Laura (apenandzen) do you read?

You people on here put me to shame, finishing several books per week! What the heck?

I'm curious about how many pages you read on an average day.

message 2: by Heather (new)

Heather For me it really depends upon the book I'm reading. Right now I'm trying to average 30 pages a day with East of Eden because I need to have it read by the 16th for my book club. I'm having a hard time meeting that goal because of my work load right now. Some books, though, it's easy to 50-80 pages a day - i.e. Koontz or Patterson. But, it all depends on how many papers I have to grade. Some days I'm lucky to read 2 pages.

message 3: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
it defintely depends on whether it is a work day or not. And if Im out running around... I try to read a good 50 pages or so on my off days, and I tend to get no more than 10 on the days I work, reading poops me out after being gone from home for 13 hours.... egads!

message 4: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Depends on the book and when i am reading it. Today I read already more than one hundred pages but soemtimes jsut 30. But I am reading a lot since I am back from the Uk. Am finsihing my firth book in two weeks, which is normallone or two books I read in tat time.

message 5: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments it depends on the book but I try to go for 50-100 pages a day

message 6: by Sarenna (new)

Sarenna (djsthree) | 63 comments I go through about a book or two a week. If I'm listening to an audio book, I will usually go through two books a week (one print, one audio). I would guess my average is about 30-40 pages a day, but that's a random guess.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Laura, Amount depends on what else needs doing. Annoying things like work and sleep seem to interrupt me. Oh and I get sucked in by the dreaded TV in the corner.

message 8: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments I don't know how many pages but I usually read @ least 45 mins a day...sometimes more depending on what I am reading. If I were to guess though I would probably say 30-50 pages a day on average maybe.

message 9: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) It depends on the kind of book for me, too. Something more mindless, I can fly through 50 pages in an hour. A classic or something heavier, and I may read only 10-20 in an hour. I can usually squeeze in around 1 1/2 hours of reading on most days (always interrupted of course), and I have a daytime book and a nighttime book, so that time gets divided between the two. So basically I'm lucky to finish one book every couple of weeks!

message 10: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard I average about 50 pages a train ride, so that is around 100 pages a day. I generally read a book every 3-4 days depending on its length, sometimes more if it's an easy read (i.e. Nicholas Sparks, Anita Shreve, etc.) or if my train is delayed.

message 11: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I can read anywhere between 50-150 pages a day. It depends on my son's mood, the events of the day and the book I am reading.

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I try to read at least 100 pages a day. Even if it is spread between more than one book. I've been pretty good lately and reading more so I get through 300+ pages a days. Sometimes I'll settle into a book and never stop, finishing the thing in one sitting. The other day I sat down to read Oryx and Crake and just never got up except to refill the coffee (and let it go again, of course lol). But I don't have a job or anything right now and my husband is out of town so he can't drag me out of the apartment to do stuff. So I read more.

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Lucky you Abigail! Sometimes I wish I had those problems!! :)

message 14: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Abigail, me too. I have an extended holiday which has been really long so the only thing I was doing it looks is mainly reading! I never thought I would manage but this way I just finished book number 51 since january 1st.

message 15: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments I would say the number of pages depends on 2 things:

1) The type of book
2) The number of pages left until the end

If the book is in my "comfort genre" (mystery/suspense/thriller/horror) I can read faster, say 50-100 pages per day. If not, I'll probably get between 25-50, no more.

The closer I get to the end of the book, the more likely I am to keep reading past when I might have stopped before. Usually, if I have ~100 pages left til the end of a book I'll stay up and finish.

On the weekends I get more read, too.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

The number of pages varies on what is going on at home. I would say on average week I read about 300-400.

message 17: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments It really depends on what I am doing during the day. I usually get 20 or 30 pages done per day no matter what. On less busy days, I read about 100 pages.

message 18: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments Ditto Jessica. Although, if a book isn't striking me very well, then I usually read less, and on the other hand, if I'm really enjoying it, I'll probably stay up all night reading and triple the amount of pages.

JG (Introverted Reader) I'm the same as everyone else--it depends on the book. And also, like Julianne said, how close to the end I am. But I actually get more reading done at work. I work off a pager, so in between calls I mostly get to sit around and do whatever I want--read! On weekends I'm busy with my husband or else he has the tv on and I can't concentrate.

message 20: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathygreytfriend) | 18 comments Funny, I just read Succubus Blues for the Urban Fantasy book group and there was something in it about this topic. The lead character has a very favorite author who's books don't get published nearly fast enough for her. So she makes herself only read 5 pages of each new book a day, to make it last longer. While I appreciate the sentiment, and have felt the combined pleasure and letdown of finishing a wonderful book all too often, can you imagine having that kind of self control? I sure couldn't!

More directly on topic, I'd say I usually read between 50-150 pages a day. But I'm not working at the moment, so that makes it a lot easier to stay up late reading. If the book is lighter and more breezy I'll even read more, but a more "dense" book will be much slower, of course.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Depends on the book, the author, and the style of writing. I usually read a few hundred pages a day.

message 22: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments same as everyone else...depends on the mood I'm in, depends on the book, depends on how busy I am...........lala

message 23: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Does anyone set reading goals? Like X books per week, X books per year?

I'm thinking about doing this in 2009, now that I have so many in my TBR.

message 24: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
I have and Oct to Oct goal (dont ask.. ha ha). Last years was 50 books and I read over 70~~ Whoot Whoot. This Oct I set a goal of 75 in the next year.... So far I am at 9, I think.... So not a bad start.

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I was thinking about this again...I read even more when I was working overnight and had a working walkman. I would read at home (over a summer break, not so much during school) and listen to audio books at work. I don't know about the pages, but I was keeping track for a summer reading contest at the library and I had read 21 books in 6 weeks. One of those was that huge book about the Mississippi governor that they just made into a movie...I forget the title. I wasn't even paying attention to how much I was reading it just happened. *chuckles* It's almost embarressing. X)

message 26: by Heather (new)

Heather My goal is pretty simple - read at least 52 books a year (Jan. to Jan.) for an average of at least one a week. I usually read more than that however. This year I've read 60 and still have two months to go, but my reading has slowed down a bit.

message 27: by Julianne (last edited Nov 05, 2008 06:25PM) (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Laura,

My reading goal is not based on # of books. I gave myself a goal to read one fiction, one non-fiction, and one classic per month. The rest of the books I read are usually fiction (and recently, most fit into the fall reading challenge here at TNBBC).

During the first half of the year I averaged about 6 books a month. Somehow, since August I've managed to bump that up and I'm finishing close to 10 books a month! Though, I don't think any of those books have exceeded 450 pages (so, no massive S. Kings or Ken Follets in there).

message 28: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Laura,

I was thinking of setting a reading goal starting in Jan. 2009 too. Not sure what my goal will be yet but thought it would be fun to make one and try to achieve it. :~)

message 29: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Heather, I also like the goal of 52 books a year. I fell short last year at 45 (but it was my senior year of college so I had a lot going on) but this year I'm already at 47, so I feel I will meet that goal!

message 30: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I had a goal through Shelfari: read fifty books in one year. And I made it!!! I am reading number 52 now.

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) It depends on the book for me too. The average is 60 to 75 pages a day. But this morning the book I was reading flew by and I read 65 pages in about 30 min.

I can read 2 books a week no problem, I also do the 50 book a year thing.

message 32: by Laura (last edited Nov 06, 2008 06:54AM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Congratulations to everyone on meeting / exceeding their goals! You guys really inspire me to read more.

I think Julianne's idea appeals to me the most - one fiction, one non-fiction, and one classic per month. This way, you're gonna have some fun, learn something, and I'm always wanting to add classics to my "already read" list, so that sounds like a plan.

I am somehow always drawn to those looooooong books though (like Jonathan Strange), and so I thought if I was gonna keep track for '09, maybe I should count the pages read instead of the # of books.

Anybody else do that?

message 33: by Stef (new)

Stef (buch_ratte) | 650 comments I read 20 to 30 minutes each evening before turning off the light to sleep. Most of the time I read two or three chapters of a book, depends on the length of the chapters.

message 34: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I do the same thing as Stef. I try to make a point of reading for at least half hour every night before going to bed. Depending on length of the chapters and how engrossed I am I can read anywhere from 1 to 3 chapters. When I have more time, like on the weekends or when I don't have school work I can get a lot more reading done. Due to school and work I'm averaging about 1 book every 2 weeks, which is slow for me. Normally I read 1-2 books a week.

message 35: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments You see it all depends of the kid of book too. For the last two days I read Book of the Deadby Patricia Cornwell and finished more than 400 or 500 pages in two days. Now I am reading Death in Venice and I have only read almost 30 pages today and that was even an effort.

message 36: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Laura,

That's exactly why I made that goal for myself.

BTW, I read Pillars of the Earth in July, and "in my mind" I counted that as 3 books ;-)

message 37: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Gotcha. Makes total sense, Julianne. How long have you been doing that? More than just last year?

message 38: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments I set a goal to read 50 books this year...I have come to the realization that it is not going to happen seen as I have only read 33 so far. However, 33 is good for me...I have read more this year than I have in the past 2-3 yrs combined probably.

Julianne- I do like your idea and maybe will try that for 2009...

message 39: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Laura,

I actually started it as a "goal" in August, but in retrospect I had been reading a non-fiction each month since April of 08. I really wanted to get into the classics (seeing all these lists and stuff on GR made me realize all I'm missing).

Jaime,

Congrats on your reading improvement. I feel the same way about 2008. I'm reading twice as much a month now than I was at the beginning of the year. Don't know if it's TNBBC (having more that I know I want to read), or that I'm buying more books, or maybe I've just found my rhythm.

message 40: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments So far this year I have read 81 books. This is the first time I have ever kept up with it. I do not have a goal, just to read as many as I can get my hands on!!

message 41: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I seem to read in spurts. I get a reading "itch" and do nothing else. Since I don't work, I spend at least 8 hours a day. So, since in October, I was reading a book every day to day and a half.

All the reading started giving me a headache, so I have slowed down. I have been reading the same book for 3 days, and it is only 400 pages. WIth the holidays comeing, I have to concentrate on other things. So probaby about 100 pages a day until the new year.

I like the idea I have seen of reading a book by and author for each letter of the alphabet. I'm not sure I will get that done this year, but next year for sure.

message 42: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Lisa,

Yeah the author alphabet challenge is pretty cool. I stuck to the last name for the letter, and what I found was that there were some really common letters I had not covered. And others that were totally saturated. But I did it retrospectively (looked back at what I've read in 2008), but I only had like 8 letters not covered.

Thanks to the Book Thief for covering "Z" for me!

message 43: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Julianne, nice idea to read those three kinds of books every month.
Do you also manage to do it every month or not always?

message 44: by Arminius (new)

Arminius I read about 20 to 30 pages a day. It should pick up when winter kicks in here. I try to always be reading one book. When I finish one, I move to the next.

message 45: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Lori, you are my kind of person. Since I read several books at a time, I usually try to read the one I am furthest along on at least 50 pages a day. Others, that are more daunting (500 pages or more) I may do 10-20 pages a day in addition to the other books. At least that way I am still making headway and "voila" all of a sudden I seem to be finishing those too.

message 46: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Ann - your number 81 does not surprise me at all, as you are constantly in the What RU Reading thread saying you've finished one. You amaze me. Do you keep a reading journal, or is your count just from reviewing your GR read list? <<>>

Julianne - your reading method has def. inspired me, and I'm going to start on it by Jan 1, if not sooner. I've found that when you turn off the TV, you can get a lot more reading done! LOL And for a still-recovering insomniac like me, reading is SO much more conducive to a good night's sleep than crappy old TV anyhow.

message 47: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I love keeping a lsit of the books I read. It is great when you finished your book to add it to your list. Mine is in a small, lovely yellow book. One side the books I read by year and from the other side starting my (huge)wish list.

message 48: by Carol (new)

Carol | 18 comments I am a night reader. Was poor growing up, so mom's idea of a weekend trip was to the library. So, I simply learned to entertain myself with books. Even as I grew and became very invovled in athletics, I still read every night. So thanks Mom!
I would say anywhere from 30 to 200 pages a night. All depends on when the eyes shut.
Just like mom, I fall asleep with the light on almost every night.

message 49: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Welcome back, Ken. Wondered what happened to you, but have to agree. I need to limit my time to get other things done. I think this GR thing can be quite a balancing act, but a nice one.

message 50: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Ken, you must be the only dad in the world who doesn't mind he has to wait for his kids at school!!!!!

Great way of entertaining Carol!
