My hubby's parents have both passed on, but they lived in India, anyway. I get along fine with my husband's relatives that have come to this country--siblings and families.

I normally do/did. About the only problem I ever had with the MIL, she's gone now - God rest her soul, was her constant nagging about my weight ( I got quite rotund:) ) - then when I lost the weight she said I was too skinny - sometimes you just can't win :)

My FIL is still with us, but is getting quite feeble and sometimes his memory isn't what is used to be. We are kind of the ones in charge (we live the closest)

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Which Roman Emperor are you? I'm Marcus Aurelius, The Last of The Five Good Emperors http://www.historyoftheancientworld.c...

message 12204: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1511 comments Constantine! :D Not sure about the religious conversion to following the White christ but not so bad, at least dinny pull Nero out!

You are the ambitious Constantine! Famous for being the first Christian emperor in Roman history and infiltrating the religion into the Empire, he changed the course of history forever. He was raised a military man and he claimed to have had a vision from God in battle, and that had a domino effect on the rest of Western history. He died of natural causes, and left behind a mighty legacy. You may be a very ambitious person driven by principle. Never put aside your beliefs and stand up for what you believe in. You may have the power to change the world.

Dawn (caveatlector) Pick a wallpaper??

Anyway, I came up with:

You are like the elegant Hadrian! Hadrian was known to have been one of the most cultured and literate emperors, and he was very artistic and had a love for poetry and literature. During his reign, Hadrian constructed some of the most famous buildings and structures still present today, such as the Pantheon, his magnificent villa, and Hadrian's wall. He died of natural causes and wrote a poem shortly before his death. Like Hadrian, you may be a very artistic and intellectual individual with a sensitive personality. Nourish your artistic pursuits and you shall flourish!

Same as Dawn, Hadrian.

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Second time and still come up with Marcus Aurelius. (I'm Joaquin Phoenix's Dad)

You are like the illustrious Marcus Aurelius! A reign marked by constant warfare, he was always fighting to preserve the expansion and glory of Rome. The last of the Five Good Emperors, he was a intellectual and philosopher and wrote his famed "Meditations" while on campaign, and is a literary classic. He was a rational individual with good leadership skills and a good character. Like Marcus Aurelius, you may be an intellectual individual who is always thinking about the ways of the world or the workings of the universe. You are a noble character and people respect you. Consider writing a book.

He wasn't baptized until his deathbed. All his life he worshipped "Sol Invictus" [Unconquered Sun--a Mithrian concept???]. With his vision in the sky and his having soldiers put the Chi Rho symbol on their shields before Milvian Bridge, I don't feel it was a religious move, more of a canny morale-booster. He courted Christians and promulgated Edict of Milan to give religious toleration to Christians; the cynic that I am thinks it was to build up his supporters, not out of religiosity.

message 12219: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments When I arrived at the bus shelter this morning, I was greeted by one of those handy-man type adverts where the bottom are tear-away phone numbers that interested parties can tear off an call later.

The difference between this one and the usual lot is that begins with

'Free Sperm Donor Brings the joy of children to aspiring parents!'

There's a lovely artsy stork with baby and a paragraph that highlights 'reliable, healthy, and professional'.

Anyway, I thought that was random enough to post here. :)

The question is...were there any numbers torn away?

message 12223: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments When I got off the bus coming home I did notice 3 were torn off.

Now, whether any of those were the local authorities is tough to tell. Technically can't advertise that as a service in Canada.

Local authorities would probably have ripped the entire sign down.

Terri | 19576 comments Sorry guys, I just have so much going on in my life right now. It just doesn't seem to stop.
Apologies for only being here in dribs and drabs over the last few months. I hope it will all change, but with all the stuff going on in my personal life and in my life (ie hobbies) I haven't had the mental energy to read or log into GR and catch up with all the conversations.
And I admit. getting harassed by that self pub/indie author the other month has changed things for me a little. With drama in my personal life, I just don't need to log on to GR and have anything else like that happen to me. Not right now.
Feeling very drained.

It will all pass and I will get back to normal eventually. I only ask that my mates here on GR and the members of A&M not give up on A&M because you think I don't care anymore.
Still care. So please be patient with me. :)

Terri | 19576 comments Thanks mate!

Thing is, when you guys have a lot going on you can vanish for months or drop in only once a month. When you are the very active mod of a usually very active book group people notice. :) And people tend to think "well if she can't be bothered posting in the group, why should I?"

Please nobody think that. I want to post. It is just that my brain is too full right now.

Terri | 19576 comments Speaking of not wanting to take on another load of crap (like that crazy indie author the other month) in a time when I have enough on my plate.
Some bloody nongbat just sent me a pm to get up me because he had left A&M several times and yet had still got the pm about the polls.
How the hell is that my fault. If he is getting group broadcasts and isn't a member then he should take it up with GR.
He also accused me/someone of "adding him back to the group without his permission" and told me to stop.

Some people are just whack.

You are absolutely correct on this train of reasoning, however when I disappear for a month there's hardly a ripple.....when you are gone it's a tsunami!! I am probably guilty as hell for not thanking you more often for the time and effort you expel for us ruffians!! Truly, thank you for your involvement and babysitting.

I know exactly where you are coming from Terri. I have been working 6-7 days per week and looking after my mum who has Alzheimer's and who is now in a nursing home but I am the only sibling in our city so I have to look after all the red tape involved in her care and her finances and visit her at least 3 times per week. Normally, I would love this duty of care but I am pulling my hair out. I am 66yrs old and starting to feel my age.

The point, in this unbecoming diatribe, is to say I have to make time to read. It is my sanctuary and gives me glimpses into how other people live particularly lives of the past. I read as I drink my coffee after I wake in the morning; I read while having my breakfast; I read while eating my lunch; I read while waiting to be called for an appointment like doctor or dentist.

No, of course it is not enough. But I have to get out of my head some way, and reading transports me. It is my aid to staying sane. We are really lucky to be living in this day and age regardless of all the bad news on media.
