Gretchen (eab2012) Finished A Traitor's Tears (Ursula Blanchard #12) by Fiona Buckley - glad to be done with that series. Ugh
Needed to travel outside of Europe for a while Shanghai Girls (Shanghai Girls #1) by Lisa See
And last but not least Catherine the Great Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnon Rawlings. It's been years since I read the book, but I just watched the movie which is probably better than the book. I hope all of you who get Turner Classic Movies are taking advantage of 31 Days of Oscar which will end March 2. All of the movies being shown are Oscar winners or nominations in some category. THE YEARLING has more cry power than BAMBI or MADAM X. CASABLANCA and GASLIGHT will air tonight for the Ingrid Bergman fans.

Started Carthage Must Be Destroyed by Alan Wilkins Carthage Must Be Destroyed: The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Civilization this evening.

Diane (lemonsky) I just started Medicus. I'm only 20 pages into it, but I like Ruso already. I have two more books in the series - Terra Incognita: A Novel of the Roman Empire and Caveat Emptor: A Novel of the Roman Empire. I'm really surprised I never heard of this series until I came across it here on Goodreads.

GR has a way of doing that, my TBR list has exploded since I've found A&M and a couple of other groups! - I also really like the Medicus series.

Same here, I use to have trouble finding the next thing to read, now there is too much that I want to read.

message 6158: by Diane (new)

Diane (lemonsky) Well, I'm enjoying Medicus to the point where I'm sorry to put it down. I haven't had that happen in a while. I preordered the paperback of Tabula Rasa: A Crime Novel of the Roman Empire. And, yes, my TBR list has gotten very large. I really need to work on it!

Have the same problem. I have so many going and so many I wanna read. I need to finish like 15 books this month just to keep it together.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I finished Avalon by Any Seton and am starting
nBy the SwordChristian Kachel. I stand by my lonesome in being disappointed in AVALON. I liked the first half, but not so much the latter half. Still, it was good reading

message 6167: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I am to page 18 and find the book witty and provacative. Earlier today I checked the reviews and all were positive. At the time I moved this book to my currently reading shelf I rated the book I had just finished. I mistakenly rated both books. Thank you for catching my error, Terri. For me, that is a coherent explanation! lol I hope my error is not showing up at some other place. If so, let me know. Warning, I am reading BY THE SWORD through email on tablet. Ergo, I am using Nook for email, notices, reviews and everything else.

message 6168: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I thought it odd. I had just seen your post saying you were starting it. Then suddenly you rated it 3 stars!~ LOL! I thought gee, quick reader. ;)

Terri | 19576 comments Damn, what is wrong with the rest of the world.
They are Budgerigars!

(they are native to Australia, so I may be a little precious about the name). :)

message 6174: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Feb 11, 2015 03:08PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Umm Terri.... there are both budgerigars AND parakeets. Two different species. Calling a parakeet a budgerigar is a little like calling a cockatoo a budgerigar. All parrots, but different gens.

Parakeets are of South American origin, from memory.

message 6175: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Okay. Just did a little research. Budgies are parakeets... as are rosellas. Parakeet is the gens.

message 6176: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't want to open up this can of bird seed...:)

What they are calling a Parakeet is a Budgerigar.
Parakeet is only a term. Their genus is Melopsittacus

message 6177: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments All I care about is that they sh!t not on me or mine. Little amonia vessels the lot :-P

message 6178: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments haha. I'm with you there! our Budgie likes to run around on my shirtless husbands chest tapping on his iPad and sending garbled messages on his Twitter, all while soiling himself like some sort of little purple faeces machine! (and I mean the Budgie, not the hubby)

message 6179: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

As mentioned its very good, and they get better.

Harry pins a warning sign to his front door saying, ‘Beware of the budgie’. A passer-by sees this and says, ‘Excuse me, but I didn’t know budgies could be dangerous.’ ‘They’re not,’ says John. ‘But this one can whistle for the Rottweiler.’

:D

message 6182: by Diane (new)

Diane (lemonsky) I finished Medicus and loved it! I'll try to get my review up on Friday or Saturday. Things are a little crazy here right now. I started reading A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome in an effort to get a better understanding of the period. I know this covers Rome, but there should be some similarities. On a non-historical side, I'm reading One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by Agatha Christie.

Diane (lemonsky) I'm about halfway through Terra Incognita: A Novel of the Roman Empire, and I'm enjoying it as much as I did Medicus. I like the relationship between Ruso and Tilla.

Histolicious Histolicious I finished The Witch of Napoli by Michael Schmicker enjoyed it.

Started The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki yesterday and I´m still quite unsteady about this one. Do I like it ... or not. I always want to read a book about Elisabeth, but I dont know if I like this one :D

I had an arc of The Accidental Empress. I felt rather lukewarm after I finished. After further research into the life of Empress Elisabeth, I was unimpressed with the novel. Pataki really skipped over large chunks of Elisabeth's early life with Franz and completely left out people who played important roles in the couple's marriage.

message 6195: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Pengelly | 51 comments Just finished reading Saturnalia. I love this series and the wicked English humor which is probably not at all Roman-like. I believe the hero Falco is based on a true historical character, so it hopefully cuts the criteria. I find this series a light relief after the darma and intensity of the Colleen McCulloch Rome series which is however my very favorite.

message 6196: by Diane (new)

Diane (lemonsky) I finished Terra Incognita: A Novel of the Roman Empire - which I really enjoyed - and have started on The Corpse Reader by Antonio Garrido. Despite the title, it's not a horror novel. It's about Ci Song, considered to be the founder of CSI-style forensic investigation. It's set in 13th century China.

message 6197: by Histolicious (new)

Histolicious Histolicious @Gretchen.
I´ve read 20% of it now, and I am still not hooked. I´m not the greatest Sisi-Fan on earth (honesty, I just dont like her) and this book is just ... meh ... I think I take a break.

I read the extract of By the Sword (Spoils of Olympus, #1) by Christian Kachel this evening and damn, this was impressive. I went to amazon to buy that book ... turns out ... I already own it :D Best Sunday this year so far.

How'd that happen? Did you get it while it was a freebie or something?

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments Attempted The Bathory Legend but couldn't continue it beyond the first few chapters. Might have been my mood but the translation just seemed...horrible. Campy, even.
Read Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution Madame Tussaud A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran instead and enjoyed it very much considering I normally hate reading about 'The Terror'. Moved on to Geoffrey Hardgrave's The Painter of Florence The Painter of Florence by Geoffrey Hargrave .
