Erica Poole | 4 comments Ah, Stephanie, I can't wait to pick that one up, and Creation in Death, that is one of the newest right? Too bad I have promised myself only to buy used books on trade at my local used book store! It is a great way to save money and all, but it is awful when I am waiting for something to come out, then have to wait for someone else to give it up! Gr!

Erica Poole | 4 comments I just picked up the Bonesetter's Daughter, I have had it for a while and couldn't get motivated to read it, when all of a sudden last night, I was inspired. So far, so good!

Jim | 112 comments I am reading The Female Brain - I would recommend it to any one who is a male or female or who expects to interact with either a male or female at any time in the future - Read it and you'll see what I mean (hopefully you will)

message 56: by Ashley (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:48PM) (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I started reading "Keeping Faith" by Jodi Picoult for a group reading.

message 57: by pani Katarzyna (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:49PM) (new)

pani Katarzyna (dairy_queen) I'm reading "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx. I haven't gone too far with it yet (I'm on the page 70/320) and there's not much I can say about it. It's okay but it hasn't (at least not yet) grabbed me by my throat and told me: "Do nothing else but read me now!". But that's actually a good thing since I have a lot to do for college this next week anyway :P

Kristi (target) | 14 comments Currently reading Contact Harvest, a Halo book. It's really good so far, considering it's the authors first book.

message 61: by Elizabeth (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:16PM) (new)

Elizabeth (candlestick) | 8 comments I just finished in the last two weeks...
-Naked Lunch: Wild, out of control, I loved it!
-The Shining: Book on tape: Scary to listen to in the dark and a very good read.
-Frankenstein: such a well written story and haunting. Did you know that Frankenstein is the name of the doctor/inventor and that the monster was only mentioned a wretch or a creature?!
-I am currently reading Master and Margarita and it is soooo good. I love how the story is a vision of Russia's government during the time of Stalin. But, Bulgakov uses fantasy. Great.

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) I'm reading "Nostromo" by Conrad
Its quite interesting so far but I'm only into part one. I'll give an update when I get a bit further

message 64: by Veronica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:18PM) (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) im reading Not Exactly Normal by Devin Brown. Its below my reading level but I'm still enjoying it. To give the briefest summary possible, its about a 6th grader.

Lawriter | 4 comments I am reading Stephen J. Cannell's Three Shirt Deal, a great mystery in the Shane Scully series.

Detective Shane Scully must choose between saving his marriage, having an affair or freeing an innocent man: http://www.threeshirtdeal.com/

message 66: by Kate (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:19PM) (new)

Kate | 12 comments I am now reading "The Forgotten Man" by Robert Crais. I loved Crais' novel "Hostage," which was made into a terrible movie with Bruce Willis a couple of years ago. I have to say, though, that I am a bit disappointed in this book. It is interesting, but there are a lot of flashbacks to childhood and things seem to come together too neatly.

Oh well. As soon as I finish this one, I am starting "The Ministry of Special Cases." I am VERY excited about that one.

message 67: by Kristi (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:19PM) (new)

Kristi (target) | 14 comments I read Anthem today, scary stuff, but pretty good. I'm working on Fareinheit 451 right now, last time I tried, I couldn't get past his wifes suicide and revival...shudder. I should be able to get through it this time though.

message 68: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) Farenhiet 451 was such a great book. I dont think i really cared for the ending so much, but i didnt let that ruin the entire book for me.

I am currently reading The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore. I was going to start The Gift, but after The Book Thief, I didnt think I could handle another sad book....

Joseph-Daniel Peter Paul Abondius (bookaholic203) Hello Everyone,

At the present moment I just started Wicked by Gregory Maguire-about 50 pages into the book.

message 70: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I loved Wicked. I thought it was a really great read. I'm about halfway done with Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia Wrede. I'm not sure what I want to read next but I have a nice pile of unread books to choose from next to my bed.

message 71: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) wow. finished the Stupidest Angel in one day. and read The Gift in about 5 hrs.... I have too much time on my hands. (It might have helped that I called off of work today for a snow storm)

message 72: by Tom (new)

Tom Walsh (teew) I'm finishing "My Name is Red" by Pamuk and have started a bio of Henry James. The Pamuk novel is difficult, but the reader is rewarded by total immersion into the Ottoman Empire and its traditions of art. The style, even in translation, is luminous. Tom

message 73: by Megan (new)

Megan | 4 comments I just finished The Ghost Map and Demonologist ... one was good, the other was pure drivel. (Two points if you can guess which one was the good one!)

I'm currently reading Dark Victory, a biography of Bette Davis, and re-reading my Thomas Covenant books since I'm hoping to get his new one for Christmas.

message 74: by Summer Dawn (new)

Summer Dawn (lunarbeauty) | 2 comments Son of a Witch (Gregory Maguire), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera) and Run (Ann Patchett). I have a few other books that are in progress, but they have been put down for a while until I feel like returning to them and finishing.

Summer

message 75: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Stirrat I just finished 1984 and am reading Atonement, which I am enjoying immensely, much more so, in fact, than the movie.

message 76: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Strack (netsiren) | 5 comments I'm reading "Four to Score" by Janet Evanovich. I haven't decided what I'm reading next.

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) I finished "Hide and Seek" by Fern Michaels last night. It was actually the first book of hers that I have read... it was actually pretty good.

I am about to begin "The Fifth Vial" by Michael Palmer in the next few minutes.

message 78: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (ckthelibrarian) I am just now starting The Princessa by Harriet Rubin -- and absolutely love it! It's a must read for all women!

Jim | 112 comments started Proust and The Squid - about the science of reading - very interesting - I didn't know book existed about reading - talks about how plastic brain is and how reading caused pathways for message transmission in brain changed when humans started reading - few comments that change to digital age will have affect on the above .
Don't know if author who is a neuroscientist thinks change is for good/bad/neither but am looking forward to reading book this weekend and not shop.
have a happy holiday season and happy new year.

Paula (paula05) | 1 comments I am reading Is There No Place on Earth For Me? by Susan Sheehan (copywright 1982)...about a journalist inside following of a woman with schizophrenia and the workings of mental hopsitals, mental illnesses, medications and the psychology world of the 60s & 70s.

So far it's disturbing/sad but interesting.

I have decided to read and finish Memories of My Melancholy Whores by Gabriel García Márquez
It is a short book and kind of strange this is my first Márquez book so I guess it is a good start.

message 82: by Lisa (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:43AM) (new)

Lisa | 42 comments Just finished Water for Elephants then I read The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. The reader was like pulling teeth to get through eventhough it was so short. It ended with a lot of thing to make you think and was also a good book to read after The Book Thief since it covers a trial for some Nazi guards after the war ended.

message 83: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I finished Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington this afternoon. I got it from the library yesterday and read until I absolutely had to go to bed, about 1 in the morning, so when I got home today I only had a chapter left to finish. Very good. Tomorrow morning I'm off to the library to pick up the copy of Sickened: The Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood that I requested a few days ago. As for tonight, I have a couple of half finished fluff reads on my nightstand to choose from.

Going through this forum from page one, I had to open a second window so that I could add books to my to-read list as I read the posts. :)

message 84: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (target) | 14 comments I'm currently in a limbo state between books, actually, I can't find one that strikes my interest... So I'm going to re-read some old favorites, maybe that'll help me find something. In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions as to some good sci-fi/fantasy/fiction novels?

message 85: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Well, I'm done with Sickened: The Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood. I started it this morning and read it off and on all day. It's a pretty quick read but such an amazing book. So, now it's time to start Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

message 86: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Stirrat I am reading What Jane Austen ate and Charles Dickens saw and Supercapitalism. Supercapitalism just got really good and I hope to finish it today. Every little bit of What Jane Austen Ate is delicious, including the handy glossary, so I am savoring it.

message 87: by Carol (new)

Carol Evans | 13 comments I'm reading Enchanted by Donald Spoto. It's a biography about Audrey Hepburn. I'm really enjoying it.

message 88: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) Ive been reading a whole lot over the holidays.... More time off work means more time to read. Ive finished The Book Of Lost Things (Great book!!!) and The Fourth Bear (not so great... the begining drags and drags.. took me a week to finish it!) and The Dead Fathers Club (Awesome read!)

I am currently reading Lamb by Christopher Moore.

I also have bought three more books, I am reading like it is going out of style!

message 89: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I'm trying to finish "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult by midnight tonite.

message 90: by Wes, Moderator (new)

Wes (pricerightbooks) | 473 comments Mod
It should only take Nineteen Minutes Ashley.
Hey look Wes made a funny.... ok maybe not.
does everyone like the new format of Book-A-Holics

message 91: by RandomAnthony (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:07AM) (new)

RandomAnthony I'm less than 200 pages to the end of "Jane Eyre." I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Target, I assume you've heard of Neil Gaiman and William Gibson...they're both brilliant bridges into Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I also loved Stephenson's "Snow Crash." I'm not a huge Sci-Fi/Fantasy guy, but Gaiman, Gibson, and Stephenson have been, in my eyes, consistently strong writers that trancend what most people expect from Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

message 92: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Randomanthony - I love Gaiman. I just started reading him over the summer. A friend's husband recommended him to me and I was hooked after the first book. I've not a huge fan of Sci-Fi but I'm going to check out some of the others that you mentioned as well.

Wes - Personally, I don't care for the folders set up simply because I like to come to the forum and check out the most recently updated threads and now I have to scroll and figure out how long it's been since I was here last and all that. I liked it when I knew that all I had to do was click on the top-most thread. I'm kind of lazy like that. Just my two cents.

I'm about two-thirds done with Darkly Dreaming Dexter and I'm not really sure what I'm going to read next. I have a couple of true crime I've been waiting to get to so one of those may be next.

message 93: by Jodie (new)

Jodie (jodiemill) | 7 comments I just finished Divided In Death by J.D. Robb. It's the middle of her In Death series. I like the series - they are futuristic police murder/mystery stories that take place in New York City in the year 2059. Robots and drying tubes when you get out of the shower; cars that go vertical and life on other planets. :)

Next up was going to be the continuation Visions In Death. But then I picked up a book I got for Christmas called Backroads of Pennsylvania: Your Guide to Pennsylvania's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures By Marcus Schneck; Photographs by Glenn Davis. I started reading that last night & I'm hooked. Living in the northeastern part of PA, not far from Lancaster or Allentown, I'm interested in all aspects of this state I've lived in all my life.

message 94: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 2 comments I am currently reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Ive always wanted to read it, and I cant put it down

message 95: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I am now reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. I really loved The Kite Runner and I have heard good reviews about this one so hopefully it's as good.

message 96: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I finished Dexter and have moved onto Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress, a memoir by Susan Jane Gilman, which I bought on the spur of the moment tonight while I was in Target.

message 97: by Spuddie (new)

Spuddie Just finished Secondhand Smoke by Karen E. Olson, second in a mystery series, which I really enjoyed.

I'm currently reading The Physician's Tale by Ann Benson (sequel to the historical fiction/plague fiction books The Plague Tales and Burning Road) and am really getting into it. I love plague fiction, though!

At work I have John Dunning's last Cliff Janeway mystery (about a former cop now a book dealer) The Bookwoman's Last Fling in paperback to read. Also really enjoying that.

And in audio download from the library, I'm listening to Dave Barry's Money Secrets: Like, Why Does the Dollar Have a Giant Eye? which is nice for a little light-hearted humor.

Looks like the year is off to a great start!

Cheryl

message 99: by Kathy (last edited Jan 03, 2008 06:22AM) (new)

Kathy (thebrainlair) I'm a middle school librarian and we have two book groups going right now. So for those, I'm reading Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Since our meeting for Cry comes first, I will finish that today. Then write about it before I finish the Book Thief.

For fun, I'm reading Laurie Barnholdt's Two-Way Street. It's a lighthearted YA romp. So far it's good and easy to read!

message 100: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jan 03, 2008 07:07AM) (new)

RandomAnthony I'm nearing the end of Jane Eyre. I'm enjoying it immensely. Ms. Bronte gets some bad PR...she can flat-out write, and her psychological insights are incisive. Plus, she published this when she was thirty-one. Don't know what I'll read next, I probably need something lighter for a bit...do other people tend to look for something lighter after reading something intense as well?
