Nyssa | 1569 comments Read a cute story, today, while at school. Updated info.

Nyssa | 1569 comments Added Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane to the list for March. It was not my pick, but I will (try to) read it. I hope it isn't as scary as the movie promos made it out to be.

Gaah. I'll pass. *scary*

Nyssa | 1569 comments After yet another unintended hiatus, I finally finished my 11th book: Sex On Tuesdays by June Whyte

I'm ridiculously behind now....

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments As long as you're having fun!

message 56: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Thanks Mrs. J. I needed the reminder. :)

message 58: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments In keeping with Mrs. J's good advice, I've decided to lower my challenge a bit. I'm aiming for 85 books instead of 100, and although I'll still be in the MRBC, it will no longer be my primary goal.

message 59: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments 85 is still way more books than most read in a year. By a rather large multiple. :)

message 60: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Yep - my Goodreads challenge is only for 70 books.

message 61: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments 85 is still a bit much, for me, but I didn't want to lose that actual "challenge" part. :)

message 62: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Wait a second. There's winners and losers? :)

message 63: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Homeinmyshoes wrote: "Wait a second. There's winners and losers? :)"

Nope. Unless you call yourself one, lol.

I should probably lower my goal, too. Hubby has been complaining a lot about my reading lately. He feels I spend too much time reading.

I think I will take the remote from him soon. See how he likes that. ;-)

But I didn't finish any books last week and I've only finished 1-2 this week (and one was really short and the other I'd been reading forever).

So I think the 165 will become unreachable soon.

My cousins and I used to do this all the time growing up in the 80s.

message 71: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Hmm... Shutter Island, although interesting, was just not keeping my attention. I've had 3 DNF/Back Burner selections in as many months. That's not good, is it? On the bright side, I am enjoying Dead Beat...so I'm off to read some more! :)

message 72: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Black Rain was the last book club selection I've read. Nothing has been peaking my interest even enough to vote.

^This

message 74: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments I'm really enjoying The Remains of the Day at the moment which was a book club selection.

I can appreciate that this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea - an older butler reminiscing in a very precise and yet meandering way about important events in his career. However, for some reason I'm completely hooked.

Black Rain was compelling...and heart breaking. I'm still voting, but I'm happy I've removed the pressure from myself as far as having to read every selection.

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've just finished and thoroughly enjoyed Dead Beat (The Dresden Files, #7) by Jim Butcher !!

Next is the short story "Something Borrowed" from Side Jobs (the Dresden anthology), and then either The Princess Bride S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman or Proven Guilty (The Dresden Files, #8) by Jim Butcher .

message 77: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I LOVE LOVE LOVED The Princess Bride. WOnderful book!

message 78: by Nyssa, Series Addict (last edited Apr 02, 2012 02:33PM) (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I Love, love love the movie, but have never read the book. I am looking forward to it.

Dresden has pulled me back in, but I'm almost done with book 8.

message 79: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments I was going to have to buy The Princess Bride to read it. I would have to buy it under my American Kobo/Barnes & Noble accounts and I'd have to pay a full $10.

This book is quite old and I'd rather pay less.

I would really like to read the book because I love the movie, but my reading schedule is already planned until August and there's little incentive for me to pay full price for a book that was first published in 1973.

Are you serious?? That's insane! For an ebook?

My copy is DTB and I've had it for awhile. Could you get a paper copy or would that bother you?

message 81: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments If I got a paper copy, I would have to find it first. This is Australia where major book chains vanish and the remainder charge outrageously at the whim of greedy Australian publishers who like to do as little as possible and still secure ample revenue.

Actually these days, I try to avoid buying paperbacks from Australia because I'm on a one-man mission to topple the Australian publishers. I generally import now because the internet thwarted the evil Australian publishers in their parallel import bans.

If I stumble across a cheap second-hand or bargain bin copy I could be persuaded to part with a few dollars but that's about it.

message 82: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments The National Library of Australia has at least one copy that I can see. Is that not a possibility. I just read a bit of an excerpt. I might have to read this selection. I did love the movie, and I've been on a bit of a movies I've watched previously run.

message 83: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments National Library of Australia? Is that through Overdrive?

That library is in Australia's capital city - Canberra. I've applied for a library card but I'll have to wait until it's sent to me. Didn't know any Australian could join that library which is nice to know.

message 84: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I'll probably be reading a paper copy at some point borrowed from my trusty library.

message 85: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Just Finished White Night. Its not my favorite in the series, but I enjoyed it none the less.
On a side note: I am very happy I included all of my challenge links to the thread, as the the main one on our group page has been broken for weeks, if not months.

message 86: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've just read "Its My Birthday, too" and "Heorot" from Side Jobs.

Very interesting, oddly fun, but gross stories. The more I read, the more I love these characters.

message 87: by Nyssa, Series Addict (last edited Apr 14, 2012 06:27PM) (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Just Finished Dresden Files #10 - Small Favor and may be starting book #11 - Turn Coat, tonight! (After I finish the bonus stories) I'm actually pretty excited about it as I here there are some really interesting things coming up...especially in book #12 - Changes.

message 88: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Sounds like the series that never ends. :)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Caleb wrote: "Sounds like the series that never ends. :)"

Alansplace has been really good about updating series info on my Dresden Files thread over @ MobileRead. He discussed series length somewhere in the thread (I just can not find it at the moment). The current plan is for there to be 20 "Individual" books and then a series ending trilogy! 23 books in all. :)

message 90: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I just finished Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher a few minutes ago. That was just..wow! Crazy, scary, maddening goodness. I wish I didn't have to actually get some sleep before reading Aftermath and Ghost Story.

message 91: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Finished Side Jobs Stories From the Dresden Files (The Dresden Files anthology #1) by Jim Butcher as well! :) Only one more book left in the Dresden series, and then I'll be joining the others impatiently awaiting book #14 - Cold days

You and about everyone else I know, lol.

message 93: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I haven't even read the first one. Just me and my rock over here.

message 94: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Rock??

message 95: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Yeah - I haven't touched this series either. I usually dodge really long series, too much investment.

message 96: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've removed the MRBC from my 2012 challenge since I've only read one selection this year. I will continue, however, to add the winning books to the group bookshelf every month.

message 97: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments You should read Neverwhere if it wins or not. I think you'd like it. Unless, of course you've already read it.

message 98: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Neverwhere is an awesome book indeed. I think it was the first Gaiman I read. I've also seen the TV mini-series.

message 99: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments *sigh* I keep meaning to read Niel Gaiman...but I have no real interest.

message 100: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Oooh - I've got a couple of copies of some of his books. Even have a couple signed by the man himself.
