Twilight
discussion
Why do you think people hate twilight so much?

I do believe that i'm entitled to have an opinion & share it since the thread is asking about it. If you don't like my opinion, that's your business. However, you don't lash back at people because your into twilight & others aren't. By the way, I didn't mean any offense in using the word gay. what I meant was that vampires have the image of being dark creature, however, the author made them look like fairies.

So, to get this straight, you hate twilight because because you found the sparkling vampires too jolly?
(Not that I found the idea to be particularly brilliant myself, if I wanted to read about fairies I would of have bought a fairy book, wouldn't I?)
Heidi wrote: "I didnt say it was ignorant to want to have badass vampires. Its ignorant to call people gay, like being "gay" is a bad thing to be."
Oh, it is. If they insist on being gay in the early morning, rise and shine and being all smiles when the average person can at best be bothered to mumble a "Morning" after they had their first shot of coffee.

Although I do think that everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think "haters" should realize that there is more to any book than just criticism. This is a book site. Fans want to get together and talk about the books, not hear over and over again how sparkling is stupid or contradictory posts about the quality of the writing. It gets boring to hear the same complaints over and over again.

1. Sloppy publishing
2. A new conservatism in perceived women’s roles.

I think people hate Twilight so much, once after even possibly liking it, is because of what it's become. I had liked it as what it was before-- a love story which was only that and nothing more. But when people take something more out of it-- that it was brilliant, an epic love story, something that authors should model their relationships after, or something philisophical, something bigger, everything it has become, you can't help but start to dislike it. Dislike it because of what people think it is, and then slowly dislike it more and more until you just hate it for not being everything people think it is, and then really hate it because of the new readers and those people who like it or love it too much because that book is not worth loving.
That is, in my opinion, one of the few excusable reasons people hate Twilight.
But people actually hate Twilight, like Charity said above, because it's popular to hate Twilight, or because they hate the dramatic fandom of Twilight, or what it was-- which are not excusable reasons to hate Twilight. To dislike or hate Twilight, you must dislike or hate the actual book.
For example, the several other-- and I'm referring only to the reasonable ones and not the ones that claim they hate Twilight because Edward is a creeper and so forth-- comments made about Bella's lack of character, the lack of a substantial relationship, and so on.
Also, the hatred is somewhat due to the faces associated with the characters of Twilight, and also less reasonably, because of the movie.
Of course, I also absolutely hate those people who immediately declare, "I HATE Twilight," when the subject approaches, and they don't paticularly dislike it for any reason.
There are plenty of reasons to hate Twilight, but little to no reasons to love it.
Why do you LOVE Twilight?
Hasn't anyone ever heard of creativity? People are constantly making fun of the idea of sparkling vampires, going on and on about how the vampires aren't "real" vampires. Well, that's utter nonsense.
Point-blank: Meyer stepped outside of the box, and she should be commended for that.
There's nothing wrong with a little originality.

I believe there are just as many reasons to love it as there are to hate it.
What this person hates about it could be the exact thing that that person loves about it.

Well thats true origionality is brilliant, i love it, but its just personally that when i think of sparkly vampires i dont think 'epic romance', 'dangerous', sexy or even interesting etc (which you can argue all you like but at least once in the series Meyer tried to convey ALL these things), all i can picture is a childrens hand made card, and well...DISNEY, if Disney were ever to do a film about vampires im bloody sure they would sparkle, assuming Twilight didnt exist obviously ;). Dont get me wrong i love Disney films, they were my childhood, but it means i cant take anything that reminds me of Disney seriously, bottom line vampires are preditors, killers by nature, killing+sparkling is hilarious, and if Twilight was a comedy id say it was amazing, but.... I know this is just my opinion and you have every right to yours. Lets leave it at that, you think its good i think its crappy, simple as, end of. xxx

I'v only read the first one and basically it's not so much a case of "hate it" as of "This is so BORING! Nothing happened till 3/4 way through and when it did I simply didn't care".
But it wasn't written for the likes of me - a cynical old teacher-librarian - and I will say that the student with the quivering lip had read *nothing at all* before she discovered Twilight in fifth grade and now is a passionate reader. So thanks, Stephenie, for getting Taylor reading books! :-)

She was lying to him as much as herself. She didn't know that she was lying to him. Nor has she ever wanted to give him the wrong impression. She wanted the attention, and she was honest about that. But she was also honest that it would never go any where either. It was his choice to stay.

Plenty of women send love letters to serial killers in prisons across the world. It speaks volumes."
huh?

1. Vampires that sparkle
2. Edward is a stalker
3. Bella is too depressing to watch. I mean she sulks around all the time
4. Warewolves who go shirtless in just about every scene
The books are better.

The books are sort of boring. There are no sacrifices on nobody's behalf. It was pretty dumb. Everything turned out to be amazng and just peachy. Where is the fun in that?

I wasn't aware I lashed back at you - I was just talking. I haven't lashed out at anyone for disliking Twilight, there are some other aspects of the conversation that I don't like. But everyone is allowed to dislike Twilight - I'm not a freakish fan who thinks everyone should obsess over it. I'm sure you didn't mean 'gay' the way you used it, it's just not nice to use it that way at all. I think the vampires being sparkly is rather interesting, I know it's associated with something cute and fun. But it could also be dark fairies, evil witches, etc. Or think of beautiful things in nature that are very dangerous, the beauty is there to entice the prey. In the Cullens' family, that wouldn't make a difference. But the other vampires in the book are dark creatures who view humans as prey.

If you could change any aspect of the Twilight novels, which would it be and why? It could be from a particular book, or the whole series.

...but, lets be honest the two main characters totally suck, I mean Bella is so whiny and indecisive and Edward is a control freak...I kept thinking Get a grip, people! No normal person would act like that or tolerate this behaviour!!!

After reading Twilight I found other series that I loved even more and then started realizing that Twilight was missing so much and it wasn't the epic story I once believed it to be. But still, it was the beginning of an urban fantasy/paranormal love for me and I'll always give it that credit.

That is so true. Although, the books are a little too depressing to read at some points.

That is sort of the same for me. I wasn't into the whole idea of paranormal love and horror before I read Twilight. Now, that is all I read. I loved Twilight, and then I read other series in the same genre and realized that Twilight sucks. Even the movie's aren't that good, but I still want to see how much they changed Bella in Breaking Dawn 2 the movie.

What did she say?

I didn't like the Vampire Diarie's books as much as I do the series, and Damon is so hot. I did read Vampire Academy and loved it and you are completley correct.

Yeah, that is so true. Jake's hair isn't long in the second half of New Moon and the rest of the series, because he is now a wolf and he had to cut it or his fur would have been trailing on the ground.

The thing is. There is a line between good fiction and bad fiction. Even though it's an entirely different genre, Scifi movies are a prime example.
Let's take two creature movies.. let's just say The first few Alien movies compared to some horribly and cheaply made movie that Syfy produced.
Do you really think that defending and passing off sparkling vampires as a poor attempt of being unique in the fantasy genre is still a good idea?
I know that movies and books aren't always the same but (to me anyway) the thought process behind the two aren't so different.

It's a discussion about everything and anything about Twilight. Not just about how much you guys seem to obsess over it.

Also not just about how terribly awful some of you think it is.

Everyone likes or dislikes something for their own reasons. Everyone is different.

What you like is what you like and that's fine, but it seems to me you feel a bit insecure about the fact that there are others that dislike something you like. There is no need to let yourself worry about it. Like what you like, don't let me define your self-esteem. :)

LOL he is hilarious

Well, I posted a who do you think Bella should have chosen discussion.

If it is perfect in your opinion, there is no need for you to try to shove your opinion down our throats. There are far better books out there I would much rather read. And before you open your mouth and say that I need to read the books, believe me. I have read them and regret picking that trash up.

I think it's the very idea of hating Twilight—I think it has little to do with the books themselves."
in some ways yes an no."
Care to elaborate on that?
