Anne (reachannereach) Mikki,

did you see what Constance wrote above? I'll copy it here just in case you missed it.

: if anyone wants to a literary version of "15 countries in 10 days" tour, go to dalkeyarchive.com and click on books "by country." There you find works, mostly short stories, by authors from the smaller countries such as Liechtenstein, Estonia, Latvia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Cyprus, and so on.

MOSTLY SHORT STORIES.......

message 3: by Betty (new)

Betty If I could do anything, I would join those who read the books in the Dalkey Archive. There are people who do it. I read the stories from Greece and liked them. I see Japan is also represented with The Shadow of a Blue Cat and others which I'll check. Thank you, Constance, for mentioning the site.

message 4: by Betty (last edited Dec 06, 2011 11:00AM) (new)

Betty There's also the Special Sales at Dalkey happening. According to World Cat, the library near me owns "The Shadow of a Blue Cat". That's good. I'll have to check about the rest.

Mikki, you're right about the lengths!!

message 5: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments OK. I give up. What is so funny about the lengths? All the stuff I looked at was collections of short stories. Did I miss something?

message 6: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Constance, I think that is just something between Mikki and Asmah about; I'm guessing it's about the length of the story/stories.

message 7: by Betty (new)

Betty Unless they finished, readers are hurrying to meet the deadline for the site-wide 2011 Goodreads Challenge, i.e., the number of books they said they would read between Jan 1 and December 31. So, length might be a criteria at this point in time to reach the quota.

message 8: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Well, the point I was making is that many of the authors on the site represent countries that are not on the master list for the country challenge. In any case, it was not necessary to scream! I can "hear" quite well.

message 9: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Constance, I appreciate that you have many books that are different and not simply drawn for other lists. Thanks.

Betty Constance wrote: "Well, the point I was making is that many of the authors on the site represent countries that are not on the master list for the country challenge. In any case..."

The key is that readers have a choice as to the way they assign books and countries. Expand the possibilities by pairing a country with an author, a setting, or a theme.

Betty Chrissie wrote: "Constance, I appreciate that you have many books that are different and not simply drawn for other lists. Thanks."

The Silence of the Rain from Brazil is something I might like to read as I am finishing a year in Brazil and Peru in The World's Literature.
I agree with Chrissie about the list you made and admire the effort you put into making it.

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Barry wrote: "Constance wrote: "So, here is my list. "

very cool, Constance!

if these are your final choices and you're not just listing possibilities, can you go ahead and link the titles of the books? it's o..."

message 13: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Barry: Thank you for letting me know how to link my books. However I still can't figure it all out. I click "edit" -- a pop-up window appears -- I write in the title -- get the list of possible edition of book -- click on one -- get number code. So far, so good. But then I am supposed to cut and paste that code over where the title in the list. I go back to the post with my list, but the program won't let me erase from my list (in my post) in order to copy the code in. What have I done wrong?

message 14: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments I did what you said and it went fine until the part when I cut and paste into my list. Was I supposed to copy the whole list into the pop-up window? The computer won't let me cut or paste into the original list I posed on this discussion.

message 15: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Follow the bouncing ball....

1. Go to Message #1, and click edit.
2. With your cursor at the bottom of the window, click on "add book/author". Another window will come up.
3. Type in the book title and click add beside the appropriate to select it.
4. You will see the link encased in square brackets back in your editing window.
5. Highlight the link, making sure you have the square brackets in the highlight.
6. Press Control X (it will move it to your clipboard).
7. Scroll up to the book you originally typed.
8. Highlight the Title of the book you want to replace with the link.
9. Press Control V.
10. Rince and repeat until your list is complete.
(I would recommend that you save periodically by clicking on the "Edit Post" icon at the bottom of the window.)

I hope that helps a bit. It can get confusing. It's frustrating that Goodreads drops the link to the bottom of the window and that you have to cut and paste. Many people are asking that Goodreads change it so that the link will appear whereever the cursor rests.

Betty Constance, remember when you are writing the post and adding book/author into the post, what you see will be a bracketed code, something like this [bok:The Palace of Dreams|797635]. Don't worry it is not highlighted while you are still writing the post. When you press to 'post' or 'preview', the bracketed code will automatically appear the way it should, highlighted-- The Palace of Dreams

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Sorry I re-posted that. My computer wouldn't let me edit the original list; keeps telling me that I am currently editing it. Apparently clicking "cancel edit" doesn't do anything. So I will try to post off this new list.

message 19: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments You all are fabulous! I think I've got it now. Thank you so much!

message 20: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Mostly done. Just a couple of questions:

1. Several of the books I listed are not on the GoodReads database. What do I do?

2. After I finished coding all the books, I hit "preview" and it showed up all highlighted like you said. What do I click next? My only other choice was "edit post" and that just returned me to the edit box.

Thanks in advance for everyone's patience!

message 21: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Apparently that list did post. Beginner's luck clicking on the right thing.

I just need to know how to get the books that weren't in the database linked.

Again: thank you all!

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments Thank you, Asmah. I'll do that.

Janice (jamasc) I found Goodreads a bit confusing at first. In fact, it was months before I even starting using it. Once you get over the hurdle and figure out the features, it's an awesome site.
