kvon | 56 comments A childrens book, probably a chapter book, that I read in the 1970s in elementary school. A girl is born and her parents give her about fifteen names after various aunts and other relatives, and she wants a shorter name but doesn't want to offend anyone. It may have had a cover with a girl riding a horse?

Diana Welsch | 530 comments I would check the literature portion ofthis list, though I didn't see anything that really fit well. There was a lot of sci-fi/fantasy stuff and you didn't mention that aspect, but maybe it was that sort of book?

kvon | 56 comments Warning, the above is a tv tropes link. (It's only polite.)

No, it wasn't sci-fi, more generic medieval. I doubt there was any magic either. Probably at the Beverly Cleary reading level.

L.E. Gill | 8 comments I wonder if it could possibly be The Ordinary Princess by M.M. Kaye? The age range is correct and the princess in question had a horrifically long name (which she shortened to Princess Amy when she runs away from home). It's more along the lines of a fairy tale, though I don't particularly remember a horse... the copy I have has the princess in a purple dress slipping over a stone wall.

kvon | 56 comments No, it definitely was before 1978; that one looks like it was from 1980. Thanks for trying, though.

Kate (katespofford) | 261 comments What about Pippi Longstocking? She had lots of names and a horse, and I could see her name being a product of her crazy family.

kvon | 56 comments I think bkl has it! I saw an alternate cover that looks familiar. Thanks very much. It looks like I can get it through interlibrary loan.
