You know we'll keep mentioning him until you do. I've got American Gods on my list for next year unless by some freak of nature occurrence it goes on sale in Canada for Kindle. If you can't handle a long book you could go for Coraline or the one I really liked which was The Graveyard Book which are shorter and youth fiction oriented.

Thanks for the recommendation. It does look like its going to win the run-off vote. I'll keep it in mind, but I really don't think its going to happen this year.

Nyssa | 1569 comments I have completed the first series of my 2012 challenge and boy, was it a doozie!

Ghost Story was a mixed bag that ended on a very good (as in interesting) note.

I will definitely buy Cold Days come Jan. 2013.

Nyssa | 1569 comments I just finished reading and rating On Basilisk Station and I really enjoyed it, especially the last fee chapters.

Yeah, that's a good one. If my TBR list wasn't so long I'd maybe do a reread of that series.

I read the first 9 novels quite a few years ago, and I plan to finish the complete series this time around.

I just finished The Short Victorious War (Honor Harrington, #3) by David Weber last night and started Field of Dishonor (Honor Harrington, #4) by David Weber today. The first three were a bit foggy in the old memory banks, but this story I remember and I'm not looking forward to the emotional toll, nor the outcome for Honor.

LOL Nope. I abstained from the 2nd vote altogether as I wasn't interested in reading any of the books in the Run-Off.

As for June, if neither Persuasion nor The War of the Worlds wins, then I will abstain from June as well. I'd like to read Three Musketeers but not now.

message 117: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Three Musketeers might be a good option, but too lengthy for a book club selection in my opinion. I really enjoyed War of the Worlds when I read it last year. Persuasion would require a lot of, umm, persuasion to get me to read. I slogged through Pride and Prejudice last year and Austen is not my cup of tea. *ducks*

I agree that The Three Musketeers would be too long, unless we did like those who read the Iliad in January and dedicated a group discussion to the whole series.

As for Austin, I have yet to read or see any of her works. I really have no opinion, just curiosity.

Its alright Loosh, I accidentally left the screen door open and the wildlife came in to say hello...its safe here. :)

I read PnP last year because I thought it was about networks. :)

I actually read Austen because she was an author I figured I should read something from. This year it was Faulkner.

Nyssa | 1569 comments Just finished Worlds of Honor (Worlds of Honor, #2) by David Weber

Although it is the second anthology in the Honorverse collection, all of its stories take place early on, chronologically, including one of Honor's earliest assignments which foreshadows her ability for command, plus the early stages of the Mantacoran v Havonite war and its effect on other star nations.

It is a lot! 13 main novels with a 14th expected as #13 was supposed to be longer than it is. 4 sub-series novels (2 from one sub-series and 2 from another) and 5 anthologies.

I read the first 9 & 1/2 before burning out my first time around...and that was without reading any of the anthologies. The sub-series books start around or shortly after book 9.

message 125: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Just finished Flag in Exile (Honor Harrington, #5) by David Weber . I promised myself that I'd slow down while attempting to finish the series, this time, but that just doesn't seem to be the case. I really am sucked in and I hope I don't burn out like I did last time.

message 126: by Nyssa, Series Addict (last edited May 31, 2012 09:34PM) (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've just finished the last short story in More Than Honor (Worlds of Honor, #1) by David Weber , the first anthology written for the Honor Harrington Universe.

With that I've completed 6 out of 13 novels and 15 out of 21 short stories/novellas. Besides the remaining novels and short stories there are also 4 sub-series novels to go.

message 127: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments You're just burning through that series.

I don't think I could read a series that long in a given year. My unfocused brain would go crazy. :)

message 128: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Me three! Except for David Eddings Belgariad series. THAT I love.

message 129: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've always been one to read a series back to back. whenever possible. I think Harry Potter is the only one, recently, where I read the books as they came out. I thought about rereading the entire series before book 7, but didn't.

I did burn out the last time I tried to read this series (Honor Harrington), and that was just the novels. I made it about a quarter of the way through book 10 and just stopped cold. I thought about taking a break after book 5, but then changed my mind.

I know the next book is going to be pretty intense, so I may take a break after that one...I'll just have to wait and see how I feel at the end of it.

message 130: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I used to do that. I don't really do it anymore.... only cause there is SO much I want to read.

message 131: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Finished In Enemy Hands (Honor Harrington, #7) by David Weber ! Yay!

Will start book 8, Echoes of Honor, tomorrow.

message 132: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Cross posed from the Challenge Discussion Thread over at MR:

It took awhile, but I finally finished Echoes of Honor (Honor Harrington, #8) by David Weber which happens to also by my 30th book for the year.

I'm still really behind on my over-all goal, but I'm making good progress with this series in particular...hopefully, I won't have any more week long reads, though.

Its 770pgs did help me make it just shy of the half-way mark for number of pages read this year, so that is a plus!

message 133: by Nyssa, Series Addict (last edited Jul 08, 2012 02:49PM) (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments After far too many weeks, I've finally finished both Changer of Worlds and Ashes of Victory!

After I have read the 3 novelettes that are left, all of which are chronologically placed before book #10 - War of Honor, I will have completed all 5 of the anthologies.

message 136: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I am so far behind, it is rediculous! **sigh** Anyway, I finally, finally finished The Service of the Sword, the last anthology (chronologically, story line wise) in the Honorverse series.

I have 4 main novels and 4 sub-series novels left to go.

I may take a break and start The Lightning Thief instead... but I have not made up my mind as yet.

message 137: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Jul 26, 2012 06:27AM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I thought you were only about five or six books behind?

The book club was insane this month. I would have read The Lightning Thief if it had made it, but it was behind four other titles I really wanted to read as well. I'm just stunned that it's still posssible I won't want to read the winner.

I did put a hold on The Shadow of the Wind and Another Roadside Attraction at the libary so I'll be reading a couple of the nominees soon.

message 138: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Wow. You're doing good! I would have burned out by now.

message 139: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments @HiMS - I'm technically only 2 books behind in my main goal (after abandoning everything else, other than # of pages), but I really wanted to finish both The Honorverse and the Percy Jackson series this summer. With only 24 days left until school (and therefore work) starts, I don't see that happening.

@MrsJ - Thanks. :) I did burn out last time around, at this very spot in the main novels, actually. The difference, is that I hadn't read any of the anthologies at that time. I think its the anthologies that have helped to keep me in it this time around: Concentrating on different characters (especially many who are glossed over), offering prequels, backgrounds, sequels, prologues and/or epilogues to many of the events that happen throughout the main novels, as well as side stories, and/or showing the other side's point of view during specific situations. The 5 anthologies help to enrich the whole Honorverse experience, IMO.

message 140: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments That makes sense then. Pratchett is my only multi-title author for me so far this year. I know I couldn't read through that many series in a year.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I've just fallen in love with Ilona Andrews. I bought Magic Bites and now i'm waiting for books 2-5 to show up.

...so I'm drawing out reading the last 15 pages. I don't want it to end.

I've seen it, but I don't own it. I haven't purchased any new series this year, and have only downloaded one freebie from a new series.

I think my 2013 challenge will be to read "x" number of already owned ebooks (probably 10) before buying/downloading anything new.

Yeah. That never works for me, lol.

I'm just trying to limit my monthly purchases now...

Nyssa | 1569 comments Shhh don't tempt me. :) I have a birthday gift card burning a whole in my pocket, especially since I used my other gift card to buy my son's b-day gift (his birthday is 2 weeks after mine) and I used my birthday cash to buy the kids souvenirs from the Kennedy Space Center.

message 145: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Trying to overcome a multi-week long reading slum. Read two short stories today 101 Degrees Fahrenheit by Eva Gale & 101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire by Joleene Naylor . Both were disappointing.

101 Degrees Fahrenheit was erotic as promised but lacked...something.

101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire was just stupid ... I couldn't finish it.
