Dawn (caveatlector) Does anybody use a audio book app other than Overdrive or OneClickDigital?? I'm using android if that makes a difference.

I'm trying to find one that I like where I can increase the speed. I'm currently trying out Smart Audiobook Player but after 30 days I lose all the 'full' features unless I pay.
I'd rather find something free but haven't been able to. Ideas?? Or am I best just to fork out the pittance to buy this one.

message 12153: by Meri (new)

Meri (aussie_bookworm) | 66 comments I use Audible and you can increase speed easily. Plus it has the bonus of remembering your place and if you have the same book for kindle they do sync together. That's how I read Anya Seton's book, Katherine.

There is a discount on audible titles if you own the kindle version and it can be cheaper to buy both than to just buy the audible version. Of course if you subscribe you get free titles each month.

The actual controls of the app are easy to use and the speed can be increased in increments of .5, so 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, etc.

Dawn (caveatlector) I haven't given in to a Audible subscription yet, it is so tempting. Maybe I should suggest it for a birthday present...

That's nice that she would do a program like that. Dolly can do no wrong in my eyes. :)

The Martian by Andy Weir to the wee wife and didn't see or hear from her for 3 days!! It's now being filmed for release in November starring Matt Damon!

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Mama's Got A Book! When Mama has a Book, you can judge her absence by the book's thickness. Reading habits are telling. Some readers have a certain place they go to read and a set length of time to devote to reading every day. Others read all the time that is not obligated to some other diversion such as housework, cooking, yard work, etc. Others read all the time. Sounds like if Wee Wife gets a good book, she is a type 3 reader! I say more poher to her! Makes men appreciate their wives after the book is read!

Allison | 1704 comments Went to the first book sale at my new library yesterday! All I bought was Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling and The Conquerors Roosevelt, Truman & the Destruction of Hitler's Germany 1941-45 by Michael R. Beschloss and a gazillion books for my 2 year old nephew (who LOVES books!!!) otherwise, it was kind of sucky :( It continues on though all week so maybe I'll go again when they've had time to restock.

Candace (cprimackqcom) | 55 comments Linda, what type are you? It seems they could overlap as I am a type one and three. I have a set time when I wake up and then any other free time that I can read without falling asleep! (No reply option on my phone, sorry)but I'm interested as you get a lot if reading done!!

Well put, Linda. She works a lot so the little time she does have is usually split between me and our 3 daughters but we get out of the way when she gets hooked on a book like this. Believe it ir not I am Mr. Mom incarnate. I do 90% of the cooking (other 10% we eat out), help with homework, drive everyone to and from school etc. And i am also completely appreciative of all she accomplishes and of her bread-winner roll.

Wow Bobby, Mrs Bobby is a lucky lady!

message 12164: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I believe Mr. and Mrs. Bobby are well suited for one another.
My type? All of them at different times in my life. When 'Mama's got a book', I read without feeling guilty. I always read at night and in the morning. We are semi-retired, so we have some leisure time. The types do lap over, don't they! That is a good point!

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I am one relieved person this afternoon. A cyclone has been lashing the part of Australia where my family live with severe flooding and at least 200,000 with out power.

All but one famiy member accounted for. The unaccounted for one is in a nursing home and there's been nothing on the news about nursing homes being damaged/evacuated so we're pretty sure she's safe. Phone lines in the area are out so we're pretty sure that accounts for her not being contactable.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My elderly aunty is safe. The home has no power and food is being brought in for them. Those with medical conditions that need electrical equipment, such as nebulizers, are being evacuated to hospitals in the area.

Lisa | 728 comments I can vouch for the nasty weather! It has made commuting to the new job a little interesting on the train. It hasn't let up now for about 48 hours. At least it's cooler, so that's something, :). We have lots of family and friends all the way up the coast Margaret, and all of Chris's family are on the mid north coast. It's not looking good there tonight.

Lisa | 728 comments Thankfully all our family are safe and sound. Thanks for your thoughts guys! Just one niece without power. Chris's brother works in Dungog usually, where a house was floating down the street and 3 people lost their lives. Thankfully not this week. I can assure you there weren't too many people coming in to but motorcycles parts that's for sure!!!

Lisa | 728 comments Great morning at Sydney dawn service today for ANZAC day. Huge turn out for the milestone anniversary. I can never hear the last post without crying. In the dark, so early in the morning, it is so poignant. A day to be proud of.

For the record Margaret, as I'm sure you will like to hear this: traditionally the catafalque party, that guards the cenotaph is made up of 4 Aussie defence force personnel. In a nod to this historic anniversary, the party was made up of two Australian army and two New Zealand army personnel. A fine Australian army girl sang the first two verses of the New Zealand national Anthem before belting out the Australian anthem. And finally, in my second round of tears, a traditional Maori choir sang the Song of Sorrow. It was a beautiful morning in Sydney. Perfect weather for the parade. I dedicated my minutes silence to a young man, recently returned from Afghanistan, with PTSD, who took his life just a few weeks ago. It is a stark reminder that the job is never over. In the words of the ode "Lest we forget". :)

Lisa | 728 comments That's nice Andy we've been to a lot of country ones, and they are very intimate. Today was 30,000. Not quite so intimate, but heart wrenching none the less. Good to see/hear you again too. Been ages. I'm off to bed. My 3.00am start for the dawn service has done me in. Haha. Night :)

Does everybody who has them, generally get along with their inlaws?

message 12199: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I love my father in law. My mother in law drives me bat shit crazy (excuse my language) and tends to take every opportunity to question my parenting skills.

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Similar week here, Terri but instead of In-Laws I had my best friend in high school and his wife who, I also hung around with, visit from Niagara Falls, Canada. He dodged the draft and ran there while I was in Vietnam but that's another story. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago and it was very taxing to see her now and chase her around constantly while she was here. My buddy deals with it 24/7 and its taking a toll on him. H spent a day golfing with my oldest son and I took her to the Phoenix Zoo......THAT was quite a day. Didn't lose her but it was close a couple of times. They left yesterday and I'm getting into the wine tonight!!
