Desperado (lethallovely) | 822 comments I debated about whether I should join the Jan 2012 PIFM. Just thinking about how much school/class work I'm going to be doing next year is enough to make me want to run off to Aruba & never come back. But I've never been very good at resisting temptation. So...

I'm in & a Snake.

message 145: by D.G. (last edited Jan 18, 2012 02:20PM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Hi Vi!

Among all my friends, you have the highest compatibility rating with me: 87%!! So I think you will be bound to find something below you like. :)

WELCOME THE NEW YEAR
1. First Day (Out of comfort zone):
Even though you seem to read many genres, you don't seem to have many classics or m/m in your shelves.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - Here I recommend one of my absolute favorites, a classic dystopia written in the 50s which is just timeless.
One of Those Days by Zathyn Priest - Just in case you are open to try some m/m romance, here's a short freebie which is very funny and touching at the same time. It's graphic, though.

2. Second Day (Favorite well-rated on-going series): Next books in two very good series that we both enjoy. :) Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward OR Hexed by Kevin Hearne

3. Third Day (Long Book from TBR): Two different books but very good in their own way:
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (850 pgs) - A mix of Time Travel, Historical Fiction and like a million other genres, this is a must read. The beginning is very slow and I sort of hated Claire during most of it but she makes up for her behavior in the rest of the series.
The Host by Stephenie Meyer (619 pgs) - I know you didn't like the Twilight series (me neither) but this is a very different book and sooo good! I wanted to re-read it the moment I finished it.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury One of Those Days by Zathyn Priest Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #5) by J.R. Ward Hexed (Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer

DURING THE NEW YEAR
4. Goodbye, Rabbit! (Book set in different country than pickee):

In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez - I figured I should recommend you a book set in my country. Based on real historical events with 3 very strong women as main characters.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - One of my favorite books of this year! If you can please try it in audio!

5. Welcome, Dragon! (HOT cover/Hot Book):
Wicked Burn by Beth Kery - Very hot but also have a very good plot
Nothing Ever Happens by Sue Brown - This is another M/M romance which a bunch of us will be buddy reading this month. Let me know if you want to join us!

6. Poor Cat (Neglected Book from TBR):
Don't be concerned these books won't live up to the hype. They are both very gooood, specially the first one (which was my favorite book of 2010 and one I'm planning to re-read soon.)
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss OR The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

7. Pass the Luck Around (recommended to me):
Both are fantasy, recommended recently by friends. Loved them both and can't wait to read the next in the series. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch OR The Battle Sylph by L.J. McDonald

In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Wicked Burn by Beth Kery Nothing Ever Happens by Sue Brown The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch The Battle Sylph (Sylph, #1) by L.J. McDonald

CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR (BUDDY READS)
8. Spread The Love (books/series I'm psyched to read in the New Year):

I've heard great things about both of these books and can't wait to read them.
Angelfall by Susan Ee OR Beast by Judith Ivory

9. Lantern Festival (books from your TBR that caught my eye):
I've heard recently of both of these books and took it as a sign when I saw you had them on your shelves. Lord of Snow and Shadows by Sarah Ash OR Heart Of Stone by C.E. Murphy

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee Beast by Judith Ivory Lord of Snow and Shadows (Tears of Artamon, #1) by Sarah Ash Heart Of Stone (Negotiator Trilogy, #1) by C.E. Murphy

Just let me know if you are interested in doing any of the buddy reads.

message 146: by Christine (new)

Christine | 955 comments Hi Suzanne.

I’ve got your picks ready. I just noticed that they are very heavy in urban fantasy and paranormal romance, so if you want me to take another shot at it and pick some different genres, just let me know. There’s plenty to pick from on your TBR shelf!

1. First Day: This ‘comfort zone’ category is always hard for me. I’m going to recommend The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson or Nightlife by Rob Thurman, just because they are so different from other UF series I’ve read and I really like them both.

2. Second Day: You’ve given great ratings to J.D. Robb and Jim Butcher, so how about continuing with Conspiracy in Death or Small Favor? (I just started Small Favor myself last night!). I also noticed that you’ve started one of my absolute favorite series, so you could continue with Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs.

3. Third Day: At 1276 pages, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is certainly long.

The Scent of Shadows (Signs of the Zodiac, #1) by Vicki Pettersson Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1) by Rob Thurman Conspiracy in Death (In Death, #8) by J.D. Robb Small Favor (The Dresden Files, #10) by Jim Butcher Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

During the New Year

4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: In Bed with a Highlander by Maya Banks. I did a buddy read of this one in November and really enjoyed it.

5. Welcome, Dragon!:
You’ve read the first book from my favorite yummy hot series, so how about trying book 2, Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh
Or since it is the Year of the Dragon, how about Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken (I actually haven’t read this one myself, but plan to get to it sometime in January.)

6. Poor Cat:
I’m going to recommend some of my favorites that you haven’t gotten to yet:
Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews (This first book starts out slowly but about 60 or so pages in, it really takes off.)
Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland
Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks
(The last two are good choices if you like mysteries and/or police procedurals.)

7. Pass the Luck Around:
Two books that were recommended by friends and that have become series that I just love are Hammered by Kevin Hearne and Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan.

In Bed with a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy, #1) by Maya Banks Visions of Heat (Psy-Changeling, #2) by Nalini Singh Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks Hammered (Iron Druid Chronicles, #3) by Kevin Hearne Queen of Shadows (Shadow World, #1) by Dianne Sylvan

Celebrate The New Year (Buddy Reads)

8. Spread The Love: Two series that I’m excited to start in January, and that I see you have in your TBR shelf also, are Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep and First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones.

9. Lantern Festival: I’ve been meaning to explore some historical romance so how about Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt?
Or a series that I’ve heard so much about, but haven’t gotten around to myself:
A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole (A few folks have recommended to me to skip the prequel The Warlord Wants Forever)

I’m up for buddy reads of any of the four I’ve recommended.

Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones Wicked Intentions (Maiden Lane, #1) by Elizabeth Hoyt A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole

message 147: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 822 comments Happy Holidays, Cathy (US)! I must say, it was a little difficult picking for you. You've rated 4 & 5 stars to almost every (234) books we have read that are in common. It made it a little hard for me to figure out which genre/author you enjoyed more or if you liked them all. Anyway, here are my picks for you. Excluding #2, every book I'm rec'ing is on your TBR shelf. I hope that you'll find something you're interested in reading. ^_^

Welcome the New Year

1. First Day: Sleeping with Strangers by Eric Jerome Dickey~The only genre you seem to have read little of is Fiction. Therefore, I'm recommending one of my favorite Urban Fiction novels to you.

2. 2nd Day: Immortal Rider by Larissa Ione

3. 3rd Day: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger~This book made me cry buckets.

During the New Year

4. Goodbye, Rabbit: The Prize by Julie Garwood~Garwood is one my absolute favorite old school romance authors. How many times have I re-read her historicals? Enough that almost all of them are falling apart. ^_^

5. Welcome, Dragon: Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison~Don't let the cheesy cover fool you-this book is HOT.

6. Poor Cat: Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane

7. Pass the Luck Around: On the Edge by Ilona Andrews~A caveat: I am utterly & unashamedly in love with the incredible duo, Ilona Andrews. I would happily have their babies if only they'd give me a chance! Our love affair (that no one understands & everyone believes I'm delusional because of) started with this book that a friend rec'd to me last year.

Celebrate the New Year

8. Spread the Love: Lothaire by Kresley Cole

9. Lantern Festival: A Lady's Lesson in Scandal by Meredith Duran

Sleeping with Strangers (Gideon Series #1) by Eric Jerome Dickey Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #2) by Larissa Ione The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger The Prize by Julie Garwood Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #12) by Kresley Cole A Lady's Lesson in Scandal by Meredith Duran

message 148: by Penney (last edited Jan 09, 2012 01:36PM) (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Hi Cacophony! I was a little worried when I first delved into your shelves because it seemed as if you'd already read all the books I'd recommend to you. Thankfully, however, I found plenty more :) I'm not to good at rec'ing only one book per category so here's your extended list...

Welcome The New Year
1. First Day: You're like me and don't really have a defined comfort zone, so here are a few you might not choose on your own... Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas, I think this book would be out of everyone's comfort zone, but it's well worth the read. It was a 5-star for me. Also just outside the romance genre is The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan. Although there is a romance in the story, this is definitely not PNR. What it is is a very entertaining read.
Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

2. Second Day: I'm a huge Ilona Andrews fan, so since you enjoyed the Magic Bites series, try some of their other work. Silent Blade and Silver Shark are two short stories that read like full length novels. You also have On the Edge on your tbr, it's the first of another great series.
Silent Blade (Kinsmen #1) by Ilona Andrews Silver Shark (Kinsmen #2) by Ilona Andrews On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews

3. Third Day: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, I try to recommend this for every PIFM and pretty much every chance I get. It's my all time fav!
Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

During The New Year
4. Goodbye, Rabbit!: Archangel isn't even in this realm so I guess it works for not set in your country :) If you're looking for something more reality based, my other all time favorite read is Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.
Archangel (Samaria, #1) by Sharon Shinn Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

5. Welcome, Dragon!: Dragon Down Under, Hot cover with a dragon to boot. A hot read from your tbr, Naked by Megan Hart. A hot read that's new to you, Midnight Man by Lisa Marie Rice. (I still think about the first sex scene in that book)
Dragon Down Under by Angela Castle Naked by Megan Hart Midnight Man (Midnight, #1) by Lisa Marie Rice

6. Poor Cat: You still have two of my favorite Judith McNaught books on your tbr, A Kingdom of Dreams and Once and Always. Get on it!
A Kingdom of Dreams (Westmoreland, #1) by Judith McNaught Once and Always (Sequels #1) by Judith McNaught

7. Pass the Luck Around: When Dee was my PIFM partner way back when, she recommended Faith & Fidelity, it was a great read and I try to pay it forward whenever I get the chance. Thanks Dee! First Grave on the Right was a book club pick and I also like to pass it on as well.
Faith & Fidelity (Faith, Love, & Devotion, #1) by Tere Michaels First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones

Celebrate The New Year
8. Spread the Love: January 19th, Fifty Shades Freed, 'nuf said!
Fifty Shades Freed (Fifty Shades, #3) by E.L. James
9. Lantern Festival: Two books I've been wanting to read, but haven't added to my tbr... Cut & Run and High Stakes. Maybe I should get on that.
Cut & Run (Cut & Run #1) by Abigail Roux High Stakes (Vegas Vampires, #1) by Erin McCarthy

Ok, I hope you find something on this list you'll want to read. It was certainly a pleasure playing in your shelves. Happy Reading!!

2. Second Day: Whispers in the Dark by Maya Banks. You rated the first 2 in the series very high! I am definitely adding these to my TBR!
3. Third Day: The Host by Stephanie Meyer. This is one of your longest books..619 pages.

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments hi Laura

Here are some picks for you, hopefully one of them works, if not, lemme know and i'll see what else I can do

Welcome the New Year

1. First Day
it was hard figuring out if you had a comfort zone because you didn't have a lot on your read shelves...so I figured a few...
From the classics - Agnes Grey - I have a love/hate relationship with the Bronte sisters and plan on listening to this one this month
The Name of the Star - I saw you read a lot of UF, but this apparently also has a horrow twist and you only had a few of those on your shelf
Nothing Ever Happens - this is probably wayyy out of your comfort zone, but we have been doing a m/m buddy read each month and this is going to be the book for January

2. Second Day
Looking at your read list, I saw you had quite a few Richelle Mead on your self, so how about either Bloodlines which is a spin-off of her VA series, or Succubus Blues which is the first book in her Georgina Kincaid series

You could also try Poison Study - the first in Maria Snyder's study series, since I saw you liked her Glass series or Black Ice since I saw you had previously read and liked anne stuart (this one is a contemp, not a historical however)

3. Third Day
I love long books, becuase I feel like I get to know the characters so well...so here are some long books for you...i've only read 1 of these, but the other 2 are on my to-read lists
A Clash of Kings
The Bronze Horseman (I just finished this up the other week and loved it and plan to read the second one in January)
Kushiel's Chosen

During the New Year

4. Goodbye Rabbit
I love find books set in different countries, 2 that I've read in the last year and really enjoyed were: Between Shades of Gray (Lithuania and Siberia during WW2) or The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Sweden)

5. Welcome Dragon
Too Hot To Touch (Rising Star Chef, #1) by Louisa Edwards or The Perfect Play (Play by Play, #1) by Jaci Burton - need I say any more...

6. Poor Cat
Sunshine - i've heard good things about this book, but haven't read it
Room - this was an interesting book, I actually listened to the audio which was narrated by a kid which was interesting

7. Pass the Luck Around
Two of my favorite books this year were recommended to me by a friend in another group, Beautiful Disaster and Letters From Home

Celebrate the New Year

8. Spread the Love
I have these 2 on the pile for January if you are interested in reading them with me - When She Woke (futuristic dystopia) or Daughter of Smoke and Bone (YA Fantasy)

9. Lantern Festival
Ohh lots of books on your shelf that i'm interested in, specifically, Sinful or Leviathan
