I was also suspicious of Clarissa in the beginning. I figured Zeke was being set up but I thought for a different reason than what really happened and I didn't figure out why. But it was too convenient how he could hear everything through the vent. I knew someone knew he was listening.

Still not done! But I'm up to page 300 and Eve (of course) had figured it all out. Including Peabody and McNab. Poor McNab, he's got it bad.

Don't you just love that McNab told her he wasn't done with them. I also kind of swooned over him when he told Eve it was none of her business and she was crossing a line.

I didn't guess what Clarissa was up to, I was just suspicious. What did Eve say at the beginning of the book - she was suspicious of coincidence. I agree, the vent was just too easy and he was so naive and sweet. I think the part that made me really know that something was really not right was her opposition to the police. It was so over the top.
I agree - poor McNabb. Peabody is going to run him in circles!

Oooh! I loved that part. We (and Eve) finally saw that Mr. Easy-going McNab has a tough side. Go McNab!

Finished it finally. I have to say that for me, the mysteries are becoming secondary to the interactions between the characters I've come to know and love. I loved the new side of McNab that we glimpsed. I think the boy has what it takes to take on Peabody and be part of Eve's team. It was touching to see how much Eve missed the little touches and strokes from Roarke when he was irritated with her and to see her struggle with her apology. I was a little surprised that Eve wasn't more livid about Clarissa faking the kind of abuse Eve suffered for real. Peabody doesn't know anything about that does she? I think I remember that Roarke told Feeney, but Eve doesn't know he knows.

One thing that struck me: the book was published in 1999 and the Twin Towers was on the list of possible targets.

I was struck by the mention of the Twin Towers as well. Kind of gave me chills. I was in New York in July of 2001 with my kids, down at the Plaza in between the Towers.
And I agree with you completely. It's the people I'm so attached to now. Though I like police procedurals - I enjoy reading about the steps that are taken to solve the mystery.
And I just have to share - my son just got engaged!

I agree with both of you about liking the relationships almost more than the mystery. It's nice to see them grow and change.

Thanks, Susan! He just turned 22 and they've been dating since sophomore year. Amazing.

And I think Robb does a very good job of keeping readers intrigued - I applaud her for having a married couple as her main characters. But because of their issues, there's alot of growing and changing that needs to happen.

I was struck by the mention of the Twin Towers too. Another memorable scene for me was Roarke hanging off the side of the Statue of Liberty and how Eve hauled him in to safety. Their love for each other is so amazing! Here I am talking about these characters like they are real people again. :)

Almost time for Witness in Death. I will probably be getting a late start on this one. My mother-in-law passed away on Tuesday. She was an incredible woman and we're really going to miss her. Plus, we're dealing with all the things that follow such a loss. Needless to say, my reading time has been reduced, and I'm runing behind on my buddy reads. But I'm really looking forward to the comforting familiarity that is Eve and Roarke and Company. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more McNab and She-body!

I'm so sorry, Christine. I'm dealing with the same thing right now, we're back in Louisiana cause my dad passed away yesterday. My mom seems to be handling it ok so far. I just don't know how much reading I'm going to get to this week.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Susan. It took me several days to have much desire, let alone time, to read. Even now there is still so much to do. My thoughts are with you.

I'm so sorry, Susan and Christine on both your losses. My prayers go out to you both and your families. It's amazing how much minutia there is to take care of when someone dies. But sometimes that's a good thing, as well. I will be thinking about you both.

I have started Witness in Death. I am on page 96. I think I might have it done by tomorrow maybe or Saturday. I will be here when you are ready.

I'm not going to be able to start this until Sunday. I have to wait until the shelf for Bingo is called. If it's Sci-fi romance, this is the only book I have that fits. I sound like a crazy person!

I just started this one today. Had to take my middle daughter back to college this weekend, so I didn't get alot of reading time. I like the fact that it seems to be a tribute to Agatha Christie. So far so good.

I don't know why but this one slowed down for me. I keep putting it down and then picking it back up later. I'm having a hard time sticking with it.

I liked it Leslie. I couldn't figure this one out. I liked the theater angle and the Agatha Christie homage.

I just finished it and ended up really liking it at the end. It seemed to pick up in the last third for me. I had it figured out who did it, but not the how or why or anything else. I loved all the twists and turns. And Eve was really vulnerable in this one, which I always like. She was sweet to Nadine. And I loved the scene (view spoiler)[ where she made the romantic dinner for Rourke. I was thinking that she tends to act more like a traditional man in their relationship and then later she tells him he's acting like a wife. Cracked me up! (hide spoiler)]

I just started it. I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny, but I laughed out loud when Eve asked the name of the murdered actor and Roarke responded with "A very hot property. I suppose he's cooled off considerably now."

I kind of feel like I'm watching an episode of Murder She Wrote.

I woke up this morning and one of my first thoughts was that given Roarke's accent it's more like an episode of Remington Steele rather than Murder She Wrote. Did anyone else watch that show in the 80s? I had such a crush on Pierce Brosnan. *sigh*

I don't know Dee - I can't imagine Rourke waxing his chest. I think that's too girlie for him. And Pierce does have the perfect accent! He was sooooo sexy as Remington Steele.

i would ust think with some of the scenes that a hair chest would get in the way - but then that's just me...lol!

I get the appeal of a hair-free chest, but I like a little hair. Somehow seems more "manly" I guess.

Dee, I think that threat Eve used was in the last book we read. I assumed she was just kidding. You think he really does?

i don't think so, but, his ability to joke about something like that and not get offended to me makes it more plausible...

And his undergarments! Don't forget his undies! I was just wondering if I would care what he wears underneath when he looks so darn good. Maybe we can get a group rate on therapy? Nah, it wouldn't be half as fun if we didn't talk about them like they're real.

Christine - I think this is our group therapy!! You know what they'd say about us in the south: "bless their hearts, they are talking about some man's underwear and he isn't even real!"

But quite frankly, my husband gets cranky when I talk about his underwear with other people, so I have to resort to fictional characters.

I just finished chapter five. Poor McNab! He's so hot for She-body and she just doesn't get it, does she? And what's with her and Charles Monroe? She doesn't really impress me as the two-man-at-a-time type. Hmmm....I wonder what kind of underwear McNab wears. Sorry, I just has to throw that in there.
