30.1 One Author – Two Series
For this task you will read 2 books from 2 different series written by the SAME author under the same name.

Book 1: Read any book in any series by an author who has written at least 2 different series.

Book 2: Read the FIRST book in a different series written by the same author of your first book.

For example: Many of us enjoy the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, but did you know that she has also written 3 other series? So you could read Smokin' Seventeen in the Stephanie Plum series for book 1 AND the first book in one of her other series for book 2.

A series will be defined as at least 3 published books with the same series name. The author must have the same name for both books. Pseudonyms are not allowed. Both books must be identified as part of two different series by Goodreads (Series Name, #).

30.2 Small Changes or Simple Swaps
They say that making small changes or simple swaps can be an easy and effective way to get big results and help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions. For this task read TWO books.

First, read a book of your choice.

Then, for your second book, select a word in the title or subtitle of your first book and make one of the following changes. Read a book with that new word in the title or subtitle.
A. add one letter or character to that word: If your first book is A Duty to the Dead, dead + r = dread. So your second book could be Rides a Dread Legion. Or “the” + m = them, so your second book could be Say You're One of Them. Adding an "s" to get a plural works. Adding an apostrophe to turn the word into a possessive (ex. from Scottish Brides to The Bride's Baby) will work, too.
B. subtract one letter or character from that word: If your first book is A Duty to the Dead, dead - e = dad. So your second book could be Sh*t My Dad Says or you could subtract a "t" from the word “the” = he and read All He Ever Wanted. You may not subtract a letter from a one-letter word.
C. swap one letter or character in the word for a different letter: A Duty to the Dead swap the letter "d" in dead with an "l" to get lead and read Bury the Lead or swap the "A" with an "I" for I Capture the Castle. Letters must appear in the same order as in the original word (Ex. "the" could swap into: tie, toe, she).
Required: Please indicate the word and the change made

30.3 Double or Nothing
For this task, you need to roll two dice and read 2 books. As well as meeting the criteria below, one of the books you read must have been published for the first time in or before 1975. The other should be first published after 1975.

Book A If the first die is even, read a book whose author's first and last names start with the same letter (Ex: Thomas Tryon). Middle names should be ignored. If a name is hyphenated, only the first letter of the hyphenated name should be used.

If the first die is odd, read a book by an author whose name contains double consonants. The letters can be in the first or last name, but they must be side by side (Ex: Jennifer Chiaverini).

Book B If the second die is even, read a book with double letters in the title (Ex: A Room with a View).

If the second die is odd, read a book that contains consecutive words that begin with the same letter in the title. The words must appear next to each other. Examples: Faking Faith, A Christmas Carol, Success Secrets of Sherlock Holmes: Life Lessons from the Master Detective. You may use titles and subtitles, but series names do not count.

Required: State what numbers you rolled when you post the completed task.

30.4 Christmas Caroling
Let's go caroling! For this task, choose 1 or 2 Christmas carols from this list: Popular Christmas Carols. Then read two books with two different words from the carol(s) title in the title or subtitle (NOT series titles) of the book. Articles (a, an, the), pronouns (he, she, I, we, etc.) and prepositions (list of English prepositions) may NOT be used - "important" words only. Plurals, possessives, and variations are okay but words within words will not work. Hyphenated words (like red-nosed) may be used separately (red or nosed, for example).

So, for example, you could choose the carol "We Three Kings Of Orient Are" for your carol and read Murder on the Orient Express and A Clash of Kings. Or you could choose "We Three Kings Of Orient Are" and "Little Drummer Boy" and read A Clash of Kings and Drummer In the Dark.

Required: Identify the Christmas carol or carols used when posting.

30.5 - Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover
Whenever I am at the bookstore, I'm attracted to the books that have the really attractive covers and end up buying them. Sometimes they live up to the beauty of the cover and other times they don't.

For this task, you will try to not judge a book by its cover, or will you? This is a 2 book task - flip 2 coins by hitting flip again 1 time.

If you get 2 heads, read 2 books with covers that you love.
If you get 2 tails, read 2 books with covers that you dislike or that you wouldn't normally pick up.
If you get 1 heads and 1 tails, read 1 book with a cover you love and 1 book with a cover you don't like.

Required: Include the results of your coin toss and provide a link to the title or cover (preferred) when you post. Tell us what you liked/didn't like about the cover when you selected the book and answer the question - was the book better than the cover? Or was the cover better than the book?

30.6 Unique Winter Holidays
For this this task, you will roll 2 dice. You will then read 2 books written by one or two new-to-you authors (see below) that corresponds to the numbers you rolled. If you roll doubles, you would do the same option twice.

If you roll:
1. January is National Soup Month (USA): Read a book with a title or subtitle (no series titles) that includes a word found in the name of a soup. Plurals, possessives, and variations are fine. This list of soups might help. Example: Twenty Chickens For A Saddle would work for chicken noodle soup.
Required: State the name of the soup you used when you post.

2. January 6th is Cuddle Up Day: Read a cozy mystery. The crime-solver in a cozy mystery is usually a woman who is an amateur sleuth. Try cozy-mystery.com for ideas.

3. January 12th is Feast of Fabulous Wild Men Day: Read a book with a male (preferably a HOT one ;-)) on the cover. Required: Post a link or cover when claiming points.

4. January 31st is National Backward Day: Read a book whose author's initial is reversed from yours. Disregard middle initials. For authors with hyphenated names, like Josh Kilmer-Purcell, only the K in his last name would count. Example: My name is Suzanne M so I would have to read a book written by someone whose initials are MS. Required: State your initials when claiming points.

5. February 8th is Boy Scout Day: Read a book with a title or subtitle (no series titles) that contains a word found in the name of a Boy Scout merit badge. Plurals and possessives are fine, but no other variations are allowed. OR read a book about the subject of one of the merit badges.

6.February 13th is Get a Different Name Day: Choose a first name other than your own that you really like. Read a book by a an author with that first name. You would be choosing another name for yourself, so the name should work for your gender.

Your first book must be written by a new-to-you author. If you like that author, you may read another book written by that same author. If you don't like the author of the first book (or if you just want to broaden your horizons), you may pick another new-to-you author for the second book.

Required: Identify the numbers you rolled when you post.

30.7 - A Series in Your Stocking
Celebrate the holiday season by reading one Christmas/Winter Holiday book from a normally non-Christmas/holiday series AND read a non-Christmas/holiday book from the same series. To qualify as a Christmas/Winter Holiday book, the title, cover, or description must make it obvious that the plot involves one of the winter holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, Valentine's Day). Compilations will be accepted for this challenge. However, the entire compilation must consist of Christmas/Winter Holiday stories, the series numbers must be listed on the book’s Goodreads page, and the second book must come from one of the series in the compilation. Stand-alone short stories will not be accepted.

Examples:
A Virgin River Christmas by Robyn Carr AND any other book from her Virgin River series.
All Through the Night: A Troubleshooter Christmas by Suzanne Brockmann AND any other book from her Troubleshooters series.
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett AND any other book from his Discworld series
Hercule Poirot's Christmas AND any other book in the Hercule Poirot series
Wolfsbane and Mistletoe by Various Authors (Includes: Sookie Stackhouse #8.1, Kitty Norville #2.5, Cassandra Palmer #3.2, and Mercedes Thompson #1.5) AND any other book from Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, Vaughn's Kitty Norville series, Chances's Cassandra Palmer series or Briggs's Mercedes Thompson series.

Some lists to get you started. Make sure the book you pick is from a non-Christmas series and otherwise fits the task:
Christmas Mysteries
Best Seasonal Romance
YA Holiday Novels
Christmas Mystery Book List
Valentine's Day & St. Patrick's Day Book List -- Be Careful! St. Patrick's Day is NOT considered a winter holiday for the purposes of this task.

#5 - book 1
in
I flipped two heads. I love the cover of Blowin' in the Wind, Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan . The boy with the guitar looks so much like my grandson, whose name is Dylan by the way.

This book proves Dylan's songs can reach all generations. Every time Bob comes to town while on his never-ending tour, I am at his show. I have seen fans of all ages at these events.

The illustrations follow the lyrics with a small boy and girl. They remind me of my grandchildren … they actually look like them. Each page is illustrated to reflect the lyrics. For example, a cannon draped in flags from various countries complements “Yes, ’n’ how many times must the cannonballs fly … Before they’re forever banned?” The flags reminded me of how many nations have been involved in wars, past and present. Still the question of when there will be peace is yet to be answered. The white dove flies, a symbol of peace, and we can only imagine a harmonious existence that seems to forever escape reality.

A paper airplane can be seen drifting across each page. Jon Muth explains that this is a visual metaphor for how an answer can blow in the wind. You can't see an answer when it is spoken, and spoken words can't last without being recorded. In the end the pages are covered with a dozen or more white paper airplanes sailing through the air. Could there be more than one answer? I think a hidden message might be that it takes everyone to work together to find the truth.

#3A My first dice was a 4, so I read Lisa Loeb's Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs (24 pages)

I gave this book to my granddaughter for Christmas and we listened to the accompanying CD over and over and over while driving between Texas and Arkansas. Her favorite song is “I'm a Little Coconut.” Her brother liked “Fried Ham” best, and he was so funny singing in his opera voice. After four hours of silly songs, I think I have them all memorized and even know the order they play! Lisa Loeb is one of my favorite singers from the 90s. I'm glad she's still around. She has quite an imagination and the sound effects in these songs make them even sillier. The songs also have related activities making this a really FUN book. My favorite song is “Opposite Day.”

My second book was a 2 ... Part B is still to come

Kathy (kdcraterattnet) | 116 comments 30.2 "Love In the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. pages 422. Florentino Ariza is madly in love at the first sight of Fermina Daza. Daily he sits on a park bench pretending to read a book just to get a glance of her as she is chaparoned to school. He writes profusely love letters to her, serenades her,in hopes she will notice him and return her love. However, fate hands a heavy blow when Fermina decides to marry the distinquished Dr. Juvenal Urbino. Florentino is devastated and suffers physically and emotionally for practically the rest of his life. He tries to relieve his long-lost passion of possessing her by investing in countless sexual liaisons and adventures. Only when old age and death lurks its ugly head do Florentino and Fermina mature to their original fulfilling love affair. The author's delicate and exquisite writing style rescues this story from the fate of a soap opera. I actually found the book poetic and humorous.

Next I turned the "In" to "I'm" And started reading Ellen Degeneres's book ,"Seriously...I"m Kidding".pages 241. Seriously, I wonder if Ellen ever has a lucid moment in her brain. Each chapter is a small sound-bite of some momentary thought form of some truth only to be shattered by some fleeting humorous side note. It tells nothing of great merit but is a quick comical, laugh, cleverly written.

Lynn | 203 comments OK Suzanne, since you keep bugging me to post what I've read, here I go. . .

30.1 ONE AUTHOR – TWO SERIES
Book 1: Pay Dirt: Mrs. Murphy Series Rita Me Brown (288 pages} I was going through books from my overloaded shelves to make room for new ones and came across several books in this series. Of course being a cat lover and mystery fan, this meant I had to sit down and read each one before I could continue my project!

Book 2: Outfoxed: Jane Austen Series Rita Mae Brown (432 pages)
This series revolves around fox hunting
Jane "Sister" Arnold, an expert hunter who understands animals as well as she understands people, has been master of the hunt club for decades and has earned the respect and loyalty of the small Virginia community. Now in her 70s, she knows she must plan for the hunt club's future and nominate a joint-master -- a position of the highest honor in hunting society. As in her Mrs. Murphy series, animals this time foxes, hounds, and a crow, play an important part in solving the murder of a fellow hunter.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing: Where ANGELS Walk (Joan Wester Anderson) 256 pages
A collection of true stories attesting that heavenly beings are very much with us -- combating evil, bringing news, warning of danger, and consoling us in our suffering.

The first book in FForde’s Nursery Crime Series. Inspector Jack Spratt is investigating the murder of nursery celebrity Humpty Dumpty, found shattered to death beneath a wall in a shabby area of town.
I like the quote from USA Today:
"As if the Marx brothers were let loose in the children's section of a strange bookstore."

Lynn | 203 comments 30.7 A SERIES IN YOUR STOCKING
The Christmas Quilt Jennifer Chiaverini 323 pages

Unpacking decorations, Sarah discovers a curious Christmas quilt. Begun in seasonal fabrics and patterns, the quilt remains unfinished. As they examine the quilt, memories of Christmas past emerge.

The Union Quilters Jennifer Chiaverini (352 pages)
In 1862, the men of Water's Ford, Pennsylvania, rally to President Lincoln's call while Dorothea Granger organizes her friends to sew for the Union. A good historical fiction about the civil war – addresses pacifism, Southern sympathizers and racial discrimination in the Union Army and their effect on families and communities.

B. even dice"Till We Have Faces"by C.S. Lewis.pages313. I never knew he wrote a retelling of Cupid and Psyche myth. This is a great read. It is full of hidden spiritual and mystic meaning of love. Some say it is C.S.'s search for God. One could also compare it to Beauty and the Beast only with a more modern spin.

Once again the Dalai Lama writes promoting basic human values. It is a call for tolerance, patience, compassion, kindness towards one another. It is so convincing. I wish it was available to more readers.
"When Pigs Fly" by Jennifer Cooke Rinehart and Gretchen Cooke. pages 180. This is a true story about Jennifer who received a liver transplant to save her life. Part of the story is told by her mother who relays the hardship of raising a sick child; the other part is told by Jennifer herself of all her emotional and health issues that she had to overcome.

A. Winter in the title, set in winter, snowy winter scene, winter holiday (Dec. – Feb.)
The Winters in Bloom (Lisa Tucker) 336 pages
The book centers around a single day in the life of the Winter family The first chapter sets the rest of the book up. It's told from Michael’s point of view, in 3rd person, and really shows his life so far. He lives a life filled with worries and doubts and not the life a 5 year old should be having. The rest of the book jumps between the character's points of view and tells both the present and past events. It shows each of the character's connection to each other and gives the reason they act the way they do.

Lynn | 203 comments 30.2 Small Changes or Simple Swaps
The English Patient Michael Ondaatje 3.78/ 83%
(move from 35.1)
The book is a web of memories,. The book weaves back and forth as memories reveal themselves in dream-like narratives. Although there are sections where the descriptions are absolutely wonderful, the first part of the book was so disjointed I never quite knew what was going on.

Although I usually like books which contain flashbacks and complex plots, this is one book I did not enjoy. I only finished it for this challenge and to mark it off my 1001 list.

As one poster said,
“Thank God that's over! What a difficult, frustrating book!”

However, I am glad I didn’t judge Ondaatje based on this one book. Although it follows the same writing style, I thoroughly enjoyed The Cat’s Table, which was named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2011 by the New York Times.

Lynn | 203 comments 30.3 Double or Nothing
Book A: Rolled a 1: If the first die is odd, read a book by an author whose name contains double consonants.
The Shadow of Your Smile Mary Higgins Clark 319 pages
Follows the life of Monica Farrell, a talented pediatric doctor. She’s the heiress to a huge amount of money, but she doesn't know it. Her relatives are willing to go to great lengths (even murder) to ensure she never finds out.
THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE is filled many characters that at first seem to have nothing in common with each other, but as you continue you realize that they all play a part in the story.
Each chapter switches between the different characters’ viewpoints, which I find interesting. The short chapters make it easy to stop often without losing track of what is happening.

Jason F. Wright (228 pages)
Tells the story of John Bevan, who was orphaned when he was born after his mother died in a car crash. He is adopted by a couple who owns an apple orchard. Married and the father of a young daughter, he finally finds the traditional family he lacked as an orphaned child. All that disappears when a fatal car accident steals away his wife-and the unborn child she carried. Filled with sorrow, John withdraws from life and love. As he cares for the roadside crosses he erected at the scene of the accident, he encounters a stranger who helps him rediscover the joy of life, love, and family.

The cover and title intrigued me, due to my love of gardening and Christian beliefs.
Not what I expected, by an OK story.

Go Audry! Can you send me the author's name? I'd like to add it to the group's shelf, but I can't find it on goodreads.
