Nemie (nhemskie) | 6 comments I've read 23 books... to which some I don't remember because I read it when I was still in university. I thought Holes by Louis Sachar and Messenger by Lois Lowry are nice books to be on the list.

message 52: by Tango (new)

Tango Hi, I've read 32 and am planning to read Twilight to see what all the teenagers (and adults) are raving about.

message 53: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leo23) I have read 11 of the books on this list and there are quite a few others that I plan to read. Would have liked "The Mists of Avalon" on the list, but only because it's my favourite - well one of my favourites.

message 54: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I have read 23, 9 more are in my TBR pile at home...

message 55: by Trisha (new)

Trisha (georgiapeach8355) Ive read 15 out of the 50. Honestly, most of them, but not all, of the rest im not really interested in reading.

message 56: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) I have read 18 of the 50 and there are about 3 that I might have read in High School and don't remember for sure.

I have about 10 more that are on my to-read shelf. Maybe during Christmas Break I will get to a couple of them.

I need to read book two in Twilight series. Don't see the movie until you have read the book.

message 57: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Tuell (booksloveme) i have read only 6 but have a lot more on either my TBR list or wish list.

message 58: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) I've read 21 of them.
And most of the rest is on my TBR list.

message 59: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (uncadrew) | 10 comments I've read 19 off the list and liked most of them, and I figure to read about 9 more eventually. Many I've never heard of but plan to look up. Can't really recommend any, as this is just based on what people found popular, but an interesting way to find out about some titles.

message 60: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) I've read 26 of the books on the list.

Was this list taken from Listopia, or was it compiled out of actual ratings statistics on GR?

Also, as for membership on GR, while surfing the Groups area one day, I found a couple of groups for classes of a particular teacher, and then one of the groups mentions that it was a requirement of every student in the 7th grade in that school to have a GR account...

That will beef up the numbers of people who will have read the HP and Twilight books, but perhaps have not yet gotten to all the 'classics' in school that many of the adults on GR have read.

message 61: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I have read 17 of the books on the list, and really want to read little women. I have Angels & Demons sitting on my TBR pile. I really did not enjoy Life of Pi and thought it was over rated.

message 62: by Angela (new)

Angela I have read 14 but have about 15 or so on my tbr...

message 63: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Wow- I was surprised to find out that I have already read 25 of these books and have 10 more on my TBR list. I guess that is why they are so popular huh?

The two books I would take off are "Angels and Demons", I didn't even finish it, and "Wicked" which I slogged through but didn't really enjoy. I liked the musical much better, and I was it AFTER I had read the book.

The book I would add is "Tarzan of the Apes".

I have read a whopping 30 of the books on the list, WOW! Also, I have partially read two of them, but never finished them and I have 6 on my TBR list, as well as about 6 -10 more that I have contemplated reading, but have not added to my list cuz I have so many other books that I want to read first. I told you I will read almost anything. A lot of them I read when I was in high school and going through a classics phase.

Lyn (Sis) I'm intersested to know which books you would take off the list and which you would add.

message 66: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) How many of the above list have you read?
Well from the list I have read 23.

Which ones have you been wanting to read but just haven't? How many are there?
I would love to read all of the 50 books, right know I have 10 in my tbr list, I believe slowly I will read all the 50 in the list.
Which book do you think don't deserve this popularity?
Well for me Middlesex and Life of Pi don't ask me why I didn't like them as other people liked them. It is only the reading taste of each person.
What book have you read, really liked, and you would expect it to be on the list but isn't?
Well I would like to see The Book Thief as well as other classic ones as Rebecca.

message 67: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey I've read 21!

So - I've thought about this and here is the thing. The list is the 50 most popular books, so I can't really take any off since I can see why they are all popular. With that said, the ones that I have read and did not like were:

Lord of the Flies - I hated this book when I had to read it in Junior High, too much ugliness going on for me.

Life of Pi - I slogged through this book, but found it boring.

The Lovely Bones - This book was alright, but not great.

Also - I am not a big Tolkein fan, but would never take them off this type of list since I agree that most people really enjoy them. I loved the movies, though.

What would I add - Hawaii A Novel - There's my historical fiction bias coming up again. While I liked all but one of the Michner books I read, Hawaii was my first and favorite.
The Fever series (Faefever, bloodfever, etc.) and the Dresden series are the two series that are for me like Harry Potter is for most people. I always pre-order the next one and drop whatever I am reading to read it as soon as it comes out.

You didn't finish Angels & Demons? Wow, I really enjoyed that book. By the way, Dan Brown has a new book coming out in September and I can't wait.

I agree with you on Wicked. It's one of the ones that I have only partially read, although I do intend to finish it someday. I liked the musical, but thought it made the whole thing to light and airy.

Tarzan of the Apes, huh? Knowing you as I do, no surprise there. What about Shoes of the Fisherman?

message 70: by Leora (new)

Leora Wow, I have read 33 of these and have several more in my TBR pile. Most of them were very good/entertaining. Looking forward to 'The Time travelers Wife'.

message 71: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) I've read 17, my wish list includes To Kill A Mockingbird, Secret Life of Bees, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Me Talk Pretty Some Day, and Life of Pi. I'm going to have to utilize the library a lot more, a result of a toss-up between purchasing more books or getting much-needed chiropractic work done. :-)

message 72: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Stebbins | 10 comments I've read 19. I would like to read quite a few of the others, my first read will probably be The Lovely bones.

message 73: by René (new)

René (bookgeek4life) | 7 comments I've read 7 of these. I've got a couple of them on my to read list. I really didn't get through Wicked as the 1st few pages bored me, but I'm going to try again and I don't know if I'll read Harry Potter because I've already seen the movies.

message 74: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 9 comments I've read 17
I own 8 others I haven't read yet.

message 75: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Jennifer - I'm sure most would agree that the HP movies aren't a good substitute for the books. It's difficult to do justice to 700+ page books in just 2 hours, you know? Even for the shorter books, the movies aren't nearly as good as the books.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) I've only seen the first Harry Potter movie. It's a reasonably faithful translation to the screen - but it is by far the shortest novel in the series.

I would recommend reading the books.

message 77: by René (new)

René (bookgeek4life) | 7 comments Jamie - I can agree with that because I don't think Twilight did any justice for the book. I'm actually scared to watch the next movie. I did hear the HP movies was pretty accurate but you and Susanna just talked me into reading the books. Thanks!

message 78: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments I have read 15 so far. Amazingly enough, I have never read any of the Harry Potter books which was quite a lot of the books on the list.

message 79: by Cam (new)

Cam I'm pretty much the same Tara. 18 read, none of them from the HP series.

message 80: by Lennie (new)

Lennie (wwwgoodreadscomprofilelennie) | 36 comments I've read 16 on the list and have 4 on my TBR list, one of which is Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. I'm really looking forward to that one because I heard she is a good author.

message 81: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Jennifer - I'm glad to hear that you're planning on reading HP. The earlier movies are much more true to the books, but you still miss out on a lot.

I TOTALLY forgot about "Shoes of the Fisherman". I guess I would put it on a list of "Best Books of all TIme" but not "Most Popular". That doesn't diminish my love for it though.

message 83: by Adam (new)

Adam (adaml) I'v read 4. Am suprised that Dostoevsky is not on the train, as he is all one needs, for much of a time.

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (lesmisarahbles) | 3 comments Why oh why is Stephanie Meyer on there?! She's not a /good/ writer! How saddening, even if all this is is a popularity list.

message 85: by Lynne (new)

23, you go girlfriend! Keep reading instead of playing Bejeweled. You are getting too good. LOL.

message 86: by Emily (new)

Emily Why is Stephanie Meyer on this? She is not a good writer! I've read, so far, about 19 of these books.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Look at it this way - she is also on the worst books of all times list. Looks like people either love her writing or hate it!

I would be interested in seeing an update of this list to see how/if it has changed.

message 88: by Tango (new)

Tango Have read 34 and want to read another two. i must admit that I hadn't heard much about some of the ones I hadn't read.

As for Twilight, yes it's popular, but I wasn't all that excited about it and certainly don't feel a burning desire to read the others.

message 89: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Milly wrote: "Why is Stephanie Meyer on this? She is not a good writer! I've read, so far, about 19 of these books."

I think this is just popularity and she is popular. I enjoyed the series, but you are right. I am not sure if I would say she is the best writer, but I do think she is entertaining and well suited for the YA genre she writes for. I have not read The Host yet though, I heard it was her attempt at an adult-fiction book.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Lyn wrote: "I would be interested in seeing an update of this list to see how/if it has changed."

You can see an updated list here:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/popular...

Although it looks like that list doesn't get updated all that often. The current list says it was generated 04/14/2009.

I like to look at the "most read" lists because you can limit it by certain genre in addition to looking at "this week," "this month," and "all time." Also, it looks like the most read lists are updated more often:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/most_re...

message 91: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 61 comments I'm now up to 37 from the list but I didn't set out to read more of them. I don't think I'll ever get up to the full 50 though-I have tried the LOTR books before-can't imagine I'll ever make it all the way through them all.

message 92: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (uncadrew) | 10 comments I'm up to 23 now, although I read most of them in school as requirements. I'm surprised there's no science fiction at all. I would think Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land," or some Asimov or Bradbury might make it in. Ah scifi, the Rodney Dangerfield of literature.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) No, that's romance that's the Rodney Dangerfield of literature!

Yet I'm told it makes up a third of what's published every year in the U.S.

message 94: by Christy (new)

Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) 2, 9, 15, 19, 20, 21, 31, 35, 39, 47...

I've read only 10 of them...and wish to read no more lol Most of them I didn't enjoy.

message 95: by Sara (last edited Jul 12, 2009 08:32AM) (new)

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments I have read 34 of these so far and many of those I haven't are on my to read list. As much as I love the Twilight series, I don't think it should be on this list with all the other wonderful classics and soon to be classics.

message 96: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (greendragon06) | 2 comments I have read 31 of the books on the list. There are two books on the list that I would like to read someday: Middlesex and The Poisonwood Bible.
Seeing as it is a most popular list and not a best list, as some other people have pointed out, I think that they all deserve to be on the list: I have always thought that popular and best are not the same thing in any way, although a book can be popular and good quality.

message 97: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (uncadrew) | 10 comments Where can I find this list? I am terribly confused; I looked all over the site, but I am lowly cook and not computer savvy.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) The list in question is in the first post in this thread, I believe.

message 99: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2241 comments I have read 16 and would like to read a few more. I finished "The Help" and "The Book Thief" yesterday, and both could be added to the above list.

message 100: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I am now up to 30. Although I am thinking that the list has likely changed substantially in the year and a bit sine it was first posted.
