Twilight
discussion
Why do you think people hate twilight so much?

I also had the same experience. When you're young it just seems like one big fantasy and its easy to get sucked in. But in the end..the behavior these characters act out is so wrong, and in my eyes this series portrays in a good way what no one would stand for in a relationship. Thats why i feel a little sad that it is as popular as it is and so many readers take them so seriously cause a lot of the fans honestly dont see all the underlying psychological issues that makes this book feel so wrong for a lot of people.
And not only that but Twilight has even sparked a new growing trend of Paranormal Romance books and a good majority of which have the same kinds of characters. A dominating alpha male who says "You are mine, i want you so just give in to me". And a weak minded female who puts up with all the crap "in the name of love". This would never be appealing in a real relationship.

Yeah i know i love Russell. xxx

1. Bella is so frigging annoying!
2. It's hard to be in Bella's head for too long since she's so annoying and negative.
3. Bella is weak
4. A lot of people love it so of course a lot of people are going to hate it.
And it's funny for me to be writing this because I actually like Twilight quite a bit I give the movie 5 stars and the book 4.

... Totally agree!, Olivia! :)

Yes...yes, compared to MANY other books the Twilight series is a piss poor excuse for a piece of literature, if it can even be called real literature at all. I think this picture encapsulates almost all that you have written

Sorry,no offense meant, Twilight lovers but SIMPLE AS. END OF. ;) XXX

I'm afraid that yes they ARE emo, emo is short for emotional, technically its a type of music, but stereotypically it is known as a person who is overly pessamistic, dramatic, socially awkward and have suicidal tendancies. And yes almost ALL of Meyer's characters behave in this way at least a few times.
(Also to anyone reading this please do not get snarky about my definition of emo, im not saying it's the real one, as i know there are different variations, so please leave the angry snark at home please, and by home i mean in your head, because i DONT CARE! i mean that in the nicest way possible ;) xxx

I think this is one of the best posts I ever read about Twilight. Thank you. xD

VAMPIRES AND WEREWOLVES SOUND STUPID!!!!"
If u haven't read the books then you don't know a damn thing, I beleve it has something to do with Kristin Stewarts acting(I hate her) and because the movie got a lot of attention, most everyone who hates the books has never read the books.

Yes, because that's the real reason why we all hate Twilight. By your logic, all of us Twilight hates should hate JK Rowling even more seeing how she's richer than the Queen of England. In fact, not just JK Rowling but every single successful author out there... >_>
That's sarcasm if you didn't catch it.

Edward's stalker-ish behavior creeped me out and most of the time I wanted to smack Bella.

"Sarah wrote: "The biggest problem with Twilight is the weakness of Bella's character. She lacks self-reliance, she's dishonest, and she's a bad daughter. She puts her own desires and drives above t..."
I agree with Sarah for sure. I know she didn't really have a father/daughter relationship and all but it really showed lack of respect for parents/adults when she would do her own thing. I loved the story though. I didn't like Jacob till the movie! lol

Did you even read my comment under it about me wanting people like YOU to leave your snark to yourself I actually PUT that I know there are different definitions of emo and that it was origionally about music, plus bella and Edward were stereotypically emo, key word being stereotypically, there is nothing wrong with being different I happen to be rather different myself ok, usually I'm described as mental but you know it's the same concept so calm yourself and don't be so serious about some funny pictures, it's my opinion and I'm entitled to it just as you are, take a joke yeah otherwise life can get way too fucked way too fast trust me xxx it's so not worth it to argue about a bunch of sparkly vamps ;)

/Orz.. The fail logic coming from this thread about jealous authors and/or readers. Stephen King and Anne Rice were the ones that said that, no? I'd understand if you guys don't have the reading comprehension to follow anything more than Twilight.

I know this is off topic but you sound just like my mother! :)

Hi Molly,
I am probably near the age of your Mother! Back in the 60's I actually lost sleep over the really silly, to me, scary theatrics.
However, I also cried every time Lassie got hurt. I suppose I have a tender heart? Oddly enough, I have listened to all the CD's from Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Chronicle Series. Sookie Stackhouse is a "hoot". I enjoyed almost all of them. Now they are getting nasty. Can't explain, it just is what it is....I do wish I knew how my mind does differentiate between what I do like and what is totally of no interest.

I was actually referring to new authors, not the likes of Stephen King and Anne Rice. I cut my teeth on Stephen King. He is the master. And, no one could ever come close to Anne Rice. But, I think there is an element of jealousy among struggling authors. As for reading comprehension, most people have varying tastes. One day they might be in the mood for Twilight; the next, they pick up War and Peace. I don't think it's fair to insult a reader's intelligence just because they happen to have enjoyed the Twilight series.

wow me 2 but then i was like uhh

Of course not. There are loads of people who loved Twilight. I liked it too. The people who don't like it are entitled to their opinions. There are many reasons people don't like it--some don't like Stephenie's writing, some don't like the way vampires are portrayed, some don't like the message it sends to young women. With any book, there will be people who like it and people who don't. I just wish we could have a discussion about the merits of a book without resorting to personal insults and name calling.

WOW first of all i never said ANYTHING horrible about you,i said that everyone has a right to their own opinion, get over yourself, you have no right to call someone a freak just because they have a different opinion to you, thats just mean. Secondly obviously you DO take it seriously or you wouldnt have gotten so snarky and prissy about it, end of, now leave me alone and go be nasty to someone else, or better yet not at all.
Also for the last bloody time i KNOW you know what emo means, all imeant is that people have different views on what it means to them, CALM DOWN! And i am mentaltastic and proud of the fact dont be so judgy.

Sweetie? ha ha, jesus you do know that makes you sound like one of those stereotypically bitchy girls in chick flicks, not being mean jsut saying sorry, im trying to be nice about it, your the one saying nasty stuff like calling people freaks, now seriously stop it, im sorry if you feel i've offended you, i never meant to do that ok. x
Also i think it's cool that your ready to fight for a book you like, i'd do the same for my favourite books, so can we stop this arguing now. ;)

Well if your going to comment on a topical thing you kind of have to be prepared for this stuff, i'd stay clear if this sort of thing upsets you, but you also upset me too and im 17 so.....meh my problem is that im overly defensive,im more of a fighter than the crying thing though. You just have to take the crap, it cant hurt you if you dont let it, Goodreads is normally a really nice place, thats why i like it. xxx

Don't cry, Kaylee. Sometimes discussions get out of hand when people are passionate about a topic. I don't think anyone meant to be mean to you personally. People just wanted to defend their own views. I'm impressed that you spend lots of time reading. I have a daughter your age who likes Twilight too. I don't mean to sound like a mom, but you should always be careful when participating in any online discussion. Keep reading!

Sure, we could talk about how in college yesterday i put down in an eveluation of a subject that sometimes my head hurts and i can imagine teeny tiny elves in my head tapping my brain with spoons, my teacher asked me what kind of spoon and i said clay ones, my imagination is VERY strong sometimes, like id see a wierdly shaped tree and then id make up a story in my head about the tree, possibly involving a brick genie, dont ask it will warp your fragile mind brain thingy, dont listen to me im a little fraked. Either that or ducks, i really do not like them, i have this theory that they are EVIL, im not sure why though then again i do like the blue ones. ;) x

I don't know about ducks, but geese are evil. For sure. I've been chased and attacked by geese before. Beware the evil geese.

You'd think so, but really its just a load of teenagers talking about some bloke who thought marrying loads of wives was cool,'kwasy religious man' his full title, not really, but it should be! (sociology), and how to use 'fauncy' words (note posh voice used;) and weird baby books with names like 'What to do when daddy is drinking again' (english language/boring for humans everywhere, but needed to get into english uni course), and a whole lot about a bloody red rock symbolising sexy times in a book about death and war (english lit), the most fun time's are our teacher mr.Sparrrow (note not real name i just call him that because he looks a hell of a lot like a pirate in a teddy tie) xxx ;)

Bella is hilarious in this show.

Thats fecking hilarious, i love it! X

I majored in English long enough to learn that most people that actually can read and enjoy the classics don't usually like Twilight. If they do, then that doesn't usually last very long.
However, considering the main target group--teenage girls excluding women aged 30+ (in my area anyway), don't usually read regularly besides Twilight and its devil spawn, 50 Shades. Not to mention that the logic coming from the fans in this particular thread reflect on their thought process and reasoning. Especially the posters that tried to pass it off of jealousy towards particular characters, etc.
However, new and struggling authors, they may or may not envy Meyers but you should have clarified it better in case of confusion.

You're right. I should have been clearer. I think a lot of struggling writers would envy Meyer's success, or at the very least, her bank account. (BTW, love what Stephen King said about Twilight. Too true.) Twilight's target audience is for readers much younger than me, so it's difficult for me to speak about Twilight with the same level of passion you might find from someone my daughter's age. My mom is a great lover of the classics and enjoyed Twilight, so you just never know where you might find a Twilight fan. Haven't read 50 Shades. I just can't do it.

I don't find these statement to have any real basis in fact. I know plenty of people who liked Twilight and read classical books as well (myself included). I don't know how an almost English degree made this clear to you. Can you clarify this relationship?
Also, when you pass judgements on fans on this thread, I'm curious as to whether you've read all the posts here.

Katy wrote: "Imo, I think the movies made a joke out of the books. The books are actually pretty good but the movies are just sooooo bad. They really cheapened the story."
Now that's where your wrong the movies did a great job, but New Moon sucked. I really enjoyed how that did Breaking Dawn Part 1.

I was speaking from personal experience, hence the part about me mentioning at least my area anyway. I'm just saying of all the English majors that I know enjoy the classics well enough and that they don't like Twilight. I may have generalized in my earlier post but not that post.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but you actually said that most people who read classics do not like Twilight. The part about "in my area" was when you generalized about women who liked the book (you were saying they are essentially non-readers besides Twilight).
I don't know about how small a group you're talking about when you say "in my area", but around here there are many people who enjoy Twilight and classics, enjoyed Twilight and have English degrees, and continue to enjoy Twilight while reading other books. It's rather a rude (and definitely a faulty) assumption to claim otherwise.

I agree. I am a big fan of classics...especially English Lit. and I enjoyed the twilight books.

Now that's where your ..."
There is no "wrong" when giving an opinion =)

Before the movie came out, a couple years ago when i was around 16 my friend had given me these books to read that she said she really liked. So i picked up Twilight and immediately got hooked and read it very quickly. Only a few days later i came to my friend again demanding that i get the next book and i devoured it just as hungrily. The same happened with the third book. These books became like crack for me i needed more and more and honestly, i didn't even really know why i liked them as much as i had until the movie came out. But i'll get to that in a bit.
The thing that struck me the most suddenly by the second book was that i was beginning to hate the main character Bella. She kept making choices that i couldn't ignore and i personally had a problem with. And yes i'm talking about the whole Jacob/Edward love triangle. I found it so wrong that the whole book basically she is egging Jacob on, flirting with him, making him think he has a chance with her when in fact he is basically just considered one of those rebound type relationships that a person only flocks to after they have had a devastating break up an they need affection and someone to care about them, but know the relationship would probably go no where. And ultimately she is just spending time with him, engaging in self-destructive behavior so Edward will come back to her. Which itself, are such shallow stupid reasons to do anything.
Bella is one of those characters that is just so poorly written. She didn't seem to have much of a personality to me, she's extremely self-destructive through out ALL of the books for no better reason than "I love him!" which is such a dangerous message to give young people, especially young women. She doesn't seem to have any other interests except her obsession with her relationship with Edward.
Edward is also such a flawed character that ultimately i started to find a lot wrong with him as well. The whole 'Stay away from me its best for you!' 'No come back i can't live without you!' got so old i wanted to chuck the books across the room at times. His behavior borderlines on abusive (not physically). He ends up causing her so much emotional pain all while still holding to the fact that its only because he truly loves her. An she always comes running back. Him constantly fighting his desire to kill her and drink her blood i thought would be an interesting aspect of the story, but Bella seemed to not even be a little concerned about this fact and actually almost seemed to egg him on.
Ugh. This book just has so many examples of things that people should NEVER do under any circumstances or any relationship. Which begs the question why then are the books so appealing. When i watched the first movie i finally understood. Bella's character is so blank that it is so easy to project yourself into her shoes. The story is basically is one giant female fantasy. I realized this when i was forced to watch an actual Bella on the screen infront of me and realized i didn't give two craps about her. All her character flaws were to apparent, not to mention Kristen Stewart's agonizingly awkward acting style. I think the only reason most people like the series as much as they do is because they get to envision a relationship with a rich, immortal, handsome vampire for a few hours of the day. And most of us are young enough when we read the books that we grab onto this hungrily.
But ultimately i had to give up on this series. It was my last straw in the fourth book where Bella births a vampire baby, and pretty much almost dies because of it. Her baby literally wanted to kill her. This just added to the pile of stupidity that is Bella's reasoning skills that by then i was done. By the time i got to the part of Jacob imprinting on Bella's demon baby i literally had to put the book down and stop reading at disgust of the author. So many horrible indications, not to mention that he was in love with the baby's mother just felt so wrong added on to all the horrible decisions in this book that i couldn't like them anymore.
I just dont understand why someone would rather flock to a series like Twilight, which has absolutely no strong uplifting message, no heroic triumph, no real fight for good in the face of evil. Its basically about a relationship. And i'm all for a story about two people loving each other against all odds, but honestly this book does not even do that very well. I'd rather read a heroine that actually goes out and DOES something worth doing, who doesn't need a guy in her life to make her life complete. Who is actually a heroine. Who is actually strong. Who is imperfect enough to seem real but ultimately ens up fighting for whats really right. Not someone who doubles as her own antagonist.
The only redeeming quality in the books are Alice and Jasper. They just ended up in the wrong story.
