My copy in on Kindle...you don't get the full impact of a cover on Kindle. :)

True and a pity, but you can enjoy them online, or close-up on Amazon, at least...

This is a great book, one of my favourite ancient texts and Rex Warners tranlation really does it justice, or at least I thought it did over 30 years ago when I read it. I'm pretty sure the translation will have stood the test of time just as the original text has. If Heroditus is the Father of history, then Thucydides is the Father of military history.

One of my favourite books ever also. Apparently, to sticklers for the rules, it has some inaccuracies, but I don't think those inaccuracies affected the telling of a story that needed to be told and remembered.

message 1113: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have just finished Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut and Under Enemy Colors (Charles Hayden, #1) by Sean Thomas Russell . I highly recommend the latter.

I have started Murder at Medicine Lodge A Tay-Bodal Mystery by Mardi Oakley Medawar , Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs, #1) by Jacqueline Winspear and In the Garden of Beasts Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson .

I lovedIn the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin Very good book.

message 1116: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I think I'm about 80 pages into In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin and I think it's a great read as well, very interesting. I'm very curious about this time in German history and while I don't have a big interest in the American politics it has been fascinating nonetheless.

message 1117: by Helena (new)

Helena Schrader I'm into the 13th Century at the moment, as part of the "research" for my current novel. I like to read the competition. I just finished "Relics" Relics by John J. Desjarlais Relics, which I enjoyed because of the unlikely hero, a very naive young knight. I've now started, Stallion at Sunrise. The English cover is terrible (I happen to have a German edition), making it look like trash, when, in fact, it is very solid historical fiction. The author, Martyn Whittock, is a scholar of medieval history teaching in the U.K.

Tim Hodkinson (timhodkinson) | 577 comments I just finished this: The Memory of Scent .
The Memory of Scent by Lisa Burkitt
I feel like I've broadened my mind a bit by reading a book that was Historical fiction, was about the world of 19th century art instead of knights and battles, and still wasn't a romance. Review on my blog:

Now back to 1356. 1356 (The Grail Quest, #4) by Bernard Cornwell

message 1121: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) It might be a little bit amazing that I only have 4 books on the go right now. :)

I'm still reading The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens The Pickwick Papers and have been for about 2 months now.
I got Wolf Hall (Wolf Hall, #1) by Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall back from the library but it's so poopular that I only get it for 2 weeks so I doubt I'll finish it during this loan either.
I'm listening to Anarchy And Old Dogs (Dr. Siri Paiboun, #4) by Colin Cotterill Anarchy And Old Dogs which is just as funny as the first book.
And I just started Iron Curtain The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1945-1956 by Anne Applebaum Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1945-1956. I've managed to read the introduction and a further 16 pages and I'm already in love with this book.

I understand is is not HF, but I just finished Nelson DeMille's latest thriller

The Panther (John Corey, #6) by Nelson DeMille

Set about three yrs after the bombing the USS Cole in Yemen.

I found it a fun entertaining read. Full of double and triple crosses. If you like DeMille, you'll like this. If you don't your probably won't.

The books are better, IMHO

message 1129: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Maybe I'll give them a try then. The TV show didn't inspire an immediate need to go find the book but I like the era and it's pretty unusual to find one set in Australia.

I love them. The character of Phryne is wonderful. And so are all the supporting characters. They don't need to be read in order as each novel is self contained and the references backwards are minimal. My favorites are Unnatural Habits, The Castlemaine Murders, Death Before Wicket, and Death By Water. I've read all of them (they're going on my read list as I reread).

message 1134: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) The library has quite a few so I shall add book 6 to my TBR (because it comes on CD) and give it a try next year.
