Had the same thing a couple of years ago and he really needs to keep an eye on that. I was working a game and sort of blew the pain off as being a cramp. Doc said I was lucky it didn't move on me and be a real danger! Won't even tell you the medicine I took to thin the blood but had to give myself injections in the stomach for a while. Good luck Terri.

Glad they caught it in the leg & it didnt get to the lungs, thats when they get a bit pesky :( & Klexane too until the INR gets to the right level - make sure you hold the needle at right angles & depress slowly - less bruising that way plus it dont sting so much ;) Also did they give him a compression stocking? if not get one prescribed as they're great & take a lot of the pain off the leg, although not the best of looks for fellahs! Take it easy tell him! .."

Hi mate,
Yep, Klexane as well as the Warfarin. I'll pass on your advice regarding the Klexane injections. He had a clot in the same calf muscle two years ago. His tummy bruised up real bad from the injections.
He'd never (knowingly) had one until then.
Now, two years later he got another one. Purely by coincidence, he got this second one in the exact same week two years on, also went to the Doctor about it on the exact same day as he did two years ago. Was a bit creepy!

They did the genetic test two years ago to see if he was genetically predisposed. He wasn't. But now that he's got another one, they are going to do a full blood work up. Which apparently will put him out of action for two days.

I can't remember why, but the Doctor told him not to bother with the compression stockings.

Thanks Allie. Mr Terri is coping much better than I am. Erg. I can't even go into the same room when he's injecting himself.

Thanks also to Lisa and Beth for your kind thoughts. I shall pass them on to the hubby.

message 10974: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments This is what the doc has told my hubby. That this second clot could mean Warfarin for the rest of his life. Which isn't going to be good for him, he is ALWAYS hurting himself! So careless around the farm.

message 10975: by Allison (last edited Dec 11, 2014 05:19PM) (new)

Allison | 1704 comments My grandpa was allergic to Warfarin so he had to be on Coumadin but he had all sorts of problems with that too. I sure hope they figure something out for Mr. Terri. But he's a young man and probably in pretty good shape since running a farm. My grandpa was a rather large, giant of a man, not too mention elderly with heart problems. Apparently he just had "bad blood" no one else in his family ever had those health issues and no one since either :/

Her clot was so bad and she got on it so late, it's fused to her veins. So she's on meds for the rest of her life. Not sure what kind though. She's off to Mexico tomorrow, but she's back the following week, I could ask her more about it then. I do know that the meds are blood thinners, and that she can only eat so many greens because of it.

Ah, yeah, so maybe his weight and health contributed to his issue somewhat? Mr T, he is fairly fit and healthy. I think he is going to have to do even more exercise once this clot is dealt with properly.

message 10979: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Limited greens, Darcy? I'll have to look into that. I know he can't have liquorice as it counteracts the Warfarin. This has devastated him. ;)

Terri | 19576 comments I have had an idea! It hurt and may lay me up for a few months, but it was worth it I think. ;)

No group read polls this month.

Why, you ask? Are you on drugs, you wonder?
We aren't having Group Read Polls this month, because
we aren't having a January Group Read!!!!

What we are going to have in January instead is a special month called "READ A GROUP READ BOOK YOU MISSED MONTH"

I have set up a thread for everybody to check out what the heck I am talking about.

Allison | 1704 comments Maybe. He wasn't overweight as much but he was tall/big. But up until getting prostate cancer he was a really fit 70 year old. Was on a baseball team, a football team, always playing street hockey with his grandsons, up on roofs or under cars fixing whatever needed fixing. Not a retiree who sat around that's for sure. I think the radiation really f'ed him up. He needed a walker after that because he couldn't move his legs on his own, he contracted so many clots. Had a lot of problems with them in his hands too. I got it mixed up before... he was allergic to the Coumadin so they gave him Warfarin. Sounds like they put your hubby straight on the Warfarin. You might have dodged a bullet there... reactions to Coumadin... not pretty.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Terri wrote: "Limited greens, Darcy? I'll have to look into that. I know he can't have liquorice as it counteracts the Warfarin. This has devastated him. ;)"

Yeah, because of the Vitamin E - a natural blood thinner.

message 10983: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh, so not overweight or unhealthy.
Poor bugger. My father-in-law had prostate cancer a few years back. He got through it well. Didn't suffer anything like your grandad. Went on to have a normal life.
Until he got the lung cancer...which he is now recovering from.

message 10984: by Allison (last edited Dec 11, 2014 05:48PM) (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Couple pounds but not overweight. He definitely wasn't your typical slight, frail, elderly man. Full of life and then that darn cancer. My dad had prostate cancer too --- fortunately they caught it, took the whole thing out and he's fine. For my papa, I believe everything went downhill from there. I just remember that out of all the health problems that came afterwards, those stupid clots were the biggest pains in the a'. Then every time he was in the hospital they'd give him the blood thinner he was allergic too!! Ugh!!

Anyways ~ I do hope Mr. T is back on his feet soon!

message 10986: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Did Mr. Terri get instructed to take a low dose aspirin daily? I have a factor five blood disorder which means I am a high risk for clotting. I had to be monitored closely while I was in labor with my girls. I had to wear compression socks all the time towards the end of my pregnancy with the twinkers. Has anyone ever tried to pull a pair of those bad boys over already swollen ankles?!?

I love the no group read idea! I have a few to catch up on.

message 10987: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Oh yes Gretchen. Quite often, a couple of us had to pull those things on and off my grandfather. It was tricky to say the least.

He's allergic to Aspirin unfortunately. A pity that he is. It would be handy for him to take it in future if he thinks he has a clot and needs something quick to thin his blood before getting to the Doc.

Sounds like the men in your family carry the gene like the men in my hubby's family do. Mr T and his brother, even though they are still young men, get checkups for prostrate once every couple years. Due to the genetic predisposition it is something they have to monitor.

Forgot to add :) If its in exactly the same place, might have a slight narrowing of the artery, normally you hear about these things in the heart & they bang a stent or two in if an angiogram shows up a narrowing but they also do them in other locations (not normally stents but they jus open them up or re-route if an artery has collapsed/pinched) Minor op is all which you can watch as you only get a local.

Mind Bloodwork shows & tells so many things these days its incredible how much medical technology has come on... Nods appreciatively.

That is kind of a bummer. My doctor has had me taking a low dose aspirin every day for a while now. Hopefully he makes a speedy recovery and doesn't have any more problems in the future. There's so much they can do now to monitor blood clots and try to prevent them from occurring.

Carol (ladygyn) | 304 comments Just finished the creative writing course at FutureLearn and found it was not as helpful as I hoped it would be. I really wanted more solid info on how to ser up a piece you are writing, how to use dialog or scene to advance a plot etc, and it really did not add a lot to what I knew already ( having never taken a course). But I did enjoy seeing what others wrote and comparing my work to theirs. Also getting feedback to my scribbles was good and I will continue to look for more courses like this. Next up on my menu is Portus which starts in January. Terri hope your husband is reco earring from his DVT with no sequelae.

Terri | 19576 comments Hi all,
yesterday I mentioned the challenge we're having in January. To go back through every group read we have ever had and see if you can find one, or more, to read that you had missed joining in on when the group read was running.
I have now FINALLY (exhausting work) posted the list of every book we've ever had as a group read. (excluding Dec and Nov 2014 as they are still fresh and active).

The List is in the first post on this thread.
