Hello! My Name Is...

Welcome, Kim! I read a lot of books in fantasy, YA and children's, too. I'm ..."
No I have not read it but it is on my list.

Hey Kim. What kind of writing do you do? Are you plotting the murder of any of the guests?
I am currently working on a YA paranormal/fantasy novel but I also like to write adult fiction/nonfiction as well. I have many ideas for b&b mysteries!

I used to be like that. I love books! But it got to the point where I had books I knew I wouldn't read again taking up valuable shelf space---really, hiding books I hadn't gotten to yet. So, I started bagging them up and donated the first wave to a local charity. Then I thought DUMMY! I should have taken them to Half-Priced Books or Bookmans or wherever to get credit for more books. That is what I'm doing now, collecting what I know I won't read again for the used book stores.
Now I try to stick to buying what I know I will read over and over, which isn't much. I tend to try used bookstores (online at Cozy Book Cellar or Powells; locally to Half-Price Books, Bookmans, or Changing Hands, etc.) or Barnes & Noble.
I started using the library more over the past few years. I made a deal with myself not to buy anything new until I'd read all the books I'd collected to read but hadn't. I used the library to continue/catch up old series I'd started from "stock" and found myself finding new series and authors (man, get me into a library or bookstore...). I've been pretty successful, only a few boxes to go!

Kim, I think that you'll really enjoy THE WESTING GAME when you get your hand on it. Anyone who reads children's books should look for it in the library.
Bed and breakfasts are fun places to set mysteries. Cool settings? Check. Interesting and varied clientele? Check. Barbara Michaels did a paranormal cozy called HERE I STAY that I really enjoyed. No vampires. Just ghosts and psychic echoes.

Welcome Deb and Shirley! I hope you'll join in reading and discussing books with us.
Deb - you'll find a lot of new authors here. Do you have any interests you'd like to see in a mystery, or are there types you don't want? We all have favorites, (mine are animals and smart-mouth women) and can give you plenty of suggestions. There are cozies to fit almost anything these days.
Hey Shirley. I envy all that time to read :) Cozies are great as "between" books. They're fun, and I like to learn a little about the job/hobby/craft that might be featured.

Be sure and check out some of the topics in the Cozy Q&A section. And look at prior discussions to see if any of the books sound interesting to you.

Diana, I just love Carrie Bebris' Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mysteries! I've read the first five so far. My favorite was North by Northanger. I also like Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries, but I'm way behind in that series. I think I've read the first four or five, and have the next two on my TBR shelf, but just can't seem to get around to them, with all of my other reading.

My favorite Mr and Mrs Darcy is The Deception at Lyme. Probably because Persuasion is my favorite Austen :)

Kate wrote: "Hi Diana. Welcome :)" Thanks! I see that you ordered a Jenn Mckinley. I like that series. She also has another one. It's called Books Can Be Deceiving (Library Lover's Mystery). It's pretty good too!

Hi, Diana. Good to meet a new friend. I see you have read Thistle and Twigg. It was a fun read!

I haven't read it yet. It's on my tbr shelf. Now I will though :) I'm always looking for recommendations!

Welcome to the group Diana! I hope you'll find many new cozies and friends here. It looks like you're getting a good start on adding to your tbr :) Have you read
by Shannon Hale?

I loved those. I wish she'd come out with another one.

That's the only one I haven't read yet, but Persuasion is my favorite, too, so I am looking forward to it! I thought I had it preordered for when it came out in the pb format I wanted; will have to check on that.
I liked the Northanger one because the mystery fit in so well with Elizabeth's "delicate condition", and she finally found herself feeling like the mistress of Pemberley, instead of always feeling under the shadow of Darcy's late mother. Also, having to put up with Lady Catherine was so funny! Elizabeth also managed to get rid of that awful doctor - that was funny, too.

I love mysteries with a lot of food in them, starting back with Diane Mott Davidson's CATERING TO NOBODY. I'm very excited to see that your picks for this month are two writers that I blog with! I look forward to talking with you about books...

I have been reading cozies for about 2 years or so..and really enjoy them!
My first cozies were by Monica Ferris and Miranda Bliss - I really like their books!
I think my favorite types of cozies feature needlework and food, ( and recipes )
I also enjoy reading books by Diane Mott Davidson, Heather Webber ( and Heather Blake ) =)
Jenn McKinlay and many more! and I plan on reading the series by Lucy Burdette, Ive heard good things about her series! =) they are on my to be read list.
Im looking forward to getting to know everyone and discover more cozies!

If you like Miranda Bliss, you'll like the author's other two series written as Casey Daniels and Kylie Logan.
Under the Casey Daniels pseudonym, she writes the Pepper Martin series. Pepper works at a cemetery by day and as a (unlicensed) private eye to the ghosts she can see and speak with by night.
Under the Kylie Logan name, she writes the Button Box mysteries, which feature Josie Giancola, a leading expert on buttons and button shop owner.
I've read all three series to date and have enjoyed them. I love the author's writing style and especially love the humor of the Pepper Martin books.

Thanks for the tips Karen!
Im pretty sure that I have the first in the Button Box series on my to be read shelf, it sounds really good!
I really enjoy books by this author. =D
Welcome to the group Lucy and Melissa! Glad you found us, and I'm looking forward to discussing cozies with you.
Lucy - I just posted a folder for authors and bloggers. I hope you'll post more there about your books. I haven't read the Key West series, but loved the Advice Column mysteries. And let us know about your blog!
Melissa - I hope you'll find lots more cozies here! Does your taste in cozies reflect your hobbies, or things you wish you could do? I enjoy reading about things I'd like to try one day.

I especially like book challenges and group reads. I belong to one book group (carried on from my workplace) and several online groups. I am new to GR and this is my first group here. New GR friend, Kate, had this group listed on her profile and when I clicked on the link I saw your July read was On What Grounds, which I just picked up at a book sale. Seemed prophetic that I should join.

Some authors that I like are Robin Paige, Susan Rogers Cooper, P. B. Ryan, Lea Wait, and Louise Penny.

I will go over and find the folder--thanks! The blog is www.mysteryloverskitchen.com and we are 8 cozy writers (well, 9, but Mary Jane Maffini is on hiatus.) Wendy Watson, Cleo Coyle, Avery Aames, Sheila Connelly, Ellery Adams, Krista Davis, Peg Cochran and I (Lucy Burdette) post recipes and stories about our lives and our books every day. My husband thinks it's hysterical because I won't let him eat dinner until I take pictures first. I don't photograph the flops though. LOL Lucy

Welcome to the group Linda! I love Cooper's Milt Kovak series. Glad to see you jumping right in with On What Grounds.
I agree that some series go on longer than they should. And I've wasted time continuing to read some of them out of a sense of loyalty, but finally had to give them up. And if the first book in a series doesn't grab my attention I don't read any more of them.

Let me know how you like Deception at Lyme. My other favorite is Pride and Prescience. It was fun seeing Bingley's sister go crazy:)

I have actually read before the movies start before. I read every chance I get. Nice to meet you

About ten years ago I discovered cozy mysteries. I've started to read the series that were translated to german. But I soon found out that there are much more titles ans series that weren't translated. So I start reading in english. It was a great way to improve my
English skills. :-)
