IMO the first three books of the series are better than the last few. That said, I've really enjoyed the all of them.

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 98 comments I just finished The White Queen. It was pretty good! I wish, however there were less magic and witchcraft, but hey, it goes with the era. I digress, it is worth reading.

message 3762: by Haydn (new)

Haydn Morris Thanks happy, the book seems to get good reviews so hopefully it will live up to the star ratings.

Pure; The Silver Pigs: A Marcus Didius Falco Novel; Child of Vengeance

Jane | 3480 comments Started last night Roman Wall by Bryher. It's different from other things I've read, mostly character studies of various Romans and Helvetians fleeing from onslaught of Alemanni tribe in Helvetia and their reactions. 265 AD. Beautiful desriptions of the Swiss landscape.

Sorry the add book/author feature does not work, among many other things on GR

I'll be interested to see if you like The Silver Pigs, Lia. My library has that one, so I may give it a try myself.

That's great to see the polls and group reads inspiring reading lists. :)

Simona | 1453 comments they do, really.
it's a big help to discover new authors and books, that often are very good but for some motive don't seem appealing when we find them for ourselves (the cover? we scroll the wrong page..?).
and it's a bit like opening a gift each month. a very nice feeling.

Terri | 19576 comments When I first started doing the group reads polls - back in the day - I was amazed at how many books are in the genre that I never noticed.
I certainly have discovered hundreds of books since this group began. I shake my head at the thought of all these books I would never have read or noticed if I hadn't been involved in this group.

Polls and group reads are extremely helpfull in weeding out the undesirable books that disguised themself as Historical Fiction. It made wondering around the library's/bookstore's shelves reading back covers more enjoyable. :)

I was basically clueless about modern HF, before joining this group. I remember in my original meet & greet post that I mentioned James Clavell, and James A. Michener as my favorite HF authors(both of which I still love), but I had no idea what was really out there. Don't mean to sound all cheesy, but this group has opened so many doors for me. It's the main reason I'm here on GR.

Hi, C.P., I just finished The Final Sacrament a few days ago. If you're interviewing Mr. Forrester/Mortimer, please ask him why Clarenceux didn't follow Alice all the way. (You'll know what this means by the end of the book.) It's driving me crazy!

Yes, I do. I've read The Songs of the Kings by Barry Unsworth The Songs of the Kings and Morality Play by Barry Unsworth Morality Play and liked them both. This one's interesting; I've never read anything on the Norman Kingdom of Sicily before.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 564 comments Sherry wrote: "If you're interviewing Mr. Forrester/Mortimer, please ask him why Clarenceux didn't follow Alice all the way."

I did finish it—and on the whole I liked it, despite having more reservations than with books 1 and 2. I think I have an answer for you, although I have to be careful how to phrase it to avoid spoilers.

Clarenceux expected Alice to be found. In fact, he was counting on it. He wanted to avoid being found himself. But more fundamentally, any other outcome would not have conferred the finality promised in the title....

I actually found the ending very satisfying. It was the fate of Sarah Cowie that made me gag.

That it'd be great thanks Dawn. This is my first iggulden book, and my first on that era. I'm afraid I may be a bit behind, just trying to keep up with who is who. So don't fear Andy you will still probably finish before me! :)

Marilee (hatchling) | 77 comments As usual, I've bitten off more than I can chew, especially for this holiday time of the year. I have 3 books going, each quite different. One, The Goldfinch, is recorded so I'm listening on my iPod The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt , Another One Summer America, 1927 by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson's One Summer is a social history of the year 1927 I've downloaded to my Kindle and my third book is a thriller, White Fire White Fire (Pendergast, #13) by Douglas Preston is an actual book from the library.

I do this… because I like having more than one book going at a time to suit my mood and circumstance. But it's feeling kind of foolish right now. I'm not a fast reader and the recorded book is a really long one. At least each is quite different from the others, so there's no confusion.

I'll be looking for your thoughts on this one, Jane. I have my eye on it.

Would love to see what you think of it in the Norman thread too, https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... if you would like to share there as there are not many around set where that one is set.
(other than the Jack Ludlow series Mercenaries: 1)
