Neil | 4 comments I read a book when I was a child that I would like to share with my own child. I read this book in the early 1980's; it's a series of short stories where two dogs solve various mysteries or solve puzzles. I remember that one dog was taller, wore a houndstooth jacket (I believe), and the other was his assistant and was shorter.

One of the puzzles was as follows: The two detectives are in a town where they haven't been before, and the assistant dog is looking to get a haircut. There are only two barbers in town. One barber has a great haircut and clean store, whereas the other has a terrible haircut and a messy store. The assistant goes to the messy store, as he determines that the bad haircut must have been given by the other barber. At the end of this particular story there is a picture of the assistant with a great haircut. This was memorable because it was the only time the assistant got the better of the senior dog detective.

Hopefully someone remembers this book! It's driving me crazy that I cannot recall the title.

Abby | 215 comments Sorry, but I don't know what it is.

It sounds familiar to "Hank the Cowdog." Perhaps this will spark some memories/discussion that can help you find your book.

Best of luck.

Hi Abby,

Thanks for the reply. The two characters in the book I'm referring to walk upright, and were altogether anthropomorphized. Hopefully that helps clarify things a little bit.

Taylor (winterslacker) | 10 comments The Case of the Giggling Geeks (Secret Agent Dingledorf and his trusty dog SPLAT #1)? It's a series, but I think there's only one dog.

Hi Taylor,

Thanks for the post! Unfortunately that's not the one, and again many thanks.

D.M. Dutcher | 339 comments The only thing I can find by searching in that Timeframe is Brenda Sivers "The Adventures of Sherlock Hound" series, but the information is pretty slim on what the books actually are. Count Doberman of Pinscher, Hound in the highlands, hound and the curse of kali, etc. Not sure if they are what you want, but these were published in the 80s.

wow-I remember (vaguely) that series Dmd. Don't really remember anything about the actual stories either, but just the fact that the series exists. I don't think I have any left either. My shelves of children's/ya were decimated by Mongol Hordes--er I mean my grandkids a couple of years back, and I've not been able to find/replace many of the books from those shelves.
