I've had Pope Joan in the queue on my kindle for over a year now. I just can't get around to it either.

Ah. Don't know if I'll be doing that... I picked this up on a whim because another group of mine is reading it. Or they were supposed to, so far only me and one other girl is reading it! Hmm. Never read any of the discworld series and never really had any interest either. I just like Neil Gaiman.

Killing me Allie...Terry Pratchett is my number one author favourite :D

That's because you have really good taste in books :P
I'm with you Kimber!

Allie, maybe in a later time you could read a different book by Pratchett and you could like it: sometimes it's just the wrong time to try :)

message 6809: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Thank you, Eileen. A review in the Christian Science Monitor weekly news magazine suggested this one to me.
Reading the title and surname of the author, I wouldn't be surprised if she chose the personal name for her hero based on her own surname. :)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I have Orhan's Inheritance on my TBR, are you enjoying it Jane?

I'm also just starting my first Pratchett discworld 1, I might be with you there Allie? Mr Ace adores his books, many a time he has read "funny" passages out to me but when I stare blankly at him he goes back to his reading :/

message 6812: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I would like to point out that the first Discworld book isn't the best one, I'd try another if you don't like it. Maybe Guards! Guards! or Equal Rites, both are much better than the Rincewind books.

message 6814: by Teanka (new)

Teanka | 54 comments I'm about 1/3 into our next month's book, A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening, and enjoy it so far. It's written in first person perspective.

Completely agree. I started with the Guards series and it continues to be my favourite. If I hadn't read several of those before I went back and read the first two in the series I might not have continued. There are over 40 Discworld books and the first two were the FIRST TWO...before the author found his voice and his style. I'm not a huge Rincewind fan to this day but I do love The Luggage.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I just started The Walls of Troy by Cherry Gregory.
David Bishop's WHO KILLED GARSON TALMADGE I finished yesterday. For a no good reason the b/a will not work on the title.??

That's exactly the book I was going to suggest.
But I understand that each one of us has a different idea of humour, what I find to be funny can be indifferent for others or worse offensive.
Luckily there's a book for everyone out there :)

message 6821: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Thank you Dawn, Kimber and Simona. I'm reading it as a buddy read (which I am Leading), so I will see it through, then move on to Guards! Guards! Appreciate the feedback..

Maybe someday I'll try this one. Years ago I tried one Discworld [I don't remember which one] and thought it was dumb.

If you've never read Moore but are in the mood for something not very serious check out the two books he has that are Shakespeare related: Fool and The Serpent of Venice based on King Lear and The Merchant of Venice.

Diego (gambitox) | 71 comments Well, my random pick algorithm lead me to Foucault's Pendulum Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco by Umberto Eco.

I guess this is a book I should better read in Spanish, but I found an English translation. 20 pages and my brain is already burning. Umberto's Baudolino is one of my favorite books, but I've read that Focault's is like one of the most difficult to understand. Hope I can make it.

I have it sitting on my Kindle but it's surrounded by 104 other books I haven't gotten around to yet and I add to that every other day. I'm hopeless. Finished Secondhand Souls and moving on to a psychological thriller Black Chalk Black Chalk by Christopher J. Yates

Eileen Stephenson | 2 comments I am reading Venus in Winter by Gillian Bagwell by Gillian Bagwell, which is about Bess Hardwicke who eventually (although not in this book which covers the first half of her life) became the gaoler of Mary, Queen of Scots for Elizabeth I. Based on the title, I expected something a little more romantic, but there isn't much of that in it. The author seems to have done an excellent job of researching what was going on during that period - I really enjoy getting a "street-level" view of history, rather than just the big picture.

message 6845: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) That book has jumped up my tbr list as I am currently reading a biography of her granddaughter, Arbella Stuart.

Allison | 1704 comments 40% into Henry IV: The Righteous King Henry IV The Righteous King by Ian Mortimer and I'm really liking it. It's actually very readable, you forget it's NF.

Also started The Good Girl by Mary Kubica Not only does every chapter switch characters POV but time periods too. Ugh.
