2012 January - Pick It For Me! Challenge

It was fun looking through your lists! Here are my picks for you:
1. First Day

Hi Sue!
Thanks for the picks. I am super-excited to start Touch the Dark :D. I will also try and seeif I can do A Game of Thrones.
I am also totally up for a buddy read with Murder at the Vicarage. Should I PM you to work out when to start?

***I hope that you find something out of here that you will enjoy this month. If not, just let me know. =)
Welcome the New Year
1. First Day: (Help them welcome the New Year with a challenge!) Challenge your pickee by recommending a book that is out of their comfort zone.
**Love & Loyalty: I saw that you read the first one. I enjoyed all three of them, but I think I liked the second one best.
2. Second Day: (Daughters go back to their birth homes) Choose a book from their favorite authors/genre or a book from one of their well-rated on-going series
** Cowgirls Don't Cry & Raising Kane: I noticed that you've read a few books from this series. Of these two I liked Raising Kane a lot.
3. Third Day: (People will stay at home today) Pick a long book from their TBR that will occupy them on this day.
**A Discovery of Witches & A Breath of Snow and Ashes: I've seen a few reviews about a Discovery of Witches. I think it starts out a little slow, but the overall consensus is that it's a pretty good book. I chose A Breath of Snow and Ashes because it was the next in the series that you have not read yet, and it has a lot of pages.
During the New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: (Rabbits enjoy learning about other culture) . Recommend a book that is set in a different country than your pickee is from.
**The Red Scarf, The Russian Concubine, &Sarah's Key: The first two book are by the same author. They focus around Russian culture. The Red Scarf takes place in Russia. The Russian Concubine takes place in China, and Sarah's Key takes place in Paris. Sarah's Key was also made into a movie; there were a few times I had to stop and take a break. It is pretty heartbreaking.
5. Welcome, Dragon!: (Dragons are powerful and HOT :P) Pick a book with a HOT cover or an all-round yummy hot book.
**Dragon Bound, Kate's Crew, & Pleasure of a Dark Prince: I thought Dragon Bound was sort of fitting for the category. Kate's Crew is short, I was also thinking about putting this in the #1 spot. I'm not sure how many menage books you've read. Pleasure of a Dark Prince is really good. It's by Kresley Cole. I noticed that you've read the second in the series. Dark Prince is the 9th in the series, so I'm not sure if you'd want to read them out of order. In this case I don't think it would hurt anything.
6. Poor Cat: (Cat was left out of the zodiac because of rat's trick) Recommend a book from their TBR that has been neglected or a book that you think should be pushed up.
**City of Bones & Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
7. Pass the Luck Around: Recommend a book (or two) you loved that was recommended to you (either by your friend or from the previous PIFM).
**The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf, The MacKade Brothers: Rafe and Jared, & The MacKade Brothers: Devin and Shane: I thought both Naked Werewolf books by Molly Harper were really funny. I noticed you read the first one so I thought that I would add the second one. I love the MacKade Brothers, especially Rafe and Devin. Another good series about four brothers is by Lauren Dane. They are the Chase Brother's Series.
Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)
8. Spread The Love: Share the new books/series you are psyched to read in the New Year that your pickee hasn't read yet.
**Clockwork Angel & Nothing Ever Happens
9. Lantern Festival: (Matchmakings happen today) Pick the books from your pickee's TBR that caught your eye.
**Eragon & Mistress of Rome

Welcome the New Year
1. First Day: I didn't see much on your shelves that would be considered straight fiction so for this category I am going to recommend Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I absolutely loved this book! The story left me feeling so good, just like a really good romance. Or maybe, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It was also a really good book. Both of these were excellent in audio if are interested!
2. Second Day: Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione - you gave the first book 5 Stars, you have to continue the series!! I think it only gets better!
3. Third Day: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I've not read this, but I've heard good things and it is on your TBR!
During the New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: Another book from your TBR and an absolute favorite of mine, Something About You by Julie James. I can't wait for the next book!
5. Welcome, Dragon!: Hot covers?! Well, these are just a few of my favorites!! All are really good books too!

6. Poor Cat: You have several books by Julia Quinn on your TBR that have been there quite a while, even though you read and liked the ones before them. So here I am going to recommend Mr. Cavendish, I Presume or When He Was Wicked.
7. Pass the Luck Around: I read Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey as a PIFM book recently and adored it! I am trying to find time to read the next one in the series, hopefully I can fit it in this month. Another choice would be, Out Of Her League by Kaylea Cross. I read this for a discussion several months ago and have continued with the series - I just finished the fourth book and it was amazing!
Celebrate the New Year
8. Spread the Love: I am really looking forward to starting Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis soon. I have heard such good things and will be reading this in January. If you are interested, I would be happy to read it with you!
9. Lantern Festival: You have two books on your TBR that I have been wanting to read - Cowboy Casanova by Lorelei James and A Taste of Midnight by Lara Adrian. If you want to read either of those just let me know!

1. First Day: You read a lot of different kinds of books, so I’m not sure what to recommend, but you’d probably like Remarkable Creatures, wonderful historical fiction about women who discovered fossils in Lyme, England.
2. Second Day: (Daughters go back to their birth homes) Crunch Time (Davidson)
3. Third Day: (People will stay at home today) The French Gardener looks somewhat long
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: (Rabbits enjoy learning about other culture) The Earth Hums in B Flat, a mystery set in Wales and told from the perspective of a young girl.
5. Welcome, Dragon!: The Mane Event
6. Poor Cat: Mockingjay (I see that you’ve read the first two; I would recommend that you read the third, which resolves things as much as can be)
7. Pass the Luck Around: I liked Virgin River (the first of a modern romance series) pretty well; it was recommended to me a couple of months ago. I also enjoyed Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake, a funny, light regency romance.
Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)
8. Spread The Love: Silent in the Grave looks spooky and romantic
9. Lantern Festival: The Year of Living Scandalously—I like Julia London

I had fun looking through your shelves. I hope you find something here you like. If not, let me know and I'll try again.
1. First Day: I noticed that you read a lot of different genres so I'm not sure there are truly "out of your comfort zone" but they are all things you haven't read before:
Dragon Actually - silly, smutty dragon shifter romance. Laugh out loud funny in places.
The Iron Duke - Angsty steampunk romance. Meljean Brook has built an amazing world in these novels.

2. Second Day: Heartless - I see that you rated the other books in this series highly. I loved this one too. Lots of Lord Akeldama! Or Mine Till Midnight - you've rated other Lisa Kleypas books highly as well. I really enjoyed the whole Hathaway series.

3. Third Day: Either of these would keep you busy for a whole day! Drums of Autumn or The Pillars of the Earth

4. Goodbye Rabbit! The Girl Who Chased the Moon is set in the Southern US but I think Sarah Addison Allen's books can be enjoyed by anyone.

5. Welcome Dragon! 2 Hot covers coming up! I picked one from your TBR and the other I always seem to pick when the category is "hot cover". Covet or The Darkest Hour

6. Poor Cat: Thorment's book is coming so you know you'll want to be caught up! Lover Unleashed. Or I'm reading a Rachel Gibson book right now and it helps chase the winter "blahs" so go with: Tangled Up In You (Writer Friends, #3)

7. Pass the Luck Around Again I went with 2 because I have problems making a decision. One of the things I love about the PIFM challenge in finding new authors. Under Her Skin was recommended to me and I really enjoyed it and and I found that I loved Susan Mallery's voice and have picked up some of her other books as well.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - This was handed to me by a friend who said "The beginning is boring - just keep going and it gets great". I can't say it any better.

I spread myself a little thin challenge wise in January. This first book I'm planning to read anyway so I'm up for a buddy read on that one. The second one did catch my eye but I don't know if I could fit it in as a buddy read.
8. Spread the Love: Fate's Edge - I'm definitely up for reading this one. Loved the others in the series and looking forward to picking it back up.

Lantern Festival: This cover catches my eye every time I see it. Enemy Lover

Happy reading!

I put several on my TBR list that I don't think I'll get to this month but I requested And One Last Thing ..., Werewolf in the North Woods and Breathing Roomthe library. I'll let you know when I get them. Let me know which you would want to do as a buddy read.

Thanks for great and very early picks! I can't narrow down my picks. There are so many books that I've been putting off. I think I'll read at least one of:Hexed, The Lies of Locke Lamora, In the Time of the Butterflies. I've been putting off The Name of the Wind for years now because I was waiting for book #2. Now that book #3 seems to be in the horizon (2013!!!), I think I should get a move on. I'll push up the rest on my TBR.
I'll join the Nothing Ever Happens buddy read. For the buddy reads, I'm open to either Beast or Lord of Snow and Shadows or both. Let me know DG.
Thanks again for the great picks!

WELCOME THE NEW YEAR

Welcome to the New Year
1. The First Day: One for the Money or Who Loves You Best. The first is the first in probably one of the most favorite mystery series. I saw a lack of cozy mysteries so I though I'd give it a try. The second is a woman's fiction type book. You have some but the read dates tend to be few and spaced out.
2. Second Day: For the Roses or Bed of Roses. I didn't realize the similar titles when I picked these. You've read a lot of both of these authors and you seem to rate both very highly!
3. Third Day: The Fiery Cross or Coming Home. Both well over 1000 pages. One froma series you love, and the other a stand alone with high ratings!
During the New Year
4. Goodbye Rabbit: Suddenly or Eragon the first is a wonderful historical romance that takes place in England, the second a make believe world. Can't get much farther from home than that! ;)
5. Welcome Dragon: The Darkest Hour or Kiss of Midnight. The first has a cover featuring a sexy man followed by a story a man protecting his girl ;) The second a vampire story with some great steamy moments!
6. Poor Cat: To Kill a Mockingbird or Vampire Academy. Both on your to-read list since summer of 2010! The first probably one of the best books ever written, the second a great series that you need to read before the movies come out!
7. Pass the luck around: The Darkest Night or Cry No More. The first I just read this past month and loved it! The premise is really original, for being paranormal anyways! ;) The second is a great romantic suspense book I was recommended in October!
Celebrate the New Year
8. Spread the Love: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or Intrinsical. The first is a book I've been putting off forever, but I refuse to see the movie until I read it, the second a series I found by accident that I can't wait to read!
9. Lantern Festival: Playing with Fire or The Gargoyle. Another Gena Showalter book, but I noticed it on your list and read the description, and it sounds really interesting! The second has a gorgeous cover and I keep hearing wonderful things about the book, but I never have time to read it!

I've been through your lists and assume there is a reason you seem to have mostly YA on your list so I stayed in that general territory. Hope that works.
First Day--you don't seem to read much historical fiction so I recommend Revolution which is involves time travel and the French Revolution.
Second Day: From a well-rated series Rules of Attraction because you liked Perfect Chemistry.
Third Day: One of the longest books on your TBR is Nevermore
Goodbye Rabbit: Small town North Carolina The Girl Who Chased the Moon I like Sarah Addison Allen--this one has a teen main character
Welcome Dragon: From your TBR, which has mostly females on the covers, I chose Silence. From my TBR Please Ignore Vera Dietz--hot for a totally different reason...
Poor Cat: My Sister's Keeper this was the first Jodi Picoult book I read and it's still one of my favorite books of all time Way better than the movie.
Pass the Luck Around: My favorite recommendation from this year PIFM is The Adoration of Jenna Fox. Based on your reading lists, this is the one I would most recommend.
Spread the Love: From my TBR list: YA Testify or Death Comes to Pemberley
Lantern: From your TBR The Gathering

Thanks for the picks. I am super-excited to start Touch the Dark :D. I will also try and see if I can do A Game of Thrones.
I am also totally up for a buddy read with Murder at the Vicarage. Should I PM you to work out when to start?"
I'm glad you like your picks! Yes, please PM me when you are ready to start Murder at the Vicarage. I'm glad you are giving me the little push I needed to read that one as well!
Sue-

I would be happy to read either And One Last Thing... Or Werewolf in the North Woods with you. Let me know which one you get in first.

1. First Day:The Gargoyle I'm not sure if this will be out of your comfort level or not, but I saw a lot of PNR on your book lists and this book isn't really PNR. It's an awesome book though.
2. Second day:The Darkest Passion I love this series
3. Third day:Sam's Creed I bought the first on in this series and was kind of surprised by how big it was. haha
4.Goodbye Rabbit:On the Island Some of this book takes place in the states, but majority of it is on some island in the Pacific.
5.Welcome Dragon!:Darkness Dawns Awesome cover, awesome book

Welcome the New Year
1. First Day: was hard to pick out of your comfort zone but here goes I picked two venues that I hadn't found in your shelves - it didn't appear from your shelves that you read male authors so... 1st to Die is a series that I love by James Patterson or Angels and Demons I love this as well as the next 2 books in this series

Sorry for the delay. I fell asleep when I was looking at your Read shelf yesterday. Holy Huge Bookshelf Batman! You've read so many books across different genres. Wow! I've tried to recommend books from your bookshelf and some new recs as well. I hope you find something that you like. If not, I can re-pick. Please let me know.
Welcome the New Year
1. First Day:
1. A Monster Calls by by Patrick Ness - I noticed that you haven't read much YA. This is not your typical YA book, well actually it's more of a middle-grade. It's short but emotional. Plus, the DTB has amazing illustrations.
2. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde - I would say this genre is out of most everybody's comfort zone. It's set in alternate Victorian England. The book is full of quirks and incorporates Jane Eyre. It's a very enjoyable read.
2. Second Day:
1. The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings - You seem to rate David Eddings highly. Why don't you read this standalone fantasy?
2. Cry No More by Linda Howard - I've GOT to recommend this book. You've seemed to enjoy Howard too. This book is one of Howard's best, imo. It's an intense read and you can't help but feel with the main character.
3. Magic Gifts by Ilona Andrews - This is a short novella by Ilona Andrews as a Christmas gift that is free only for 2 weeks. Grab it from their website HERE .
3. Third Day:
1. Breathing Room Susan Elizabeth Phillips - Philips is one of my go-to contemporary authors. She writes good contemporaries. Breathing Room for the most part is really good. I went into the book with misgivings but she writes very well and at the end, I was satisfied with it.
2. The Dragonbone Chair - Another one of the longest book in your TBR. I haven't read it but from the comments, it seems to be very good.

During the New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!:
1. Untameable Rogue by Kelly Hunter - I believe this is the first category to be set in Singapore. It's very good and it can be read as a standalone.
2. Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman - In keeping with the theme and because I just finished reading it. It's part of a duology and man, it was awesome. It's a YA but a fantasy set in alternate China. The Chinese mythology incorporated into the book makes it more interesting.
5. Welcome, Dragon!:
1. Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh - This is one of my favorite PNR series. Nalini Singh writes books with great world building yet hot at the same time. Why don't you give the series another chance?
2. The Darkest Hour by Maya Banks - Look at the HOT bod on the cover! Need I say more?
6. Poor Cat:
1. A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire - One of my favorite UF series. The books keep getting better and better. You must give this another chance.
2. Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop - I picked the trilogy earlier this year and I finished it in 2 days. Thank God for the internet. And I lived up to the hype.
3. Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson - The best fantasy romance series. It's complete at 5 books, too. It has one of the best world building done ever.
7. Pass the Luck Around:
1. Yours Until Dawn by Teresa Medeiros - I was recommended this book by a friend. I picked it up earlier when I was in a romance mood and I gobbled it up. After I finished, I kept re-reading certain parts. *Sigh* it was very romantic.
2. How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper - A group of us read this earlier this year and I gotta tell you, it was damn good. The dialogue between the characters were witty and the chemistry between the leads was steaming off the page. I didn't expect to like the book but I did.

Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)
8. Spread The Love:
1. First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost - I have to read the #5 of the Night Huntress Series. But before that, I must read these two books as they seem to be continuous.
2. Rhapsody: Child of Blood by Elizabeth Haydon - I'm doing a group read at the RftCI group. You can join us if you're interested!
3. Nothing Ever Happens by Sue Brown - DG recommended this to me earlier today. This is going to be my first M/M. I hope I'll like it. It's a M/M group read for this month.
9. Lantern Festival:
I saw two books on your TBR that I'd like to start too - Warrior by Zoe Archer and Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara West.
Let me know if you'd like to buddy read any of them.

So, here are my picks for you, hope you like it!
1. First Day (Pick a book out of their comfort zone) : The Running Dream-This is a really interesting book and i personally enjoyed it very much. It's a little different from the books you've read so i figured this may be 'out of your comfort zone'.
2. Second Day (Choose a book from their favorite authors/genre or a book from one of their well-rated on-going series) : A Game of Thrones- This seems like quite an engaging book and i've also put in under my TBR. It should be the type of book you'll be interested in, if i'm not wrong.(:
3. Third Day (Pick a long book from their TBR that will occupy them on this day.)The Name of the Wind- 662 pages! It's a looong book!
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!(Recommend a book that is set in a different country than your pickee is from.):
SING TO THE DAWN-I read this book sometime in 2009 for a drama lesson and i found it to be really original and touching. It was definitely a refreshing and quick read!
5. Welcome, Dragon! (Pick a book with a HOT cover or an all-round yummy hot book.): Pleasure Unbound-It was difficult choosing a book for this, honestly. But nonetheless i do my best.
6. Poor Cat (Recommend a book from their TBR that has been neglected or a book that you think should be pushed up.): The Shadow of the Wind- I went through your TBR and found this! It's been neglected for almost 2years! LOL.
7. Pass the Luck Around: (Recommend a book (or two) you loved): My Best Friend's Girl and Goodnight, Beautiful- This two books are my personal favourites, recommended by my best friend. Hope you like it too.
Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)
8. Spread The Love: (Share the new books/series you are psyched to read in the New Year that your pickee hasn't read yet): Ready Player One- It seems like a nice book and has got high ratings so, i would love to read it!
9. Lantern Festival (Pick the books from your pickee's TBR that caught your eye.): How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire- I've been wanting to read series and this looks like a good start.

Welcome the New Year
1. First Day: (Help them welcome the New Year with a challenge!) You seem to like paranormal romance so I think I am going to go with a historical romance and say Never a Gentleman by Eileen Dreyer.
2. Second Day: (Daughters go back to their birth homes) Deadly Fear by Cynthia Eden. I am not a very big romantic suspense reader but I loved this series.
3. Third Day: (People will stay at home today) Sinful by Charlotte Featherstone. It’s not very long but it’s so distracting. Make sure you download the epilogue from the author’s site or you will be very disappointed in the ending.
During the New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: (Rabbits enjoy learning about other culture) . Devil of the Highlands by Lynsay Sands--Scotland
5. Welcome, Dragon!: (Dragons are powerful and HOT :P) Devil Without a Cause by Terri Garey. Just look at the pretty man on that cover.
6. Poor Cat: (Cat was left out of the zodiac because of rat's trick) The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa. She is simply amazing.
7. Pass the Luck Around: The Texan's Wager by Jodi Thomas. Carter is definitely a…unique hero.
Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)
8. Spread The Love: : In Bed with a Highlander by Maya Banks—I had this for a previous Buddy Read but never got around to reading it.

2.Favorit..."
Thanks a lot for the amazing picks! i'll be trying to read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares, Dangerous Secretsand Good Oil

I'm sorry I don't have your picks done yet - I amusually much more prompt than this. I will have your picks up as soon as I can tomorrow. I currently have a houseful of company who are all leaving tomorrow (after being here for the last 10 days!) as soon as I can get them to the airport (3 hours away). I finally just now (at 1:00 A.M.) had time to jump on here and look at the pairings. I can't stay here right now and work on them because I have to get some sleep because we are leaving in a couple more hours for the airport.
I promise I will do it as soon as I get back tomorrow! Thanks for your patience with me.

Thanks for the picks K.Ling! I'm gonna have to go with what my library has available this month, so I'm going to start with [book:How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire. If you have time to do a buddy read of it, that would be fun. I'll have to see what else I can get my hands on before the end of the month as so many of those sound really interesting.
Marissa,
--Welcome the New Year
1. First Day: As far as I can see you actually read a lot of everything and you have a lot of different genres on your TBR pile. So for beginning I think I'll recommend you some classics. Try Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
2. Second Day: Hm, perhaps you should continue Black Dagger Brotherhood series with Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward, you seem to like those. Also, you stopped reading Twilight Saga and you can pick that up again with Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
3. Third Day: I admit I didn't check all the pages but just went by my memory which ones are the longest. You have Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell sitting on your shelves and this one is quite a reading. I don't know how many pages does English version of Angelology by Danielle Trussoni have, but I have Slovenian one at home and it's... well heavy. (:
--During the New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: since you like historical fiction I'm recommending you The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunnant, set in Italy. You don't have it on your TBR I think, but I loved this one so much. And Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, set in Japan.
5. Welcome, Dragon!: Oh well, I really don't read much books that scream hotness alert, so I'm shooting blank here. Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning or as I can see you hadn't have your taste of Julie Garwood yet, so try The Gift, it's fairly steamy.
6. Poor Cat: Quickly, quickly read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, I'm probably the wrong person for recommending this since I didn't like it that much, but it's a quick read and a must read. And then there's The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold sitting on your pile for quite awhile. Try it.
7. Pass the Luck Around: Oh, you just have to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, everyone was recommending me this one for months and then I finally picked it up and my mind was blown. It's just that good. And something for your love of historical fiction: The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory, it's great.
--Celebrate The New Year [buddy reads]
8. Spread The Love: I'll be reading The Iron King by Julia Kagawa in the following month so you're welcome to join me! (:
9. Lantern Festival: Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia was the first one to catch me eye, it must be that beautiful cover. I have no idea though how could I get my hands on this book but I can try.
