Hi Nell,

I am glad that you liked White House Chef Series ...!

The interesting thing is that I hesitated to read them till a long time ...simple because I didn't think that a 'White House' setting would be very cozy...! However, I happened to read "Hail To The Chef", and loved it so much that immediately added Julie Hyzy to my favourites authors list ...and then rapidly read all the books in the series, one after the other till "Affairs Of Steak", which was her latest at the time.

And now I recommend this series to every reader I come across...! Lolz :-) Haven't read her Manor House series though, but looking forward to them...!

Actually, this series is already in my ever growing 'books-to-read' list...! Or maybe I should say TBR list...? I have only recently joined Goodreads, and this is a new term for me, that I have first encountered here...but I think it means 'to-be-read'...? Lolz :-) Please excuse my ignorance...from now on I'll be using this, much easier and fun...! Anyway, glad to know you are finding the book enjoyable... I am also looking forward to them...!

Welcome Lauren

I think of Mary Higgins Clark's novels as more suspense than cozy mystery but definitions vary. The shorthand version is in the tradition of Agatha Christie. Here's a link to a group discussion trying to define what a cozy is.

Welcome Penny and Lauren! Feel free to ask any questions, someone will probably be able to help you. I think a lot of us were reading cozy mysteries before the term existed. We just knew we liked that type of book. I've added too many cozies to my tbr to ever get around to, but at least I'll always have options :)

Ramla - yes, tbr means to-be-read. I learned the term when I joined GR too. In another group I'm in, we set up a dictionary topic partly to explain any slang being used.

Susan W (writerone) | 11 comments Hello,

I've been lurking here for quite awhile - Goodreads forums confuse me (the set up) so I hope this shows up in the correct place!

I'm a fanatical cozy reader and some of my favorites characters are Agatha Raisin, Jessica Fletcher (fan of the TV show and then the books), Jaine Austen (Laura Levine), Mira James (Jessica Lourey, Murder by the Month), and so many newer characters as well.

Hopefully I'll begin to feel comfortable posting on here soon.

Looking forward to reading your comments.

Hi Susan, it's good to see you come out of lurkdom :~) Don't worry about any mistakes, we've all made them, and like Nell said, there's always someone willing to help.

I haven't read any of the Jessica Fletcher books, but a while back my cable provider added a Hallmark channel that shows Murder She Wrote. It's been nice seeing the old episodes again.

No, they don't get old! For me it's like watching "I Love Lucy." I think I have all the dialogue memorized at this point in my life, but it's still funny!

message 870: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valeriemichigan) Hi! I'm Valerie and I'm a librarian (though I work as a circulation clerk at the moment) in Michigan. I've been a voracious reader the majority of my life, and read a wide variety of genres, but I've only really gotten into cozies in the last 4 or 5 years. I find that I mostly enjoy series that are focused on the food industry (or the book industry, tho' there are some series I like that fall outside of that. I don't mind the paranormal as long as they're not too "dark" and as long as there are no vampires or zombies.

I'm actually surprised I haven't gotten into cozies sooner since my choice of tv shows is usually some sort of crime drama/police procedural show. My favorites include NCIS, CSI: NY, and Forensic Files.

Outside of reading, I enjoy writing letters to the children I sponsor through Compassion International, playing with my adorable niece (she's currently 2), taking nature walks & nature photography, and playing in my water garden (which isn't quite thawed out yet this spring, so no playing yet).

I've been a member of Goodreads for several years, but in the last few weeks/months, I've been trying to be more active within discussion groups and other social aspects of the site. I find that I go in "spurts" with that. I'll be active for a while and then quiet for a while and then active again.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the group through the various discussions. :)

Have you read Jenn McKinlay's Library Lovers series? It starts with Books Can Be Deceiving

Hi Valerie, though I am usually quite flexible about the themes ...but I must admit that I do especially enjoy food and books based series...!

The website that Nell has suggested is great if you want to search by themes :-)

I would also recommend Death on Demand (Book store) Series by Carolyn G. Hart. The books are well written with finely plotted mysteries. There is humour and romance (without love-triangle) too. There is a little profanity but not so much as to spoil the pleasant ambience.

First Books Death On Demand (Death On Demand, #1) by Carolyn G. Hart Design For Murder (Death On Demand, #2) by Carolyn G. Hart

If you don't mind love-triangles then Cupcake Bakery Mystery Series by Jenn McKinlay is also good.

Welcome Valerie! I always wanted to work in a library, but knew I wouldn't get any work done :)

I've found a bunch a British series through PBS and my library that I've gotten hooked on. One of my favorites is Pie in the Sky, which mixes mystery and food.

I hope to see you around here during your active spurts :)

Welcome Mary ...you sound very much like me :-) I never buy a single book ...as I always like to keep at least two books as a backup for when I finish the first one...! Hi Mary, welcome to the group! I usually don't have a problem with having another book ready. But I do start panicking when I'm near the end of a book I love - I really don't want it to end - or if it's the latest in a series and I know I'll have to wait for the next one :)

Me too...! :-) That's why I have developed a habit of always keeping the last few books in my favourite series in reserve ...to be read later as a special treat ...but not until some new books are added in that series...! :-)

Welcome Mary, Starr and Cinged.

Each month the group features two cozy mystery series selected by a group member. You will find lots of book recommendations here.

message 891: by Beth (new)

Beth | 206 comments Welcome to the group, Valerie, Brian, Cinged, Mary, and Starr! If any of you besides Valerie are looking for mystery series based on the job of the protagonist (eg caterer or librarian), historical period or other topics, I recommend the following website:
http://stopyourekillingme.com/

Also, Mary, you sound a lot like me. I have to have at least 3-4 books on my TBR pile on my nightstand, so I have a variety to choose from for reading next, or I start to panic, too. ;-)

And Starr, there's nothing I like better than finding a new-to-me author and realizing that there's a whole series of books by him/her waiting for me to savor.

Welcome Starr! I hope you'll find more new-to-you authors here. Do you have any favorite themes?

message 893: by Starr (new)

Starr Hi Jaxnsmom. My favorite themes are cozy mysteries that take place at an Inn, Bed n Breakfast, and during a snowstorm. I really liked Heather Horrocks "Who-dun-him Inn."

message 894: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Douglas | 2 comments Hi, my name is Kristy and I live in Maine (where it is currently doing this weird snow-rain thing). I'm so excited to find this group! My favorite cozy mysteries have a paranormal/supernatural element or are set in an isolated area, like a manor house or castle (if only I could find a paranormal cozy set at a secluded manor house...). Recently, I've been trying to branch out and I discovered the Bibliophile mysteries and the Haley Randolph mysteries.
