Oh dang it to heck!!!! I just dumped all over that series and now I'm going to have to watch it! Now that Sherlock's over, I need my Martin Freeman fix. Son of a biscuit.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments So...started the new position today. It has elements of all the positions I've had with the company (except the auditing part that I just left), which is terrific. What I don't yet have are security access, a laptop or a desk. It's been three months since they put in a request to post the job, I'd have thought they would have anticipated the whole desk thing. The other two items are delayed because of other departments, but the desk...

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments If we're on the subject of movie wastes of time, money and space...Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jnr. 15 minutes in and I wanted to slap the smug look off of Jude Law's face, and by the time we'd got to the point of the dead guy killing his father, I gave up on it. 45 minutes of time wasted I will never get back. :p

Nope. It's not what you're thinking. I thought the plot was silly. RDJ's Holmes was okay, but Jude Law's Watson infuriated me.

I may have to watch the second one though...just to see Stephen Fry as Mycroft.

message 7126: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Mar 11, 2014 05:37PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Actually, it's apparently a dead end, Bobby. There is a thriving racket in stolen passports on sold and used to smuggle people into Europe. One of the men using one of the passports has been identified. He was trying to get to Germany to his mother and intend to seek asylum. The other man appears to be a similar story. Neither man is considered a terror suspect by any of the authorities involved.

It's come out the the co-pilot broke security protocol to let pretty girls onto the flight deck at least once. So security and attention to duty is pretty low on his priority list at least.

The plane has been confirmed as turning back towards KL. It's looking more and more like a catastrophic structural failure with every passing day.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments The man heading for Germany was identified when his mother, a legal resident in Germany, went to the police and told them she thought one of the men with the stolen passports might be her son.

message 7131: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Why would anyone have a stolen passport unless they were involved in something illegal (even entering a country illegally) or trying to hide their actions? Maybe I've read too many espionage stories!

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Bobby wrote: "Why would anyone have a stolen passport unless they were involved in something illegal (even entering a country illegally) or trying to hide their actions? Maybe I've read too many espionage stories!"

It's a quicker, more expensive version of people smuggling. Something we're very familiar with here in Australia. The refugee system is too slow, if can take years to get out of an unpleasant situation.

There is also the fact that in some countries simply the act of trying to leave the country is a criminal offense.

message 7133: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments The truly alarming aspect of the stolen passport thing is that Malaysia doesn't keep it's security database updated. All stolen passports are registered with Interpol and the data supplied to all other countries.

Jesse Super pumped today with the Goodwill book finds. Picked up 7 Hardback's for $3 a piece and most of them are 1st Editions. Caesar (Masters of Rome, #5) by Colleen McCullough Anyone had a chance to read and review this one? I've not read any of McCullough's work before but I figured at $3 I could take a gamble.

message 7135: by Portia (new)

Portia What is it about car parks!!!???

In the News
Daily Mail: Is this the bed that launched the Tudors?

A carved four-poster bed has been identified as the one created for the marriage of Henry VII, the first Tudor King, and his wife, Elizabeth of York--parents of the future King Henry VIII. The bed, which sold at auction for £2,200 after it was found dumped in a U.K. hotel parking lot, is now valued at £20 million.

This blurb is from The Folger Shakespeare Library's online info site.

Her "masters of Rome" series is generally well regarded so I think you made out there. Except I think that's book 4 or 5 so now you have to find the other ones!!

I'm guessing it's more to do with the pervasiveness of carparks than anything else. Wait until they start tearing up the Motorways ha!

I liked the first few, then when it got too much Julius Caesar [yuck] I skimmed some then quit. There's been too much on A&C so I skipped them entirely. She IS kinda dry.

Jesse Thanks for the heads up. Sadly I am one that cannot bring myself to read a book in a series before I complete the other before it so it'll have to wait on my shelf anyway until I can gather the other titles. Although Jane & Margaret might have me rethinking that investment. Reviews seem good for the series but I've learned I cannot always trust that.

Why not get one from the library if they have it, and get a taste for her style and see if you like it? Or, if you own #1, read that and see if you like her? I trust editorial reviews rather than reader reviews.

I'm the other way round. I am well aware that many editorial reviews are done by people who are paid to review the books. So I prefer to trust word of mouth recommendations.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments I went to watch the 300 sequel today, got exactly what I expected... slow motion battles, blood, cut off limbs, etc. Plus, an awkward rough sex/foreplay scene (not sure what was going on there) in a I want to screw and choke you way.

Anyone else planning on seeing this one?

Also, I noticed Pompeii is out and am contemplating making it out to the movies for a second time this week. Anyone seen it?

Yes, and with a frickin' battle horse on a trireme (I couldn't help but laugh out loud in the theatre!).

...that swims...

I saw it in 3D and I would recommend it. I liked it for what it is. If you are in the mood for battle porn... pretty (and pretty gruesome) battle scenes, dialogue like it was written by Spartans hit a few too many times in the head, lots of blood and limbs and disembowelments, and unrealistic but very artistic and cool looking battle scenes (while disregarding any sort of actual knowledge you have about Greek battles, uniforms, fighting styles, etc.). It was a bit video-game battle scenes mixes in with some comic book style exaggerations and kick ass heroes who never question the fact that violence is the answer. And it has two very awesome, strong women leads that actually pick up swords and do a bit of killing (and surprisingly wear more clothes than the hot, sweaty men with straining muscles... yup definitely porn worthy shots there).

So, if you are expecting another 300 then you'll get something just as satisfying, in that same style (but less racist). If you didn't care for 300 or didn't like it then don't bother. And the 3D makes the effects cooler. :)
