"Eyes wide shut" doesn't make it for the worst movie ever, but the original novella Dream Story / Arthur Schnitzler was really good. The movie bore very little resemblance to it: fin de siecle Vienna vs contemporary Manhattan.

Quite a few actually. Most Europe and Oceania. I think South America too. I'm woefully ignorant about African and Asian countries.

It's so horrible you can't take your eyes away, will make your ears bleed, and at about the halfway mark laught hysterically at the special effects. And then there is this one ridiculous line...

Andy | 1511 comments Melancholia had to be the worst - a very convincing film about depression - :( wrist slitting stuff. Jus aweful!

As for a big box office Turkey i'd pick summit like Black Hawk Down, Iron Man II or one of the later Matrix films which were so up thereselves it was unreal.

Mind there really is a lot to pick from these days, so many rehashes of ol' favourites & then even worse when, sorry.... Hollywood.... goes & remakes classic foreign films - Girl with the dragon tattoo & Let the right one in for instance - WHY!

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments TWISTER is on TV several times a week now. 'Tis the season. Have you ever chased a tornado in the snow? Worst movie that I can recall TOO FAST TOO FURIOUS. One of my boys took me to see it on Mothers' Day one year. Funny what a mother will do to spend time with her children. Funniest? RAISING ARIZONA and MY COUSIN VINNY

Oh noes, Too Fast Too Furious had just too much race-y goodness and action to be anything below mediocre (although my parents hated the first one and never saw another one again).

Margaret Skea | 136 comments it just goes to show how ignorance will cover a multitude of sins - never having been to Oklahoma, nor having seen a twister in real life, I enjoyed that movie when I saw it years ago in a small cinema with surround sound and I don't know what else, but you actually felt as if the twister was coming straight at you and about to suck you up. I found it quite atmospheric, but then I didn't know any better - sorry to all you Oklahoma folk!

We do here in Australia Happy. Only problem is not all the states participate and now they are make it start earlier and last longer than ever before. In a country with only 6 states than can make communication a bit awkward during business hours.

I know our whole family ended up very sore we'd been laughing so much... Husband still occasionally bursts into song from that one!

The movie or the book? The movie didn't do it for me but I loved the book. Although, I do love reading a lot of sci fi from the 60s and 70s, which pretty much means much of it has been birthed from an acid trip.

Yes I definitely meant the movie. Honestly, I cracked up a bit at the truth of your statement on 60-70's sci fi. The same can be said for some of the things being produced for children's television as well. You cannot tell me Yo Gabba Gabba was not a product of a least a little drug use.

message 7072: by Portia (new)

Portia "One pill makes you bigger,
And the other makes you small."

Jefferson Airplane's 60s-ish interpretation of Lewis Carroll. I still love this song.

Not familiar with kids shows, thankfully, but you gotta admit that sci fi from those eras was amazing, very different than the non-drug induced ones.

"Go ask Alice..."

Saw Grace Slick in her art studio in Santa Monica about 8 years ago. All white hair and weighs about 300 lbs. Thought she was the hottest thing in rock 'n roll in the '60's.

Twister kind of holds a special place in my heart since it was the first movie I ever snuck into as a teenager. I can understand how you feel about the misrepresentation of how Oklahoman's speak as I am from Minnesota and we do NOT talk like they do in Fargo. Occasionally the phrase 'you betchya' falls from my mouth but only when I'm doing my best Sarah Palin impression. The subject of worst movie comes at an interesting time. Personally I think one of the worst movies ever is Queen of the Damned. Any true fan of Anne Rice's work should be ashamed of that movie and wish for its banishment from civilization. On a related note, I am beyond excited to hear Anne Rice is writing another book about the vampire Lestat. He is easily one of my favorite fictional characters ever.

message 7081: by [deleted user] (new)

Twister wasn't really all that bad. I made that comment right after having watched it for the first time, and was a little bit fired up about it. We do say 'ya'll' and 'fixin to' around here. :) The storm chasing scenes were not exactly accurate, though. That's putting it mildly. It's just a movie, though. I've gotten over it. :)

Loved the original radio series, the books, the television adaptation, but the only good thing about the movie was Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent.

Yes, H2G2 was a triple plus awful movie! Like you, I really liked all the other incarnations, but the movie was beyond the Pale. Douglas Adams must still be spinning in his grave!

message 7087: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Martin Freeman made a good Arthur Dent. He got the bewildered grumpiness of the character perfectly.

Problem is, in my opinion, is that HHGTTG is extremely British and sarcastic in its humour, and on the whole, American actors don't do sarcasm that well. The only major part that had an Englishman in it was Arthur Dent. The others were Americans and mangled the lines. Ford Prefect is supposed to be as grumpy and sarcastic as Arthur... Mos Def was appalling in the role. Both the radio original, Geoffrey McGiven, and the television version played by David Dixon, were far superior.

message 7088: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) How about Battlefield Earth with John Travolta or Godzilla with Matthew Broderick or Starship Troopers with Casper van Dien or Death Becomes Her with Goldie Hawn or Escape from New York with Kurt Russell......oh, no, I think my top contender is Soldier with Kurt Russell.....I might think of something worse though! :)

message 7089: by Allison (new)

I have watched a lot of really bad movies but mostly on purpose. I was a big fan of cheesy action movies in my teens! I try and stick to the good ones now, somehow I have less time to waste on bad movies these days!

Allison | 1704 comments I recently watched Fargo. Ugh. I don't understand the craze. Felt like I'd just wasted 2 hours of my life staring at the TV with "south park eyes". (in S.P, whenever the grownups try to explain something to the kids, the kids eyes get really large and they stare unblinkingly - so I use that expression all the time when I explain something to someone and they just look uncomprehendingly at me lol) Now I see its being turned into a TV series. Good grief.
