I think Ciaran Hinds was too Celtic-looking as Caesar; of course Ciaran Hinds IS Irish.

Still crawling through Empress, but I finished The Curse of the Pharaohs. Lion in the Valley and Eugene Onegin are calling, though. I don't hold out much hope for Empress Wu.Also Sworn Sword. I have four other authors to chat with before Aitcheson, though, so I will be a bit behind the curve on that one.
Oh gosh, I remember years and years ago when I was a teenager and in the hospital, my mom sat there and dutifully read me [as she put it] Eugene One-Gin. At least she read me the whole thing, mispronouncing the guy's name or not. :)
Sounds like a song and dance act, doesn't it? You-gene One-gin. ;-)I abandoned Empress. Too many books on the TBR to keep slogging on one that is not drawing me in. It's reasonably well written, others may like it; I just didn't, when all was said and done.
Right, there're no Book Police to keep you reading a slog. :) Life's too short. So you wooed the Empress without breaking your head, eh? :)
I just received a print copy of The Pet Hawk of the House of Abbas. For some reason, it looks so much more approachable than the e-book. Just FYI.

Started
Goatsong: A Novel of Ancient Athens this evening. Only read several pp. so far but am chuckling.
I am reading Total War Rome: Destroy Carthage and am so boooored... the games are a better investment of my time ;) I downloaded Total War: Rome II and sadly I'd rather play it than read.
A hugely popular series, Vanessa. Voyager I am sure many members will be hoping you enjoy it as much as they did.
Vanessa wrote: "I am reading Voyager by Diana Gabaldon"This is still my favourite book of the series.

Mine too. I enjoyed them all, but Voyager was the best.
I really enjoyed Eagle of the Twelfth Marina. The best of the series, and the rest aren't bad either.
Agreed. The 4th book Rome: The Art of War is yet another departure for the author. She's one of my favourites. I think I'd read anything she writes.
Master Of War: The Blooding by David GilmanCould you please add a link to the book in future William?? We would appreciate it.
Right now, Poison, Your Grace, which is a mystery based in Edward VI's court involving Simon Maldon, a young apothecary's assistant investigating the death of a nobleman by poison. I guess you could call it a cozy.
I went to the library today and picked up
and
. I have a few books to finish up first, but I hope to start them asap.
Oh please let us know how you get on with them. We have discussed the Gemmell one in the Troy thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... Iggulden's, gets discussed a lot in both the Conn Iggulden discussion thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and the Asia (ie Mongols) thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
PLenty of fans of both authors and series' around these parts. :)
I'm half way through Blood Eye. Great fun so far. Though I feel I should have started with Cornwell's Saxons series, knowing that I have the first three books on my shelf. Chronologically which one would happen first between the two series? Oh, and I've just ordered from Amazon The Master of Verona, The Rosetta Key, Royal Flash, and Company Of Liars.
Can't get over this disease. Compulsive Book Buying Disorder I think it's called. It's like, for every book I read I buy another 4. And I don't read more than one book at a time. Need help =P
I know what you're feeling: I ordered several from Powell's for Christmas gifts, and two for myself:
The Sower of the Seeds of Dreamsand
Paths of Exile
This is just a suggestion, and I don't always follow it myself:If someone's going to put a book cover, put the link next to it like I've just done. I'm not sure how many of those gadgets people have let you hover over the cover and see what the title is.
Lol. Now I'm singing in my head "Sowing The Seeds of Love" by Tears for Fears. I think I'm gonna listen to that album in this last hour of work. :)

I try to do that most of the time, but alas, it takes extra clicks and most of us are too lazy sometimes. :)
Well then, maybe if just one, a link would be preferable? Another group I'm on insists we all put both each time. I agree with you, it IS kind of a pain, but...
Just finished Jo Nesbo's latest opus Police and am now reading Shadow of the Alchemist: A Medieval Noir. Different genres but I like to mix it up
Frankenstein- going to see both filmed versions of the National Theatre's production starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Millar in a couple of weeks, so wanted to refamiliarise myself with the book, which I read when I was in my teens.
Seriously though, I am really looking forward to seeing the National Theatre productions, and I am really enjoying reading Frankenstein again. :) More than I did when I was a teen.
