Think of all the reading time you’ll have for all these new books coming out :-D

Watching the wedding is not the reality show, its the constant media attention the US media has given to every little element of the wedding and even Meghan's life as if it all is the reality tv show. As if this wasthe Kardashians.
It is mindblowing. All the horrible stuff they have aired about her family. Giving that family screen time to tear Meghan down.
You just don't get that kind of media treatment of Royals and soon to be Royals, in the Commonwealth. After Diana's death they aren't that ruthless anymore, but in the US it is open slather. It has shocked me and while I see the headlines, I try to ignore it.

Andy | 1511 comments It would appear the Colonials are far more interested in the event than most Brits. Most who follow soccer will be preparing (In the rub-a-dub-dub) for the FA Cup final whilst those of us rugger fans will be following the Aviva & PRO14 semi-finals!

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments THIS colonial has/had absolutely zero interest it the wedding what so ever:)

My sister on-the-other-hand actually got up and watched it. She was living in London when Diana and Charles got married and has had in interest in all things Royal ever since.

Terri | 19576 comments The reason I won't miss a Royal wedding is because, well, for the same reason I read historical fiction, because I am interested in history. Mostly European.

You can watch a documentary on Royal ceremonies in whatever historical period. Whether it is Alfred the Great or Henry the Eighth, or you can read about it in NOn Fiction or Fiction. But actually watching one happen in real time, is akin to witnessing living history.

For me it isn't about famous people, or the current royal family, or like some reality tv show, it is seeing first hand a ceremony that wouldn't have looked too much different from other royal weddings over the last fifteen hundred years or more in Britain. Since the Anglo Saxons for weddings like these.

Take away the cars and the electricity and swap out the clothes, you are looking at an ancient ceremony.

Swap the location and it could be Alfred the Great marrying Ealhswith of Mercia.

Being able to watch such a ceremony with our 21st century Royals is a pretty cool thing for a history lover like me. :)

message 15407: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I saw bits and pieces of the ceremony. So good to get some news that isn't depressing.

Terri | 19576 comments I couldn't agree more, Jane. It has been a bad few days for America again. :( A happy spectacle like a Royal Wedding can only be cathartic in the face of what is going on in your country.

:) Yes, ive avoided the news completely the last few days, its reached saturation levels, hopefully it'll start to dissipate from Monday.....

And good luck with the retirement, always nice to get a welcome bonus.

Why miss a good history lesson that dated back to at least Henry III?

Terri | 19576 comments Is anybody else out there watching the new crimes drama, C.B Strike?
The JK Rowling crime series?

It's very cool. We're loving it in my house.

Here's the trailer. It says screening June 1 on that trailer, so I am guessing that's when the US gets it.

Terri | 19576 comments What a fab character CB Strike is. He's very unique. A refreshing change isn't it, to have such deep and multilayered character? Ex military police. Lost a limb in Afghanistan. Son of a famous rock star. A fun character.

message 15415: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I will look into the Rowling series on YouTube. Love that YouTube!!! We get BBC and PBS now, and I like the British series and shows, especially KEEPING UP APPEARANCES and DOWNTON ABBEY. KUA is an old comedy series, but Onslow and Daisy will be funny forever. American shows are generally about the lovelorn trying to lie their way out of improper conduct, sex, violence and dirty words. Why do audiences applaud upon hearing or seeing obscenity?

message 15416: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments CB Strike should show up on BBC, Linda. I think that's the channel we get it on. BBC Two, I think,

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Thank you, Terri. My BBC is channel 131. DOWNTON ABBEY , PBS, will be preempted by Memorial Day concert tonight, the very night Matthew will get a tickle up his leg and Bates probably gets arrested for the murder of his mean old wife!

Terri | 19576 comments I've watched a couple great movies over the weekend.

Has anybody seen that newish movie with Jeremy Renner, Wind River?

Holy cow. I mean, look, I'm not a weeper, but that movie had me burying my face in my hands and weeping by the end. It had me teary a few times, but in the end, phew. I fell apart.

How incredibly heartbreaking that there is no data on how many Native American women go missing. They have no idea how many it would be. Awfully sad. Especially after watching that movie that had scenes that were difficult for a woman to watch.

When I looked up the director, I saw he did Sicario. Which I also thought was great. Which led me to find that another one with Chris Pine that he directed, Hell or High Water. We watched that one last night and it was also good. Not as good as the two former I mention, but still beautifully filmed and gritty.

We also watched. Logan Lucky. Very well done. Very dry and funny. Adam Driver and Riley Keough were great.

I did netfix it a couple of years back, and I did need the Kleenex!

Generally, I don't like animation either, but this was a rare exception.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Oh, I'm finally back. Got back from London 2 weeks ago with an unpleasant souvenir. Food poisoning in the form of campylobactor. The last two weeks have been deeply nasty. I have lost 10kgs in weight and look haggard. The damn thing has left me gluten intolerant. Am hoping it's only temporary.

I hate being sick. I can never concentrate to read anything new. Just re-read old favourite.

message 15438: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Slow steps, Allie. At least I'm eating real food again. For two weeks I was living on mashed potatoes, applesauce, and port wine jelly.
