I'm looking for a book I read many years ago. It was a children's picture book, about a town where when kittens reach a certain age, they go and get a new coat to determine what color they will be as adults. The kitten in the book goes to line up early but gets distracted, and by the time she gets back, there are no coats left and she has to have one sewn up from scraps. It's basically a story about how calico cats came to be. Any help appreciated :)

Perhaps one of the stories in the Just-So books by Kipling? Just So Stories

No, I'd remember if it were a Kipling story, it's only a picture book and only about 30 pages. The illustrations are lifelike, and although I'm not entirely sure, I think it is a butterfly that distracts the kitten by going into a warehouse.

I can't find a goodreads listing for it though. But that was from an Australian book review, so I think this is it.
