I do that, too. Sadly, it makes my TBR list almost useless as a guide to what to read next. Maybe I should do it more like Ms. Bridget. Clean up the list and start working my way through it.

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 107 comments Hello, my name is Ramla Zareen and I joined Goodreads about a month before, and since I am a big fan of "Cozy Murder Mystery" genre so I am very happy to be a part of this group. Apart from being an eager reader of fiction, I also indulge in my passion of books by working on my blog:

Brooke Blogs (brookeblogs) | 6 comments Hi everyone! I'm Brooke (31 & from Ohio) and I'm so happy to join this group. I love cozy mysteries and I am excited to read with you all. I have a blog where I review all types of books and products, and that keeps me busy - as do 2 daughters, 4 cats and a boyfriend. :) I work as a clerk at my local public library. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and reading together!

Nancy Kuehl (nancykk) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Nancy, and I currently live in Kansas. I'm single with two lovable cats and love to read cozy mysteries as the ultimate escape. I was recently let go from my job as an editor, and decided after more than 30 years in the publishing business, it's time for a change. I'm working on opening my own pet boutique on the West Coast. I've read a lot of cozy mysteries, but my favorite series are the ones that have pets.

message 808: by Mel (new)

Mel R (melsbookdiary) Hi, I am Melyssa from Colorado. I am relatively new to the concept of cozy mysteries in the last couple of years. I discovered them one day while walking around Barnes & Noble. There was a colorful display of cozies and I fell in love with the cute and colorful covers!! LOL I tend to prefer cozies that coincide with holidays, or have subject matter related to my interests like crafting, books, pets, supernatural, etc. I am currently working my way through A Magical Bakery series and Pampered Pets.

Welcome!

Nancy - Wow, not only a big change in jobs and going from employee to employer, but a big move too. Lots of luck!! I'm sure a cozy escape can come in handy with all you've got going!

Melyssa - Cozies do have fun covers, and some great puns for titles. I love that there are ones for every interest, although I think animal related ones are my favorites.

It's the perfect job for people who love books, reading or writing them! (or in my case, both). Though it does result in having an actual physical TBR pile that is a total safety risk in an earthquake.

Beth (b2thi6) | 10 comments Hello, my name is Bethie. I live in the far north of New Zealand and I am so lucky to work part-time at the local public library. I get to see the new books when they arrive. My favourite genre is the cozy mystery, especially by British writers, and I love recommending books to Library patrons. My favourite cozy series are Agatha Raisin, the Spellman files, Louise Penny, Maisie Dobbs. It all started with Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew.

message 814: by Susan (new)

Susan Cargle Hi Beth!
Trixie Belden was what started me down the cozy mystery track. I like all the authors you listed. And I would add Margaret Maron and Donna Andrews as favorites.

message 815: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 182 comments Hi Beth! You sound like me! Though I never read Trixie Belden (don't know why. Maybe they didn't have those books in our library!), I'm a part-time library minion who loves recommending books. I read a lot of kids' stuff, too, just to be able to make recommendations, of course :D

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 107 comments Hi, couldn't resist joining in the conversation, but speaking of kid's stuff, have you read Enid Blyton's "Five Find Outers And A Dog" series? Those were the books that initiated my love for reading mysteries...! After that I went on to "Agatha Christie"... and from then onwards mysteries became my favourite genres...! Though I do read other genres as well.

message 817: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 18 comments Hi! My name is Shirley and I live close but not on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I work in our local school system (not a teacher) and have loved reading for as long as I can remember. Like Beth..it all started with Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew. I learned to read early (by about age 4) because my brother had the book.."I Wish That I Had Duck Feet"...he would not read it to me, so my mom said.."I guess you'll just have to learn"...so with her help, I did and it's been full-force ahead. Looking forward to lively conversations and great book recommendations from the group. I absolutely adore most cozy mysteries. I love those geared towards crafts and hobbies, but I do not limit just to that. Actually any mystery is fair game! Thanks for allowing me to dip my toes in the water!

Yes, I read and liked Famous Fives too...! But the series I am talking about is another one. It's "Five Find Outer's And A Dog", and though it's not as popular as "Famous Five", I actually liked it better. It has Fatty who is the brain and the leader of the group and who also has a dog called Buster. Then there are Daisy and Larry. And Pip and Bets. Who is the youngest but her contribution is usually invaluable. So these five kids and dogs solve the mysteries, robberies, kidnapping etc, that take place in their small town. Much to the annoyance of the local village policeman Mr. Goon, who especially hates Fatty for being more intelligent, solving the mysteries before him, and for getting the admiration of the Inspector...! Mr. Goon often complains to the kids parents for their 'interference' and especially gets Pip and Bets, whose parents are very strict, in a great deal of trouble. To take revenge and to add to the fun, the kids often play tricks on Mr. Goon by disguises and red-herring clues... oh I could go on and on...! Lolz :-) But if anyone is interested then they could maybe read "The Mystery Of The Holly Lane" which is actually the first mystery book that I read...! I mean, I know we are adults now...but well, a mystery is a mystery, right?! Besides it's never too late to read a good book...! And I have to confess that I do occasionally re-read few of the books of my childhood, now and again...! Lolz :-)

By the way, this could be a good topic for discussion, "what is the first mystery book that you read?" Though maybe that discussion is already initiated?

Welcome Bethie! I would love to work in a library, but I'm afraid I'd get fired for hiding all the new books I wanted to read, and then reading them during work hours :)

Welcome Shirley! Do you brave the vacation traffic and go to the Outer Banks, or do you visit during the off-season? I used to vacation there, but haven't been in years. I can't imagine how much more it's probably grown, I hope it's kept it's charm. It sounds like your brother did you a favor :)

I look forward to seeing both of you in the discussions!

It would be an interesting challenge to try to dredge from memory the first mystery I read! I might have been the Famous Five! Or the Hardy Boys. I was very big on the Hardy Boys.

Yes, there was a time when I was a big fan of Hardy Boys as well... In fact, I have even read few of Nancy Drew... and the Three Investigators... All these three series seemed to me to be in the same category,... but I somehow liked Hardy Boys best...! Though once I started Agatha Christie I felt I was too mature for them... and yet I still sometimes go back to Enid Blyton's Five Find Outer's And A Dog series...! For some reason they still have the power to bring a smile to my face...! Lolz :-)

Well, I am settled in Germany since the last 8 years or so. And though they have a huge library in Frankfurt am Main, where I live, most of the books are in German...! Of course, there is an English section there, but it's comparatively small, and rarely has new releases. Since I have already read, and re-read, all the books, of my interest, in there...So there would be no need to hide the books to read if I were working there...! However, I feel sure that if I were maybe working in some library in UK or States, then I might be tempted to first read the books, at least the new arrivals by my favourite authors, before letting them be available for others...! Lolz :-)

My reading story is similar. My mother told my older sister (whose name is Shirley ;D) to read the Sunday comics to me. She would read them to herself, crack-up laughing and after I begged and begged finally read them to me. I got sick of that and asked my mother to teach me to read and she did. By the time I started Kindergarten, I was reading books at story time to both the Kindergarten and first grade classes! I do give my sister credit.

Welcome Jess! You're just in time to join us for our February reads. I'm guessing you have an e-reader, or access to a really good library, as I have heard how expensive books are in Australia. I'm sure you can find many new cozy mystery series here. After trying a variety, you'll have to let us know which types you like best.

Kerri | 17 comments Hi, I'm Kerri. I'm 27 and I live in Iowa. I love cozy mysteries and was happy to find this group a few weeks ago! My first cozy mystery series was the Hannah Swensen mysteries a few years ago. I've since expanded into the Chocoholic mysteries, the Manor House mysteries, the Book Collector mysteries, the Miss Julia series, Agatha Christie novels, and the Museum mysteries. I'm currently reading Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon, the first book in the Commissario Brunetti mystery series that takes place in Venice, Italy. I'm looking forward to finding new series to read.

Welcome, Kerri...! I have only recently joined Goodreads but am finding it both interesting and informative. By the way, if by Manor House series you mean the one by Julie Hyzy, then I must add that I am a big fan of her White House Chef Mystery Series. It's one of my most favourite series of Cozy Mysteries...! :-) Please do read them as well when you get a chance. And if by Museum Mysteries, you mean the ones by Sheila Connolly, then I have read the first book in that series and liked it too...! And most importantly, Agatha Christie is my all-time favourite mystery author...! :-) Hope you are enjoying her books. Recently re-read Lord Edgware Dies and loved it yet again...!

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you better...!

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, the Manor House series is by Julie Hyzy and the Museum Mysteries are by Sheila Connolly. I haven't read the White House Chef Mysteries, I'll add that to my list. I'm with you about Agatha Christie, she's my favorite too! I'm actually trying to write a mystery and she is my writing role model.
Since you like Agathah Christie, I highly recommend the Book Collector Mysteries by Victoria Abbott. There are three books out so far, I've read the first two. The first book is called The Christie Curse and has a wonderful Christie-like turn at the end. I loved it! The main character, Jordan is great. I can relate to her easily, she's funny and intelligent, loves her family.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Hi everyone,
I'm Lauren and I read many different genres but mysteries and thrillers have always been my mainstay.

I'm not really sure, but I think I've been reading cozies for years without realizing it. My first were books by Mary Higgins Clark (would she be considered a cozy mystery writer as most of her heroines are amateur sleuths or people caught up in a mystery accidentally?)

I recently finished Charlaine Harris's Lily Bard series and adored it, which led me to search out similar stories.

Looking forward to reading and chatting with you all.

Welcome, Lauren...! I haven't read any of the two authors that you mentioned so can't really comment on their books ...but I am sure that you will find loads of recommendations for wonderful cozy mystery series through Goodreads...! :-)

I would suggest either White House Chef Mystery Series By Julie Hyzy or Death On Demand Mystery Series by Carolyn G. Hart.

White House Chef Series features Olivia (Ollie) Paras, White House assistant (later, executive) chef, in Washington DC. In my opinion, this is a wonderful series...! Mysteries are finely plotted with satisfying conclusions. Characters are interesting. Especially the protagonist comes across to me as a smart, caring and loyal person. The writing style is both refined and entertaining, and the language is clean. The romantic element is unsettled in the first few books in the series, but after that it is wonderful as the protagonist becomes happily involved with a steady partner who both respect and appreciates her.

Death On Demand Series features Annie Laurance, proprietor of the 'Death on Demand' book store, located in the fictional South Carolina island community of Broward's Rock. Again its my opinion that its a delightful series, with finely plotted mysteries and humour as well. The romance part is good too as the protagonist is happily involved with a steady partner. The books do contain a little profanity here and there, but not so much as to make it unacceptable.

By the way, I noticed on your profile that one of your favourite books is by "Julia Quinn" ...and thought that I'd mention here that she is one of my favourite authors for Historical Romances as well...! Have you tried Judith McNaught? I really love both her writing style and male protagonists...! Lolz

Well, anyway... looking forward to interacting with you further...!
