Well, this series does take place in the Victorian era. People got married much earlier then and remember that Shadowhunters get married young.
For those of you wondering why Jem and Will didn't notice that they both were in love with Tessa: Clare addressed the question on her tumblr page.

OMG!!! A whole year! I wish I could at least see the genealogic tree...I'm trying to fit the characteres of MI with the ones in ID (I love ID so much more!!!), but I get stuck haha I also think that Jem is not gonna live, because there's no Carstair in the MI series...About Will and Tessa...well I don't think they could be together forever, and we know that she appears a century later...unless it's her ghost or spirit who is talking to Magnus in the epilogue of the third MI...well Claire thougth the looks of Tessa remembered her of someone, could it be Jace or someone related to him (that would mean that Tessa and Will had children!!! pleeeease be right!!!)...Can't wait for the final book! Althoug this one was sad - I cried so much when Will discovered that there was no curse and tells Tessa T___T - i liked the end of it. I would prefer Tessa to end with Will, but that would be too soon!!! Congratulations on Cassandra Clare for one more AMAZING book!!! This series are great! Especially The Infernal Devices one!!!

Yes, Chyna!!! They love each other, but it was hard for them to let the other know...Tessa also loves Jem, Will's best friend...and now she's engaged to him T___T

Yes Jessamine and Gabriel would be brill.. their personalities would totally clash.. I think Gabriel and Cecily could be good too - I mean can you imagine Will's reaction to that.

Yeah, I liked this idea! There's another theory...maybe maryse maiden name was carstairs, so jem could end up with cecily, because, alec looks like Will (like Magnus thought), and Cecily is the spitting image of her brother...So Maryse could be the daughter of Cecily and Jem. But if <3

It was sad that Tessa got engaged to Jem. Then Will found out about the curse not being true and then Cecily turns up at the end. I can't wait for Clockwork Princess!!!!!!!

Somehow... I think one of them may become immortal. Anyone remember how Alec asked Magnus if he wanted to make him immortal? And then Magnus said no such thing comes without a price? Maybe Magnus tried and something went wrong. But we can never know; Clare is one of the best authors when it comes to throwing EVERYTHING you thought you knew right off track. Seriously, you NEVER know what is going to happen XD

This book gave use a few anwers. but we are open minded again. and it was a cliffhanger!! why does CC do this to us. its torture!! my heart is broken for will :(
everyone is saying that Tessa and Jem getting engaged was the most horrible thing ever and i agree but also disagree. I mean u gotta admit how brilliant cassandra was for making that jawbreaker up. I bet nobody saw it coming and i just love the shocking surprise in book. It sure those make it even more thrilling. Anyway what i as saying is that i love Will and this surprise engagement made it impossible to not want to read the next book immediately and i think that's what cassa was aiming for...
i love this series more than the mortal instruments, i love will more than jace and I am dying to see this book on silver screen!!! i really hope this guy, nicholas hoult would be our will <3

Unfortunately, it is my understanding that this series is only going to be a trilogy. I love the setting, time period, and characters. Plus, after reading Clockwork Angel, IT is what set me to reading the Mortal Instruments series. I had been anticipating the release of Clockwork Prince and it most definitely did NOT disappoint!! I love that Clare weaves characters from the MI series into this cast of characters as well, especially Magnus Bane. He is truly one of my favorites from both, even if he is just a supporting character. As for Will and Jem not realizing the other was in love with Tessa...that is fairly easy to explain. Will was so caught up in trying to break the nonexistant curse he couldn't see the forrest for the trees and Jem was so focused on Tessa and actually having the love he never thought he would he was blind to pretty much everything else. I feel for Tessa because I believe she loves them both in different ways for different reasons.

After reading this book, I was so TORN between Jem and Will!!!! My heart broke for Will when he told Tessa about the curse, but I was just SO happy when Jem proposed to her!!!! In LOVE with this series.

Clare has such a huge talent for telling stories and nailing details of each period that you feel like you are actually in that moment seeing things as they were/are...LOVE her writing and would definitely read a Bane book!!

I heard CC is writing another shadow hunter series taking place in LA five or six years after the MI series. So maybe we can see some of those characters make a kameo. But she did mention to look out for characters we meet in MI who are 12-13 years old, because they will be of age and out and about during the new series. I believe it is called Dark Artifices. (just went and looked it up. its posted on her blog). I also love how she wove the characters in through the 150 years like Tessa and Magnus. I hope we get to know post ID Tessa in the next book, but I'm afraid that would give too much away about the last ID book. So she will probably save Tessa involvement for the Last MI book so we will have already read the last ID books. But I have been know to over think things too much ;)
it sucks that Tessa's marrying Jem! when he proposed and she said yes, i was so angry i cried a little bit. i mean, yeah, Jem's a sweetie, but come on! Will for the win! they better get together in the next book.

Tessa and Will belong together. tessa doesnt love jem the way she loves will. and her heart is still with will, so not fair for jem or will. i think tessa will break jems heart, only cuz sophie is so sure she will.
mmm, and i think she is more in love with the IDEA of being in love with Jem. because even once she's engaged to him, she has to tell herself that it's JEM she's marrying, not Will. she's obviously head-over-heels for Will.
Guys Cassandra Clare has made it very clear the Tessa IS truly in love with Jem just as much as Will, that's what makes it a love triangle. The only reason it wasn't as obvious to tessa that she loved Jem cause she was so conscious of being pushed away by will and her feeling crept up on her We all know Will was forced to push Tessa away but by pushing her away that's what brought Jem and her together

I don't think Tessa and Will should be together, it's too obvious and too much like Clary and Jace being together in MI.
I think this is Clare's best book yet! I love how she always has so many twists and turns. It makes it pretty much impossible to stop reading! Loved it!! :D
I liked the book a lot. But the outcome with Will and Tessa broke my heart! I was hoping they'd be together, but that's not what happened.
