Chapter 4: A Book as A ResumeIf you’re wondering what would impress an employer more than a well written resume, have you considered a book? Think about it, if you were to show up to your potential employer and interview for a job, which do you think you would rather have, a list of relevant experiences that everyone else who’s applying for the job will have, or a unique fact about you that not only highlights your skills or knowledge, but also puts you ahead of the crowd in terms of achievement?
Writing a book intentionally as a resume piece isn’t a bad idea, especially if you’re in a very competitive field where you’ll have to do everything in your power to get ahead of the curve. So how exactly can you present a book as a resume? It’s easier than you think!
The first thing that an employer is looking for when evaluating a prospective employee is what makes them stand out. Think about it, most of the time when you’re applying for a job, especially one that’s competitive, you will be competing against many others who more or less have the same qualifications as you do. So with that in mind, what would stand out more than a book?
So am I saying that if you write a book, you’ll get the job you’ve always dreamed of? Not necessarily, but what I am proposing to you is that there is immense value to be had in having a book to your name, especially in the professional world. It takes time, energy and discipline to make a good book, so the very idea of you having written one would quickly catch any employers eye.
Even if you aren’t terribly interested in writing as a career, the benefits of having your own book can still get you ahead in your respective field. Interested? I hope so!
So assuming that you were approaching the idea of writing a book purely for resume purposes what would the steps be for such an undertaking? Let’s take a look.
Resume Book Writing Step 1: Relevancy
Unlike other styles of book writing, this one is actually designed to for the person reading the book as opposed to your own style or story. While it is still extremely valuable to have a personal story to share or a concept that you want to get across, you must ask the question about how relevant your work will be to a potential employer.
For example, if you work in the high powered corporate world of finance, a book on finance would serve you incredibly well as opposed to a book on say, cooking. By focusing on choosing a style of book that would be popular with your prospective employer, you are increasing your chances of being noticed. The more relevant your work is to your employment situation, the better it is going to look on your resume. So if you are interested in writing a book purely to improve your resume, then I would greatly encourage you to focus on writing in the most relevant field possible.
It might help for you to imagine what your potential employer would read personally. If the book concept is strong enough to catch their interest, it’s strong enough to put you on their radar. So if your potential employer would respond incredibly well to a book on Emergent Technologies, write on that subject.
It might not necessarily be the most passionate project you have, but writing a book as a resume piece is more about transferring the passion that you have for your career field into the book you are making!
Resume Book Writing Step 2: Quality
Once you’ve decided to write on your chosen topic, it is of the utmost importance that your work is of the highest quality that you can muster. You might not need to have the best book in the world, but you should strive to create something that would be able to attest to your prowess as an employee and demonstrate your knowledge in that field.
Remember, we’re looking at getting you a job here, so treat your book as seriously as you would treat a resume. You wouldn’t send in a resume with errors, inaccuracies and rambling incoherence would you? Not at all! So, as you build up your book, try to keep the end goal in mind so you can write with clarity and efficiency.
If you aren’t a writer by nature or you find the technical aspect of writing daunting, don’t’ be afraid to look for extra help. Hiring an editor or an assistant can greatly improve your ability to make that book. And if you’re serious about getting into that job, it can be a good investment.
Resume Book Writing Step 3: Authority
Just like we talked about writing a book for building credibility in your field, you should have the goal of billing yourself as an authority on the subject matter at hand. Remember, you aren’t just trying to write a book for fun here, we’re trying to accomplish an important task of being credible enough to win you a job. This means you’re going to have to go that extra mile in focusing on building up the authority on what you are writing.
Just as we discussed earlier, this doesn’t involve making things up, but rather it involves working to establish new patterns of thought, research or methodology that would cause you to stick out in a sea of other books. Being able to say “oh yeah I wrote a book about that” and being able to back it up with a good, strong book that is informative and accurate will put you miles ahead of your competition.
Resume Book Writing Step 4: Visibility
This is an important step that should not be skipped if you’re trying to put together a book that will catch your employers eye. Visibility means that your book has some level of exposure to the world. It is easy enough to throw something up on Amazon and point to your book that has neither sales nor reviews and say “check out my amazing book.” But, when scrutinized, it will become quite apparent that your book isn’t much of a hit.
While you don’t have to write the next bestseller, your book should have the intentions of being marketable and saleable so that others can derive value from it. You should also make a point to try and make it as visible as possible, putting in energy to market the work. This is not necessarily for the monetary aspect of it, but to give it the credibility that it will need. The more visible a book is to your employer, the more serious it is going to look. Having even a handful of reviews (organically written by the way) can give your book more visibility. Never buy reviews, it’s unethical and unprofessional!
Consider using your expertise to contribute as a guest blogger as well. Use your book as a platform to gain some authority and credibility in your subject field and eventually your book will have enough buzz around it to where a Google search will reveal that it wasn’t just thrown up overnight to look impressive.
Writing a book as a resume can be an exciting and fun endeavor, so try to enjoy the experience! What you don’t want to do is put undue pressure on yourself as you write. Never think “If this book isn’t perfect, I’ll never get a job!” instead relax and have fun with what you’re doing. Writing a book can have its hard moments, for sure, but it doesn’t need to be stressful at all! Don’t let the pressure of performance get you down, remember, your work is here to serve you!

The propulsion system that drives the commercial spaceship Russ uses in his trip to Mars from Earth utilizes Einstein’s theory of relativity. Those of you of a technical mindset should find the propulsion system interesting.
The technique used by Russ to find the missing person should educate persons interested in detectives and their methods.
