love those self-promoting authors.

Doesn't look to me like that quote or its tags violate any policies.

Isn't this supposed to be an English based site? Should foreign language keywords be used?

What about quotes like this one?
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...
I assume that it should be deleted, but I'll leave it for you.

message 15: by Jan (last edited Jan 12, 2012 06:13AM) (new)

Jan (janoda) | 140 comments It's a multilingual site, so I'm all for foreign keywords, especially if the quote is not in english.

message 16: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments I think foreign keywords are fine, we allow the entry of quotes in other languages the keywords support that.

The other link is spam and deleted

English-based most assuredly does NOT mean that foreign books, quotes, or keywords are problematic.

message 18: by Empress (new)

Empress (the_empress) I'm no longer able to do quote edits. Has this option been restricted recently?

message 19: by Gerd (new)

Gerd | 1050 comments I don't think so, maybe it's a system glitch.
I did have the problem with Firefox a few times that the edit button didn't appear.

message 20: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments You won't get the edit button on a Quote of the Day. Which quote are you having problems with?

message 21: by Empress (new)

Empress (the_empress) Hm. It's the Ray Bradbury quotes. All of them. Maybe it depends on the popularity?
This quote is from the author, but not from a book. Maybe additional tag, to clarify that:

message 22: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments 'All of them' sounds like a bug. I've debooked the one you linked but if you are are blocked from all of his quotes then I would post a bug report. Can you edit the brand new ones?

message 23: by Empress (last edited Sep 22, 2013 08:56AM) (new)

Empress (the_empress) It is weird. None of the quotes I accessed yesterday I could edit. They were the most popular for the "Fahrenheit 451" book

Today I find I can edit some of the author's quotes. I haven't found the same problem with other authors.

I also can't see the number of people that liked the quote on the quote's page, not sure if it was there before.

[Screenshot]

p.s. Thank you for debooking the quote.

message 24: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments If anyone is looking at this issue, this brand new quote was added on Sept 25 and has no edit button.

???

I see:

Arthur Conan Doyle > Quotes > Quotable Quote(edit)

message 26: by Renske (new)

Renske | 12220 comments I also don't see the edit button for that quote

message 27: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I don't see an edit button either.

message 28: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Just rechecked that quote and I still don't see the edit button in Firefox, Chrome or Android app.

message 29: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Is it a new feature? Only staff can edit quotes?

message 30: by Renske (new)

Renske | 12220 comments I think it is just an error, I looked at some other quotes of the same author and those still have the edit button.

message 31: by Susie (new)

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments I just had a look at all of his quotes and it might be an issue with quotes with over 500 likes? I can see no edit button on any of his quotes with over 500 likes.

message 32: by Renske (new)

Renske | 12220 comments Quotes with over 500 likes can only be edited by super-librarians. I see edit buttons for all his quotes with over 500 likes, except for the most popular quote https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1196...

message 33: by Banjomike (last edited Sep 25, 2013 05:35AM) (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I think that one is a Quote of the Day. No one gets the edit button on those except for staff.

Lobstergirl wrote: "Is it a new feature? Only staff can edit quotes?"

If it were deliberate, I would expect it would be true of all quotes.

This is very weird. I'll see what I can find out.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 96 comments FYI, I just looked and also cannot see an edit button

Click on the link "X people like the quote", there will be "edit" button on the top of the page. Does not work with Quote of the Day.

I edit and add quotes regularly, but there is no edit link on the Arthur Conan Doyle one for me.

message 38: by Empress (new)

Empress (the_empress) Quotes with more then 500 likes cannot be edited by Librarians, only Supers and this quote has more then 4k likes.

It has 1 like. We created a ticket, but so far the main thing determined is that it's very strange.

It now has some friends. Three more quotes ALL added by the same member, two within minutes of each other two weeks ago, the other added today.

Thank you. That may be helpful.

Have you seen any uneditable-with-few-adds added by any other users?

message 42: by Banjomike (last edited Oct 02, 2013 10:01AM) (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments This member
https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2...

has added a whole slew of "no edit" quotes over the last month or so
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8709...
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8714...
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8714...

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8747...
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8770...
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/9059...

while this one, from the same member, is OK
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8716...

I noticed that the numbering of the quotes is a bit odd. The oldest quote in numerical order (the first in the list above) is actually nearly six week NEWER than the second in the list. Has someone been playing with the numbering?

EDIT: the same member added one more "no edit" quote just 7 minutes ago. Fresh!

message 43: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I don't know if this makes complete sense but there are more of these 'no edit' quotes' today and some of them have one thing in common. They look truncated or corrupted (or just illiterate).

“Pemberley,”
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/9078...

“And brought Miss Hunter down from London in order to get rid of”
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/9078...

“That was it, sir.”
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/9078...

some the previous ones were also like that
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8748...

Do you want any more?

Thanks, I think have enough enough samples for now.

message 45: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I found this set of samples and just HAD to post the link:

There are many that look like "Everybody Wants You Dead (Mulhern, Ben) - Your Note on Page 2 | Location 35 | Added on Saturday, September".

Is this an import/share from Kindle?

Maybe it is an Amazon EE working on the software function for the upcoming Goodreads/kindle integration? As the feature isn't live yet.

Member from Seattle that recently joined.

message 48: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments This might be related. On this quote I can see the edit button but then I get "Sorry, only employees can edit this quote." It certainly isn't a QotD though it could be an test account.
