Ashley (readerandwriter) I finally finished "Nineteen Minutes" and I am now reading "The Family Heart: A Memoir of When Our Son Came Out" by Robb Foreman Dew.

message 103: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I recently finished Mark Haddon's A Spot of Bother...which I found to be excellent, though not as profound as his debut novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Since I have been on somewhat of a 'contemporary reading run', I thought I should take a breather in the new year and read a few classics. I feel this should help while away the winter months.

I am currently reading Little Women by Louisa May Alcott in its complete and unabridged form. So far, it has been just as wonderful of a read as I remember when I was a young girl. However, the version I am devouring is a vast improvement on the Great Illustrated Classics copy I remember consuming as a child. :-)

My next ups are If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino and The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck (notice a theme?).

message 104: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I got two new books. I got the first two books of the Left Behind Series. Speaking of, I started a group on here specifically to discuss the left behind series. So if anyone wants to join please feel free.

Mandy So I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, about halfway through and it's just not as good as I expected, it seems to be really slow going. I read and loved The Kite Runner so maybe my expectations were too high. I've heard good reviews about this so maybe it will turn in the second half of the book.

message 106: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I wandered the bookstore tonight and ended up buying 5 new books. I'm getting ready to snuggle under the covers and read Final Exits: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die by Michael Largo. Should be a fun read.

message 107: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) Wow Ashley, you are going to be reading for a loooong loooong time. The original Left Behind Series is like 12 books.... i think. I read them all back when they first came out. I couldnt wait until the next new hardcover hit the shelves.... I bought the first book of the prequel series, Before They Were Left Behind, but i just couldnt get into the whole backstory so i gave up and called it quits. The movies do not do the books justice at all!!

message 108: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 42 comments I am just finishing "The Glass Castle" and want to start "The Thirteenth Tale" next.

message 109: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (target) | 14 comments Currently reading An Inconvenient Book by Glenn Beck. The only non-fiction book I've ever come across that I actually enjoy reading.

message 110: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Mandy ~ My friend just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns and she loved it. But she did say it started off slowly and it took her a little while to get into it. I've added it to my to-read list, I'd be interested to see what you think once you've finished.

message 111: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I started Gone Baby Gone by Dennis Lehane today. I have Eats, Shoots & Leaves from the library that I want to get done this weekend and I'm waiting for my copy of The Thirteenth Tale to arrive.

message 112: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished the 2nd prequel of the "Left Behind" series , "The Regime-Evil Advances". The next book I will be reading is "The Rapture" which is the 3rd and final prequel before the main books.

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

Peggy,
I had the same reaction to Mila 18 - and ended up loving it. If you like it even a little, may I suggest QB VII as a follow-up? One of my faves...

message 114: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 02, 2008 10:08AM) (new)

Kat,
I'd love to hear what you think of "The Fifth Vial." I thought it was vile! Oh, and incidentally, I am currently re-re-reading "Mystic River." Unfortunately, Lehane isn't prolific enough, so I find myself re-reading at least one his books each year.

message 115: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I've only read two of Lehane's books. Mystic River was the first one I read and, well, now Gone Baby Gone is the second. I really like his writing style though and I want to read all of the books about Patrick and Angie.

message 116: by Kenzie (new)

Kenzie Right now I am re-reading Erec Rex: The Monsters of Otherness by Kaza Kingsley. I think that she is a very talented author and I love her books. This book is the second in the series. Kaza is an author here on goodreads and is really nice. I encourage everyone to read her books.

message 117: by Shary (new)

Shary (sharyfg) | 2 comments I'm reading My Antonia by Willa Cather. I'm about 40 pages into it and love it.

message 118: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 42 comments I just finished Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult and started Rasputin's Daughter by Robert Alexander this morning. First an Amish girl on trial for murder now the Russian royal family as never portrayed before and Rasputin as the misunderstood good guy.

message 119: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I'm currently reading "leftovers" by Laura Weiss until the library has the 3rd Prequel of the "Left Behind" series ready for me.

message 120: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) Just finished The Preservationist, I lvoe David Maines novels, he gives his characters such personalities, flaws and all....

Just picked up BloodSucking Fiends by Christopher Moore, this will be my 4th book from him, and most assuredly not the last!!

message 121: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I've got to read some Lehane...been meaning to get to him for a while.

I've been reading some Vonnegut for the first time since college. Honestly, some of his work doesn't hold up well over time, in my eyes, but I'm enjoying "Bluebeard." I have a long traveling day tomorrow...will read on the plane.

message 122: by Rainy (new)

Rainy what iam reading lately is tunnels that i got at borders it should be great but before that iam getting another book. it will be awesome.

I am currently reading The Glass Castle

message 124: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 13 comments I am reading "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmund Morris. It is the most fasinating biography i have ever read. Normally i cant wade through a full biography without taking a break here and there to pick up something alittle lighter, but with this one all i want to do is keep going, keep learning, keep discovering all the crazy details of the last GREAT American President. Oh and to those who are just reading Ed Abbey for the first time...WHat took you SO Long! Kidding. He inspired me to be the man i am today, not quite the radical he was, but still and unsufferable little cuss just the same.

message 125: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Currently reading All Families Are Psychotic by Douglas Coupland. So far it's good.

message 127: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Another one reading The Glass Castle here, about a quarter of the way through. I am interested to know how she makes the transition from her life as a child into one as an adult.

Also reading Cultural Amnesia by Clive James. He writes so well!!

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

I am about to read The Glass Castle after I finish The Ranch. My mom definitely thought that it was a good book. Any other feedback?

message 129: by [deleted user] (new)

Rainy,
They have that book at the Book Fair. I thought that you got it at the book fair when I saw it there.

message 130: by Shary (new)

Shary (sharyfg) | 2 comments I'm reading With You Beside Me by Catherine Anderson. I opted for a light read this time.

message 131: by Ashley (last edited Feb 07, 2008 12:22PM) (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "Leftovers" by Laura Wiess last night. I'm now reading "The Rapture" by Tim LaHaye/Jerry B. Jenkins. I will also be reading "365 Bedtime Stories" by Christine Allison.

message 132: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) I've just come off of a P.G. Wodehouse kick. Right now, I'm working on Royal Flash by George MacDonald Fraser.

message 133: by Cindy (last edited Feb 09, 2008 06:58AM) (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) The Glass Castle and The Thirteenth Tale

The Glass Castle proved to be a very fast read. I would have done it in one sitting but I kept getting interrupted.

message 134: by Ben (last edited Feb 08, 2008 01:13PM) (new)

Ben Grad (bennyboy) | 3 comments Im a little bit half way into House of Leaves by Danielewski. It has to be the best book ive read. If anyone knows of any other novels with a story similar to this one, please send me a message with the authors name.

message 135: by Claire (new)

Claire What I'm reading right now is What is the What by Dave Eggers. It's pretty engrossing and hard to put down. The tale is heartbreaking but told in a tone that is light and even funny, at times. I'm totally loving it.

message 136: by Symbol (new)

Symbol The Smoke Thief
I'm still reading it! Just a few pages a week. I only spend maybe 40 minutes a week reading it and I'm a slow reader so, it's gonna take me a while.

The Thirteenth Tale
Just finished it this morning.

A Great and Terrible Beauty
Took a break from it to reath Thirteenth Tale. I'm going to try to get back into it now.

message 137: by Amy (new)

Amy Hi I'm new to this group. I'm currently reading I,Rigoberta Menchu
An Indian Woman in Guatemala. She's an extraordinary woman involved in civil rights over there.

message 138: by Amy (new)

Amy (ldtchr) | 33 comments Right now I'm reading:

Book By Book - loving it! Some chapters are slower than others but I love words and I've found many quotes I love. I admit I don't pay too much attention to the "should reads" - I figure those are fairly subjective, but love many of the ideas and how they're put together.

Eleventh Hour
Actually trying to figure out if I've read it before or not...

Seeing Red
I seem to be easily distractible from this one at the moment.

And I just started reading Where the Sidewalk Ends with my daughters. It has been quite special being able to start sharing some of my favorites with them!

message 139: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 42 comments I was going to start Odd Thomas next. I was browsing the library during my bi weekly visit while I wait for my daughter's Daisy meeting and thought I might check out Odd Thomas, but it was out. I picked up The Good Guy by Dean Koontz and A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, both on my TBR shelf. So anyway I became interested in them and so I am now reading them both.

message 140: by Lillian (new)

Lillian | 6 comments I am reading Voices by Arnaldur Indridason. I am enjoying it so far

message 141: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) L-- you should definetly get Odd Thomas when you can. Its one of my favorite series!!

I just finished a back to back Moore Binge. I read Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck. Liked his take on vampires... Jody makes me wish i was a redhead!

Now i am reading Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow. (its a harcover purchase, GULP, at full price no less...) Its an epic poem, and i was a litte scared to start it, since ive never read one of those before, but it really reads quickly. Its sort of in the same vien as Moore, a different take on werewolves.... and i really like it so far.

message 142: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 42 comments Lori...I know, I can't wait to get the rest of the Odd Thomas series, I have heard lots of good reviews of it lately. I will go on Amazon and get it I suppose because with sick kids and snow I have been homebound most of the time lately and the library was my last hope. It is so easy to spend too much on Amazon though .

message 143: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (dwell_ondreams) | 12 comments Textbooks!

I'm currently reading about Archaeozoology in my Principles of Archaeology book (actually QUITE interesting!). Early Hominins in my Understanding Human Evolution book (most boring textbok EVER written!). And Native North Americans in my Images of the Past book (again, quite interesting). And Spanish. Ugh.

During Spring Break, I plan on re-reading the Harry Potter series & finishing Planet Earth by Fothergill & Divine by Blood by PC Cast.

message 144: by Ann (new)

message 148: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm now reading 7th Heaven by James Patterson, about two-thirds of the way through and have to say it's not one of his better ones but still a good read.

message 149: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 42 comments I am currently reading Alan Alda's Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself. I have been in the hospital the last few days and you would think that would be prime oppourtunity for reading, but the pain got the better of me and the book lay untouched most of the time. Now that I am back to my normal busy life maybe I can find the time to read some more.

message 150: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (calvamom) | 22 comments I'm reading "The Book of Lost Books". It's a history of books, many from classical times, that we know existed through some other source. Quite interesting!
