I've only just got here and was enjoying talking with folk - I don't understand enough of the whole system to know what the implications are - for example I don't know what the Amazon Author Program is - but I just hope that Goodreads as a review / discussion site can continue , and a prompter to encourage me to read books out of my normal fare.

I canceled my Goodreads account given their purchase by Amazon. This is NOT a good move for readers. Join me at Riffle to share what you're reading. Enjoy this fabulous weather here in the The Pacific Northwest.

Get to know friends through their books, and new books through your friends.

I'm with Jean. I want to wait and see what comes.
I am concerned and have my concerns, but I want to believe that the site will get better.
So if the site gets better and Amazon don't own my reviews, then I will only have to live with the fact that GR is not an independent site anymore and that it is owned by that juggernaut. (which really sits in my craw).
I should be able to live with that. i won't be happy about it, but I should be able to live with it.

It looks like a professionally run site. I don't like that you don't 'join now' you 'ask for your invite'. weird choice of words there. Bit offputting.

For the record though folks. A&M will always be here. i will always be here. Don't worry that things will change in here and that I will leave.
I am too invested in you lot. I adore talking to you all and after the merger I will keep you all abreast of any GR changes and we will get through the merger together.
You may see me whine from time to time about this horrid merger, but A&M won't be going anywhere.
We are a permanent fixture here. Here to stay and you can always rely on that.

That while I don't like this merger one bit and if I lose ownership of my reviews to Amazon I will likely remove them and only leave star ratings here, despite that, this group is here to stay and I am here to stay.
We can whine and whinge our way through the merger together. It is healthy to vent sometimes. :)

I've created an account at the Reading Room to see how it goes. I've deleted everything here but my account for now. That's because I want to keep interacting with all of you.

I would actually be heart broken if you went. :(
I am going to create an account at The Reading Room today. See what that site is all about in case I want somewhere else to put my book reviews.

And it really is invite only, you have to apply with a short application. I'm gonna check it out and see if I get an invite.
But don't worry Terri, I'm not leaving here or anything. I love this place way too much to ever leave. :)

Don't get me wrong. I use a Kindle and I buy some books from Amazon, but I don't want my reading life monopolized ... well, let me repeat a quote..
"Bryn wrote: "Yes, my concern is simply independence. In one word."

As for reviews: I'm just going to keep posting them to my website, which is just a blog any-road.
Now, minor caveat, I'm moving over the next 3 days, so my lesser inactivity is due to this, and not any coporo-political shenanigans going on. :)

I refuse to participate in any discussions that are linked to Facebook on general principal, as it's a privacy destroyer.
I have been unable to fully delete some information about myself that inadvertently got included in my profile on Facebook. This has opened me up to some unwelcome annoyances.

Waiting to be "invited" is not really as off putting as it may seem on it's face. I belong to Ravelry, a large fiber craft web community much like Good Reads WAS, in that it's not affiliated with or owned by any corporation or commercial interests. To join, you "apply" and within days, receive an invitation to participate. They do it that way just to keep the [free] enrollment in membership manageable. They don't sell member lists or use pop up ads.

Good. I don't mind people cheating on us. As long as you always come home to feed. :D

I shall.
Haven't joined yet. It has taken me ages to wade through the over 200 new posts in the Amazon Merger thread in Goodreads Feedback.
Now I need a cup of coffee and a hot cross bun to recover my mental energy. ;D

hahaha! Lucky you told us!!

tsk tsk. You got to read instructions, man. lol

You concerns about the merger...you are not alone.
I think the merger takes place end of the first quarter.
Someone posted in the Feedback group that they don't know if that means fiscal or calender. (I am hoping a Goodreads staffer will answer that question soon).
We'll soon see how things go...
RE: Riffle
It is an interesting concept. The 'invite only' concept.

I just heard back from Patrick at GR: " press release states, "Subject to various closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2013." That's calendar year that it's referring to. And we really don't have any more information than that. "

It was a relief.
Good though that they got back into good mobile reception long enough for me to give my Mum a dressing down for forgetting to organise my chocolate Easter eggs before they went on their drive holiday. :\
I feel so neglected. I have not had one Easter in my whole life where my Mum didn't get me something. *sniff*
And since a lady never reveals her age...I can tell you I was born in the 70's. That is a lot of Easter's that she never forgot!

She promised me chocolate in some form or other when they come home (their place is not too far from mine) in a few weeks. I may even be sitting on the front steps waiting on that day, to see if she followed through on her promise.
We take chocolate very seriously in my family.
:)

I could wait at 'the crossroads'. They have to drive passed our road to get home. So I could catch her there.
They have already been away for a week when I went over to their place to collect the mail. I let myself in, expecting Easter Eggs to be waiting on the kitchen table. But there was NOTHING!
I even asked my hubby "did she give you money to buy some for me? If she did, you had better tell me now."
He assured me there had been no communication and was hiding no secret deal.

I think hubby came through though. I saw him hiding a grocery bag in the wardrobe when he got home yesterday. :D

Regarding the merger.
While I understand the concern, I hope we'll wait to abandon the ship to see if it really sinks..I hope to see you all around in the next future.
And since my (very few) reviews have always been done without commercial interests, I'll still continue to leave them when I'll feel like to. Maybe that will be the grain of sand that will keep the balance.

I am lucky, Simona. I agree.
My Mum and Dad may have forgotten to get my easter Eggs, but hubby didn't. it is 6.30am and I am putting the jug on to make coffee. Whilst I drink my coffee I shall eat my first easter chocolate of the day. :) nom nom nom.....
Happy Easter to those in my part of the globe (where it is Sunday). I don't celebrate it from a religious aspect, I only celebrate it as a day to celebrate traditions, family and chocolate and to know others around the world are celebrating to. It is a global bonding moment for me. :)

Chocolate and coffee. Made to go together."
Think it's the caffeine in each that appeals??? :)

Sometimes chocolate seems like a "religious experience"...

Damn. My attempt at making you envious was thwarted by mini Milky ways!
