Kandice Remember the Seinfeld episode where he was trying to remember the girls name that rhymed with Vagina? Perhaps there is another language where that word means something else? I don't think so, but really, as a mother can not grasp the idea....

OK, I just checked a baby name website...no Vigina.

message 103: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Haha Sue, I don't think it's supposed to be a name. Well, it is a name, but I don't think it's supposed to be a person's name! ;)

Emilly R (rosario0829e) | 198 comments I did named my son Jonathan, after a character in the Bible.O'course i do not know if the question include the Bible.

message 105: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I was recently at a wedding where the groom's son was named "Kalel" (Superman/Clark Kent's real name). All the rest of his kids, btw, had "regular" names.

message 106: by Kataklicik (new)

Kataklicik | 87 comments My mother was a teacher and she had a student everyone called "Nonamie". One day my mom came across her birthcert, and there, where the little girl's name should be, was written "NO NAME" in big letters.

Poor thing. Maybe the parents couldn't quite decide what name to give her. Or maybe they couldn't understand the procedures at the registration office. Maybe there were language barriers. Who knows? But the person who wrote "Noname" there should've realised that the little girl would be called just that!

I hope the little girl (not so little now) has done well in life.

Liz (hissheep) A long ago best friend named her son "Destiny" after a book character, but I don't remember what book - probably something around his birth year 1973.

I named my Beta fish Henry after the male lead in "Time Traveler's Wife" - not sure how they compare, LOL!

Squiggles{Kelly} (squiggles) | 61 comments I don't have any kids yet, but I am adamant that my first son be named Jeremy Atticus. My husband will have either like it or suck it up. :P K, I'm not quite that horrible, but I AM that determined!!

message 109: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) Hi Kelly,

Jeremy Atticus has a very nice rhythm and should go well with almost any last name.

One of my former students is a London boy named Atticus. A wonderful kid! His family and friends call him 'Atti'.

message 110: by Squiggles{Kelly} (new)

Squiggles{Kelly} (squiggles) | 61 comments I'm so glad to hear somebody else likes it! It's my absolute favorite name.
I wish I could use the name 'Atticus' as first name but I think my mom would throw a fit. :P

message 111: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) The Atticus I know will probably grow up to be a man who makes a great contribution. Would that influence your mother at all?

Little Atti came to me to learn to read when he was 3 years old. He was ready and there was no stopping him. He is the fourth boy in the family.

One day when Atti had figured out something (beyond his years), I said, 'You are really smart.' He said, 'That's not what my brothers say.' So I said, 'Well, your brothers are wrong!'

Richard | 46 comments We named our son Rhett. But because we live in Holland, most people think his name is Red (d's tend to become t's on Dutch tongues). We never considered calling our daughter Scarlett, because Red and Scarlett would be a bit too bloody much.

If my surname had been Vermillion, I might have been tempted...

message 113: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) Oh yea, I know a Rhett. I always forget that. Since I'm in the military, I always call him by his last name. I met his mom once and told her I wanted to name my daughter Scarlett, and she told me that she was going to insist her son marry me. He's since gone on and married someone else, but oh well.

message 114: by Josie (new)

Josie (maid_marian) For names from book characters, a friend of a friend recently named their daughter Arwen, but for unusual names in general, a family my mother knows named all their children after herbs and spices, so they have Pepper, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Sage...

message 115: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) Hi Josie,

Are the Spice kids boys or girls? I once had a cat named Oregano.

I know a family whose daughters are Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy.

message 116: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Sage wouldn't be a bad name. And I love Arwen.

message 117: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have always loved the name Pepper for a girl. Like Pepper Potts from Iron Man.

message 118: by Josie (new)

Josie (maid_marian) Pepper, Cinnamon and Sage are girls, Ginger is the boy.
Also, there's another family I vaguely know who named their kids after computer parts: Source, Force, Trace, and Mace. (I'm not entirely sure how they're related to computers at all!)

message 119: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I keep thinking of Pepper from "Good Omens". She's a little hellion of a character! ;)

message 120: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments There was a student in a school where I taught whose name was Pony Boy. Guess his parents really liked SE Hinton!

message 121: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) rebecca wrote: "There was a student in a school where I taught whose name was Pony Boy. Guess his parents really liked SE Hinton!"

Oh man. That's just wrong. Did they not know that was a nickname?

message 122: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments Good chance the parents were high or too stupid to realize - it was that kind of district!

message 123: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think lots of parents must choose their children's names when they are high. Could there be any other excuse? I remember, after picking our favorite names, agonizing over nicknames, possible initials, shortened forms.. etc., etc. etc. I just assumed everyone did that, but apparently NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 124: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Well, my name is really CAROLYN after my grandmother. BUT...my mom was obsessed with LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, so I'm Carrie. :)

message 125: by Meghan (new)

Meghan (meghanly) | 218 comments Not exactly after characters in a book - but my husband and I have two names for our baby-to-be...

Read (if it's a boy)

and

Page (if it's a girl).

I figured we would hit my passion for reading no matter what the book... :)

message 126: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Carrie wrote: "Well, my name is really CAROLYN after my grandmother. BUT...my mom was obsessed with LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, so I'm Carrie. :)"

Carolyn was the mom, so she's covered either way!

message 127: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) My name is Bryanna and my mother picked out my name when she was 14 years old from one of those Fabio on the cover, bodice ripping romance novels!

message 128: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments When I told my Mom that I was going to name my daughter Clarissa, she didn't like it and kept arguing about it. (No one had heard of it at that time.) She finally quite arguing when I told her I was thinking of changing it to Galadriel!

message 129: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I like the name of Arwen. I would name my daughter that, but I'm afraid that the non-English speaking family members will massacre it.

message 130: by Kandice (new)

Kandice NEVILLE!!!!!!!!! But leave off the Longbottom.

message 131: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) They would probably think anything from where the hell did she get that name to what kinda name is that?

I think my mom would probably pronounce it "A-win"

message 132: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, you could give your mom an easier time of it and name her Eowyn... ;)

message 133: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My suspicion is that would invite quite a bit of teasing he could do without! You have to think of the future, missy! ;)

message 134: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Oh!!!! I just thought, Longbottom would be the perfect name for a wiener dog!!!! Am I right?

message 135: by Jackie (last edited Jan 19, 2009 05:31PM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Don't be one of those parents Fiona!

Becky, she will end up with some horrid nickname if I don't give her something pronounceable.

message 136: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Elby

message 137: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You're right Jackie, but I like Eowyn.

Fiona, you potentially being one of "those" mothers made me think of the opening line of "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" by C.S. Lewis:

"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." I just love that line.

message 138: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have to admit, My oldest sons name is Shaun Patrick Zelaskowski. We were so caeful to think of any potential teasing fodder, but we overlooked his initials.

SPZ

message 139: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, but if he calls himself "Spaz" then he's automatically the coolest kid around. ;)

message 140: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Not according to him!!!! His nickname is actually Zeke. Go figure!

My daughter is an EXCELLENT soccer player and her nickname is the Darbonator. I love that one.

message 141: by Allie (new)

Allie (edithjones) Me. Our youngest is named Aislinn after the character Aisling [my husband didn't like the g on the end:] in Maeve Binchy's "Light a Penny Candle". I'd loved the name since I was a teenager reading the book, and as we have an Irish surname it wasn't hard to convince my husband to go along with it, although he had the final decision. It's pronounced Ash-LEEN - emphasis on the capitals.

message 142: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) I'm reading The Stolen Child A Novel right now and one of the characters is named Aniday. I really like it. I've been pronouncing it "ennidae" or "annidae" but I'm afraid if I named my kid that, people would say "anyday". I like it though.

message 143: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm currently listening to "Labyrinth" by Kate Mosse, and there is a character named Alaís, pronounced, to the best of my knowledge, (the reader keeps changing it) as Al-eye-ees. I really like the name, although that would be another that would be constantly mispronounced!

message 144: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alexandrans) | 69 comments I don't have kids, but I think if I did one of my favorite names (for a girl of course) would be Arya, like in Eragon. I don't know if that's a name the author invented or if it isn't in the least bit original, but the first time I heard (or read actually) it was in that book. And I like Ariana as well, and those two are kind of similar, so maybe that's why I liked it right away (I pronounce Arya are-ee-uh, I guess that's right).

message 145: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, I like that name too.

I said before (somewhere in this thread) that I like the name Lily (as in Harry Potter's mom) and would name my daughter that when I have one, but my friend is having a baby this month and she is naming her Lily, so now I can't use that name anymore... :(

message 146: by Alexandra (last edited Mar 07, 2009 10:17PM) (new)

Alexandra (alexandrans) | 69 comments Lily is a pretty name =) too bad your friend beat you to it. Maybe for a middle name then?

message 147: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I actually have a few book names that I've collected over the years to use as needed and/or desired: Viviane (Yaya Sisterhood), Dominique (Fountainhead), Baylor (Yaya Sisterhood), Scarlett (GWTW; although I probably won't use this one because I don't want to hear the asinine comments people will make). It seems like there were more, but I know that Jackson, Jacqueline, Lee, Evelyn (Unless you count the book version of Pearl Harbor, which I read after I loved the name from the movie), and Grace were not from books.

message 148: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I have a friend whose mom wanted to name her Scarlett but her very Catholic dad didn't agree...she did get the middle name Leigh(From Vivian Leigh)

message 149: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (nyab2000) | 49 comments My cousin named his newest baby Anakin. He's just a big Star Wars fan :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I loved Archie comic books when I was young and slipped into them occasionally was (usually just 4 panels) a character named Katy Keene. I loved how she had different clothes in each frame. My younger daughter is Katherine, and we've always called her Katy. And she is a clothes hound. Go figure.
