I had a whole big response to Margaret and Terri in which I pretty much agreed with what both of you had to say. My computer deleted it and now I have no desire to try to remember what I said.

Something about book clubs around here and there's a reason I love Goodreads, specifically this group. I think there was something about an Oprah effect too.

The only Oprah books I've ever read were by Wally Lamb. I didn't read them because Oprah told me to. I read them because I love Wally Lamb. He has a permanent spot on my top five list.

I knew that, but had forgotten about it. I had a German penfriend when I was a girl. His letters to me always started "Dear Gretchen". :D

The only AH HAH moments I get with books is when I've worked out whodunnit long before the author has expected me to.

Yes. In Germany and Austria when Gounod's opera Faust is given, they always call it "Gretchen", which is Goethe's heroine's name in his original play, "Faust".

OH MY GOD! I just had to complete an essay for Cambridge university. IT was awfull. They want me to write two essays so that they can assess whether they want me or not. It's so stressfull. I'm just glad I'm not applying for Oxford, as they have to do an entrance test. Ahhhhhh I'm so stressed!

Never had it so easy you Yoofs of today :) UCCA forms would always be mini-booklets for you to fill out & then IF you did get to UNi/polytechnic for interviews you would have multiple interviews over the day, some of the higher Uni's you could spend a few days up there being "pulled apart piece by piece"

Mind on the plus side, they did have "student grants" back in my day when us poor folk got our education paid for, then we could properly enjoy threshers week.... month.... 4 years.... :D

Others of benefit maybe Do you work & pay your way? that was always seen as a plus, along with team sport participation, ability to teambuild, be part of something.

Yep next year the "hard work" officially starts. I don't know what to do about the volunteering though, it's a bit too late to just start doing it now. As the interviews for Cambridge is in December. I've actually all ready got offers from two universities, it's just Cambridge making my life hell at the moment.

I started getting that too Kimber, yesterday.... two days after 10/28/14. My tablet is only a year old so I'm not messing with it. I wouldn't even know how to update my browser anyway. Funny thing is, I was on a work computer today that's years older and MUCH SLOWER and never once received the message!!

Its from Goodreads. You can click on a link and it takes you to their "contact us" email... well I have no idea what to say. Update my browser? I don't even know what that means. As long as I can get on Goodreads, that message can pop up as long as it wants.

You may have a problem in future then.

Updating your browser just means that you aren't using the most current version of Internet Explorer (version 11) or Firefox (version 33), or Google Chrome or Safari and they want you to download the newest version. Usually they do it automatically unless you've turned it off.

Though if you are using the current versions, you should contact GR's. They should be able to fix or walk you through a fix.

Humph. All this bullpucky going on...I hate updating!! Last time I went from 8.0 to 8.1 or 2 or whatever, I had nonstop problems!! Why do computers have to hate me?

That 8.0 to 8.1 was a Microsoft Windows update and it messed with everyone's computers!!

I don't know the difference!! lol. Yeah, it was definitely a trip. I only got it so I could install the Kindle app, luckily that works just fine :)

Just checking to see if anyone who has an ipad had downloaded IOS8.2. I haven't heard good reports so am reluctant to do it yet.

My sister has an Iphone and she's downloaded the latest IOS version for that, don't know if it's the same version for the ipad. But so far she likes it.

My browser updates automatically and I still received that message. But it only shows up once in a while. So far this morning it hasn't appeared. If it continues to appear I may contact GR but my browser is already up to date.

I did downloaded iOS8.2 for my iPad via Wi-Fi, but a strange thing happens when I connected it to the PC, iTunes on my PC did not want to cooperate with the new installed iPad software. It did not recognize the iPad at all. I did all the normal troubleshooting steps. Then, when I restarted the PC, then reconnect iPad and iTunes, I noticed that the iPad being forced to go back to iOS8.1.

I am assuming, since iOS8.2 was released to accommodate ApplePay, those devices that unable to use the ApplePay feature will be better off stay with iOS8.1

FYI, iOS8.1 has given me no troubles so far... *knocked on wood*

Sometimes the most direct route is not the best route. I spent 1.75 hours on the bus one way to get some 15 skeins of embroidery floss by taking the (supposedly) bus that would bring the closest.
What I did not know is that the route changes at the week ends, so I ended up having to walk an additional 2 kms to get there.
Had I taken the bus that wasn't meant to stop as close, my entire return trip would have taken less time than the bus I took to get to the shop.
On the upside, the shop had everything I needed, then some so I'm pleased as punch, even if a little frozen.

What sort of embroidery do you do, darcy? I am no embroiderer, but I admire the handiwork of many.

I deeply respect people who does embroidery. I tried something really small when I was expecting my first child, but when after (what I perceived as) many hours I obtained a pitiful blotch of color on white I went in a rage and I made it disappear. It's probably buried somewhere in the garden.

PS. both my mother and my granny did it beautifully...oh well. I can't be perfect now, can I?

I'm not really skilled at embroidery proper, but I do cross-stitch, and petit-point (not sure if there's an English name for that). I've done a bit of crewel work too; that didn't turn out like I'd hoped.
As for embroidery, I'm trying my hand at little projects so that I don't become too frustrated, build up some skills and then get into bigger stuff.
