For Whom the Bell Tolls is a favorite of mine. I've had The Old Man and the Sea checked out of the library for while but haven't gotten to it yet. They sent me a reminder this morning that I must return it soon.

Aside from Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky many years ago, I haven't read any of the great Russian novels

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 743 comments Buck, we are reading For Whom the Bell Tolls in the Hemingway group in November. Please join us.
This is my second Tolstoy. Loving it. Read some limited Russian novels. Not Crime and Punishment yet.

It's a great book, read it before the film is released so that you have your own ideas of what it should look and feel like

The Book Thief is definitely a book to read, long before you die - certainly better than many on our list of 50.

We saw the movie last week. It's very good - Oscar stuff. The book is a great book.

Jan (electricalstorm) | 3 comments Lisa wrote: "Jan Gal, what's Cloud Atlas like? Are you attempting the top 100 list?"

I quite like it so far, Lisa. The stories are written in an unusual way. They are different and they also intertwine! I think each can find a fav character in the book (each character bears different way of speaking, sense of humour). Were you thinking to read Cloud Atlas? :)

So far I'm not going strictly for top 100. You think I should? :D Could be though that I read books from the list while I'm picking them intuitively. ;)

Have a nice evening everyone!

Here's my review of Cloud Atlas, which I read earlier this month:

I was was disappointed, considering the hype this book, and especially its movie, has gotten. About three quarters through I was ready to abandon it, but I stayed with it and it managed to redeem itself somewhat. It is a collection of novellas of different prose styles and timeframes, each interrupted by the next, and then resumed later. There is a pretext of the stories being interrelated, but there is no substance to the interrelation. It was simply an invented literary device that worked poorly. Two of the stories are pretty good: The intrigue adventure of Luisa Ray, and the comedic escape of Timothy Cavendish from a home for the senile. The others are not bad, but are seriously degraded by having to be read on the unexpected installment plan.

Cloud Atlas just barely gets three Goodreads stars.

I'm working my way through the Harry Potter series and also reading 'The Life of Charlotte Bronte' by Elizabeth Gaskell. It's beautifully written, more like a novel than an autobiography.
