Do you know anyone who named their child after a character in a book?
I came up with Jackson because I really like the name Jack, but I don't want to use Johnathan or just Jack.
My name is Lorna and my mother named me after a character in a book - she doesn't remember what book it was. The name was actually made up by the author of Lorna Doone. It means love lorn. Do you think are personalities fit our names or our names fit our personalities?
My friend Christy named her middle son after a character in Fight Club A Novel; Tyler and his middle name is his dad's first name.
In January 1973, I named my daughter Jennifer; it is the English variation of Gwenhwyfar (Guinevere). I always loved reading about King Arthur, and that is where I got it. I didn't know even one Jennifer at the time. Jennifer ended up being the most popular name that year and several years after! Evidently, there must have been someone on a soap opera or an actress at the time named Jennifer. There were 5 Jennifer's in her 3rd grade class! Who knew? lol
I loved the name of Tristran Thorn from when I first read Stardust. My ex-husband thought it was wierd, but we compromised and named my son Treston.
I don't have kids yet but I know I want to name my first daughter - Marleigh Eyren - Marleigh because my dad's name is Mark and my mom's middle name is Leigh and Eyren because I love Jane Eyre and my best friends name is Erin. I have two dogs named from Greek Mythology - Pandora and Phoebe - my name is Greek in origin, Pandora because in college my friends and I nicknamed the suite we lived in the "sin bin" and Pandora released the sins from the box, and Phoebe was a titan (the gods that came before those we know most about) of the moon which relates to the meaning of my name in Greek and she was also the name of a character on one of my favorite shows ever Friends.
My best friend named her animals after sex and the city characters - Carrie and Samantha cats - and Mr. Big or Biggie a dog (Phoebe's brother).
I went to school with people with really bizarre names...Jaczar, Shittall, Thuy (pronounced Twee), so many others I can't think of now - I also knew someone in college who was student teacher and had a student named Female.
I really liked the name Isabella after reading Henry James's "Portrait of a Lady." The name's so popular right now, though, that I probably won't use it.A good friend of mine is named Brandon Scott. It was the name of the main character of a romance novel his mom read while she was pregnant with him.
I don't think I know anyone who admitted to being named after a book character. My mother tells me she wanted to name me Amy for Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit but obviously that didn't work out.
I did once name a cat Torey for Torey L. HaydenSince I don't have any kids maybe a cat could count.
But she's an author but mmm her books are nonfiction and she does appear in her own books...
I highly recommend Murphy's Boy
I love naming kids (and pets) after characters in literature! I like names that can be for several characters, too - like, I named one of my dogchildren Anastasia, for the Russian princess of the fairy tale, but also for Anne Elliot in Jane Austen's Persuasion (one of my favorite novels). My second dogchild is Idyllwild, which comes from one of my novels, and my third and fourth dogs are Viola and Olivia, from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and again from one of my novels. A cat I used to have was Galadriel (Lord of the Rings), and the dog we're getting next week will be Titania, the name of Shakespeare's fairy queen. I plan to name a future son Rohan from Lord of the Rings (the name of a place, rather than a character), and a future daughter Evangeline from the Irish myth.
I didn't name my son after a book name but I did take his name from a movie. His name is Connor Neil. Connor is from the movie The Highlander (with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery) and Neil is in honor of his two grandfathers, both of them named Neil. I did want Lestat, Marius, Dante or Julian but my husband didn't like them.
Petra X wrote: "I had a friend called Wendy, not such an unusual name but she was called after the Wendy in Peter Pan (which actually was the first instance of the name anyway). "My name is Wendy and my brother is Peter. My mother loved Peter Pan!!!
Becky wrote: "Who would name their child VAGINA?? Oh my goodness. That's terrible! Poor kid is in for a really, really tough life. My guess is that she's waiting at the courthouse on her 18th birthday to get THA..."
Autumn (and this thread) reminds me of my favourite story as a kid 'Princess September'. For a while my doll was called that but I got over wanting give that name to my child .

Although my children are named after family members, I had more literary freedom when naming pets...I once had a male black lab named Sawyer, a yellow female lab named Becky, and a male cat at the same time named Huckleberry. (They have all died. :( )
I currently own another male black lab named Atticus and a goofy, gray, male kitten named Dill.
yeah animals don't come back and get you for the names you give them. But I'll bet there are few Bambis out there who aren't happy with their mothers.
Sherry - I say yes about your dog, so let's hear it. On that same note, I just rescued a kitten on Saturday and named her Bella!
Bella = Beautiful in Italian :)I can't remember the movie...i think it was called Double Jeopardy (?). Anyway, the kid's name was Mattie and I fell in love w/it :)
Yes, I do know someone - my mom! She named me Jocelyn, after the book titled Jocelyn, by John Galsworthy. I have the book, haven't read it. Lame, I know... I should read that ASAP. I think I tried to as a teen, and it just totally didn't get me interested, so I never picked it up again. Anyway, that book isn't even listed here on GR! But you can find info on Galsworthy on wikipedia (I'd link but am html-challenged).
If pets count I have:Dogs:
Max (Where the Wild Things Are)
Pippi (Longstocking of course)
Cats:
Fiver (Watership Down)
Darcy (Mr. Darcy to you)
Future dog names under consideration:
Huckleberry
Sawyer (not sure I like it as well now with the Lost connotation)
Noddy (love this but think I would have to spend a lot of time explaining Enid Blyton to people in the park)
Dickon (Secret Garden - like everything but the short form).
Mel
Sherry - I'm afraid to admit (if you don't already know) that I named the kitten Bella because of Twilight although she is beautiful too! :) I got kidded about it at the rescue group. Mel, I love the name Fiver, as Watership Down is one of my favorite all time reads.
My sister's name is Laurelyn, after the tree of life in the Lord of the Rings mythology (spelled Lorelin in the book).
My boss, Ayla, after the character in The Clan of the Cave Bear.Manday, that is pretty cool that your sister was named after the Lord of the Rings Tree of Life...
I loved reading Langston Hughes in high school, so I thought that would be a great name for a son. Then I read "The Solace of Leaving Early" and for the past 4-5 years I've been hoping to have a daughter someday to name Langston!
A friend named her daughter Dagny after the woman in Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED. I liked the name and the daughter is a doll!
No, but I have named my long-haired dapple daschund "Dibbuns" after the animals in the Redwall Abbey Series. Before Dibbuns we had a long-haired daschund for 16 years. She died in 2006 after a short bout with cancer. During this time I read several Redwall books and the antics of the little animals called Dibbuns kept me smiling---so, I thought Dibbuns would be a perfect name for my new doxie.
Well, I don't know anyone personally who was named after a character/author. However, the author Elizabeth Aston was named after Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, because her parents were Jane Austen fans. Many of my favourite baby names come from characters in books.
I named my kitten Arya from Eragon.:P
I was named after a famous doctor (both my parents are doctors).
:D
My sister has an Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Peter (Peter Pan), and an Oliver (Oliver Twist), and her oldest boy, Maxwell, has the middle name Atticus (To Kill A Mockingbird). She is expecting baby #5 this year. I wonder what name she will come up with.My daughter's name is Raegan, which is a twist on Regan from King Lear. I love the name, but i hope my daughter will be nicer than Regan was.
Only if you consider The Bible a book. My mother named me after David's wife because she looked it up and it meant "my father's joy". It could be worse, she named my sister after a car. LoL
There used to be a car race from London to Brighton before WWII and the wining car one year had the name of "Genevieve".
Abbie K. wrote: "There used to be a car race from London to Brighton before WWII and the wining car one year had the name of "Genevieve". "That's not bad. I went to school with a girl named Chevelle.
My husband met a man in Kenya called "Oos-mael." Turns out his parents got the name from an envelope: U.S. Mail.
I named my son after Griffin of Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock. I read the series the year before I became pregnant and once pregnant, I dreamt I would have a boy. For awhile, when he first learned how to write, my son would write me notes and letters, like character for which he was named. He doesn't anymore because he's 14 and writing letters to your mom is like kissing or hugging her in public - unthinkable!
I wasn't actually named after Leslie from Bridge to Terabithia, but when my brother was born my parents named him Jesse, and my mom admits that the book had some influence on that decision. She can't remember if she read the book before or after I was born, though.I named my cat Jane after Jane Austen.
