Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Just finished the third Harry Potter book and although it was a little better than the first two books, Harry really started annoying me in this one so only gave it two stars again.

Also finished The Great Right Hope by Mark Jackman, which I won on GR and loved it. It was absolutely hysterical, a completely new direction for vampire books with an anti-hero you know you shouldn't like but for some reason you really do.

I'm now reading Kelley Armstrong's Dime Store Magic, continuing on with the Women of the Underworld series.

Lisa | 24 comments Finished Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I am reading Eating Animals. Both were from the Free Library of Philadelphia. Best $15 I ever spent.

Stuart (asfus) | 86 comments I am reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman as I wondered if it met the high standards of the other books of his that I have read.

Lisa | 24 comments Finished Eating Animals and started on A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. Heard that it was funny and entertaining and enlightening. I love that part of the country too. Headed back to Gatlinburg this summer.

Alexis (aesquibel25) | 8 comments Stuart wrote: "I am reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman as I wondered if it met the high standards of the other books of his that I have read."

I just finished "The Graveyard Book" and I did enjoy it although I didn't think it ws as good as some of his other books. The concept was interesting but the book (although short) was a little slow and didn't seem to go anywhere. One of the characters introduced didn't seem to play a very big role in the book either. It was enjoyable just not memorable.

message 1759: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start House of Day, House of Night. I am curious to read it b/c it is written by a promising new Polish author. I like translated books.

I just finished Revolt in Paradise. Here follows my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
It was definitely an enjoyable read, but it demands a discerning eye! The author's role in the historical events are, I believe, a bit exagerated! You will learn a lot, and it is very excting.

It is looking a bit four star at the moment. It is very good indeed, but lacks the "wow" factor that would give it the fifth star

Sara (sahayra) | 2 comments I'm reading The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale by Joseph Conrad. I'm reading it because I bought this book about 6 years ago, and just didn't have time to read it. I kinda chose it for the cover, but also I had read another of his books, and thought I'd give it a try.

message 1766: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments I'm reading You Are Next by Katia Lief, which I won on GR and thoroughly enjoying it so far.

I'm also reading OBSERVER'S BOOK OF WILD ANIMALS OF THE BRITISH ISLES by W J STOKOE (EDITOR), which a friend of mine gave me on the weekend (he knows of my love for old books).

Valerie | 95 comments Just started Romancing Miss Bronte by Juliet Gael. I love the book Jane Eyre, and the history of the Bronte sisters... recently read 2 other books about Charlotte Bronte and really enjoyed those as well. Seriously LOVE HF, and so far I'm really enjoying this book.

message 1771: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start The Samurai's Garden, on the recommendations of Jeanette and Christine!

I just finished House of Day, House of Night. The author is a highly acclaimed Polish author. She definitely has a way with words, but .... Well, here is my GR review:

message 1774: by Tina (new)

Tina (garcia02) I have just finished Pride and Prejudice..again. I fall more in love with that book (..and Mr. Darcy) every time I read it. I am now staring The Great Gatsby & Mr. Darcy's Diary.

message 1775: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) I'm currently reading Main Street #8 - Special Delivery, which is a kids series by Ann M Martin (who wrote my fave kids series, The Baby-Sitters Club)

I'm reading it because I'm an elementary school teacher and I like to read kids books still. I also really like Ann M. Martin and generally really like her books. I think after this I will pick an "adult" book though :)

message 1776: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) Tina, I loved the Great Gatsby but not until after I had finished it. Try not to hate the book because of the characters. Fitzgerald made them like they are for a reason. I hope you enjoy it!

Next up: The Cookbook Collector and Moonlight Mile.

message 1779: by Aileen (new)

Aileen I'm trying to listen to Dorothy Dunnett's The Game of Kingson audio, but having real trouble following the story. I think it might be too complex for an audio version. I hate spending money on an audiobook and then buying the hard copy... :(

message 1780: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I just finishedThe Samurai's Garden and my GR reviews follosw: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
This was very much a love story!

I will now start Shark Dialogues. It too is concerned with leprosy, but we jump all the way over from Japan to Hawai for the setting.

Becky (divadog) Okay - My Amazon wish list is now 7 pages long! Largely because of you guys! So many great books, so little time.

I'm reading The Third Reich at War, 1939-1945. This is the third of a recent series, and I'm reading because I am curious what caused the Nazi movement, how it impacted people, and what should we consider today - what lessons can we learn.

message 1782: by Mrs C (new)

Mrs C (andrienne) I'm reading Taming Your Outer Child: A Revolutionary Program to Overcome Self-Defeating Patterns and Reach Your Goals. Just your usual beginning-of-the-year type of book. It's quite interesting.

message 1783: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 1 comments I just finished Don't Look Twice: A Novel and I was really disappointed with it. There have been lots of comments on him about some of his other books-all good reviews but I found this book to be very boring.

message 1784: by Chris (new)

Chris (christmax) Major Pettigrews Last Stand - Helen Simonson

message 1785: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I just started The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I am enjoying it quite a bit. I also started Faith, Madness, and Spontaneous Human Combustion: What Immunology Can Teach Us About Self-Perception. I took a great class from the author in college and was excited to find out about his book. Unfortunately, my progress on it has been slow. Guess I wasn't really in the mood for non-fiction this week.

message 1788: by Ivan (new)

Ivan The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie - why? because my Bright Young Things group is reading it this month.

message 1789: by Donna (new)

Donna | 79 comments Picked up Caravans: A Novel of Afghanistan by James Michner and I'm still listening to The Hanging in the Hotel

message 1790: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I find it interesting that they've changed the name of Caravans to include "A Novel of Afghanistan". It seems to be out of keeping with Michner's one word titles. I've read the book and it is memorable. It was years ago that I read it, and I still remember events from it.

I started reading A Cold Night for Alligators because I won it in giveaways. I've also started reading A Painted House because it's our book club's next selection.

message 1791: by Butterflycager (new)

Butterflycager I'm reading Juliet by Anne Fortier because my library finally got it!

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments I've just started Murder in Midwinter by Lesley Cookman as I won another in the series, which I really enjoyed so now I'm working through the rest and so far so good.

message 1794: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am dumping Shark Dialogues. Here is why: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I am so relieved to not have to open that book anymore.

I get all excited every time I open a new book! But wouldn't you get excited?! Check out The Tale of the Rose: The Love Story Behind The Little Prince. Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote The Little Prince, definitely one of my favorites. Probably one of yours too! Well, here is the memoir of the woman behind the tale, Exupéry's muse, the inspiration for the Little Prine's beloved rose! Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry died in 1979, 35 years after her husband. The manuscript for this memoir was discovered in a trunk in 1999 by an academic doing research for the biography of her husband.

Lisa | 24 comments I just finished The Cookbook Collector and started Moonlight Mile. I need to finishe by Monday since it is due back to the library on the 14th! I picked it because I read the book right before it, Gone, Baby, Gone.

message 1796: by Chrissie (last edited Feb 11, 2011 05:21AM) (new)

Chrissie I am just starting Between Two Seas. Why? Well, because I very much liked another novel that I read by this author, entitled The Homecoming Party. Maybe you remember how much I liked it?! I believe I have already posted a link to my GR review here. This author was born in an Italo-Albanian community in Calabria, Italy, I loved his style of writing.

I just finished The Tale of the Rose: The Love Story Behind The Little Prince. I think it is wonderful, absolutely wonderful. It will be appreciated by anyone who truly loves The Little Prince. I felt that many of the reviews here at GR were unfairly negative, so if you are interested in reading another pov, here follows mine: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 1797: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 95 comments I just started reading a YA book called Pegasus by Robin McKinley. I actually started it Monday evening, but it was just so dang "dry" in the very beginnning. I put it down for several days & just picked it back up today... So far it's picked up and seems to be much better, and hopefully will continue to be so.

message 1798: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 13 comments I'm rereading The Mammoth Huntersby Jean M. Auel because I am rereading them in preparation for the release of The Land of Painted Caves which is to be the last book of the series.

message 1799: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 24 comments Finished Moonlight Mile and started Mockingbird. Mockingbird was recommended to me on another board, and it is wonderful so far. I really wanted to see how the author handled the character's POV with Asperger's.

message 1800: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am about to start The Royal Physician's Visit, which is historical fiction. I expect to learn something, hopefully, and this Swedish author is said to be really excellent. Actually, I feel like grabbing The Book about Blanche and Marie but I am having difficulty getting it. It is sold out everywhere, both the Swedish edition in Sweden and the English one at Book Depsitory. So, since I have this one, it will have to do. I can judge if I like the writing. It does annoy me that I am reading the translated English edition. Oh well....

I just finsihed Be tween Two Seas, and here is my GR review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
If you want to try this Italo-Albanian author, I would recommend you start with The Homecoming Party first. I enjoyed this a bit more. You can definitely see it is the same author writing!
