Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Haha. And I was feeling so good about getting everything done!

And done. Calculated at 550 pages, and that agrees with the edition with the dust cover.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Yes, and done - sorry I didn't see that wasn't already there.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments I'm fairly sure GR librarians don't have any adjustments that they can employ for this...but I thought I would try to at least satisfy my curiosity. In the Seasonal Reading Challenge I was planning to post The Volcano, Montserrat and Me: Twenty years with an active volcano in a category that requires the MPG to include "Travel"...which this book DID when I slotted it for this task. Now, the book isn't showing any MPG genres. Why would that be?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ed wrote: "I'm fairly sure GR librarians don't have any adjustments that they can employ for this...but I thought I would try to at least satisfy my curiosity. In the Seasonal Reading Challenge I was planning..."

You're right, we don't have any control over that, and the answer as to why it wouldn't show genres is one I don't know. And that section is fluid, which is why here at RwS we allow you to lock in such things.

But does it have to be a MPG or can it just be shelved as? I can see the first review has a travel shelf, which is where the MPGs come from.

They are requiring that it be the MPG. The SRC also permits one to lock in the MPG...but I didn't think I was at risk on this one... ugh!

But thanks for getting back to me. Maybe I'll wait a while and see if the MPGs show up again.

Mary | 1398 comments I am looking at reading this book for French Guiana. I am not sure whether the publication date is 2012 or 1929? Thanks for the help.

Outrage: An Anarchist Memoir of the Penal Colony by Clément Duval

According to wikipedia, it was originally published in 1929 in French. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clément.... The English translation was published in 2012. See Reference number 2 of the wikipedia article.

Could a librarian look at this and determine page count? There are two electronic versions at about 100 pages and one paper edition listed on Goodreads without pages. Thanks for the help

I find only the 2 digital editions both of which have 100 pages. (The edition without a cover was a duplicate without any details and it is being merged.)

Thanks Elizabeth. Since it is exactly 100 pages can it be used for RWS?

Mary | 1398 comments Oops, just went to mark this as read, and it seems the MPE has changed and is now an edition that has less than 100 pages! So the question is moot. . . .

I am not sure what the date should be for Matilda by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

It was written in 1819 but not published until 1959. Please see:

I'm sorry Mary. I cannot see where the page count for this edition has changed recently. As it has more than twice the ratings of the next edition it would surprise me if the MPE has changed very recently. But I checked worldcat as our go to source for reliable page counts to see if I could help, and unfortunately it shows just 92 pages for this edition. I'm not very much help this time.

EDIT: Ahhh. I think I see what may have happened. The editions needing combining as there were two (or more) works. That last happened on July 23.

Mary | 1398 comments Here is an odd book that works for 30.1 Countries project But there are issues with the book listing and page count that may disqualify it as too short. Can a librarian take a look and let me know what you think?

Narrative of the Wreck of the 'Favorite' on the Island of Desolation by John Nunn

1. I have a scanned copy of the book from the Hathi Trust https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?i... which has 227 pages of numbered text plus advertising etc at the end

2. The Goodreads record shows 66 pages which looks like it was picked up from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/123...

The listed ISBN links to https://www.amazon.com/Narrative-wrec... which has 276 pages

3. Worldcat shows the original 1850 edition and fairly recent reprints all with 236+ pages

4. Also the author appears to be the wrong John Nunn ( bio says he id a current chess expert).

Thanks for the help.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments There are things wrong there, like the author which I can fix, but I can't change the page count. This ISBN (not the hardcover) is the MPE. I don't have a better source than Amazon for that edition.

Thanks for taking a look. I figured it might be a problem, but it never hurts to ask since it looked so odd compared to the actual book.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Always OK to ask. I do question that it is a facsimile when the original has more pages, but there is nothing I can do about that absent a copy in hand.

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments Not that it makes a difference to style points, but the perfectionist side of me can’t ignore that I think that the Goodreads recorded publication date of a book I just finished may be incorrect.

Coronation Everest has its original publication date listed as 1970. However I noticed the copyright information in my edition states copyright 1958. I have also found a listing at Worldcat showing an edition published in 1958: https://www.worldcat.org/title/corona...

Would a librarian mind checking and updating this if needed. Thank you!

Thank you. Yes, 1958 is correct. Feel free to report any such discrepancies. Working to make the catalog right is what GRs volunteer librarians do.

message 639: by Karen Michele (last edited Mar 06, 2021 10:01AM) (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments I just finished Thrive and one of the authors, Erin Jones, is some one I know. The Author that is linked on the page as a Goodreads author is a different Erin Jones. The Erin Jones I know does not have a Goodreads author page or account. I searched high and low in the librarians group, but could not find a way to remedy this. Does anyone else know? She will be coming out with her own book August 1st and I'd love to promote it on Goodreads (just in general, not in groups).
Also, I added the book to a number of listopias today, but they don't show up on the book's homepage. Do you know what it takes for those listopias to show up?
If no one knows without spending time finding out, no worries, I'll just pursue it on the librarian's page.

message 640: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Mar 06, 2021 10:13AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Goodreads disambiguates authors by putting additional spaces in the name. I moved her to the 3-space profile. Erin^^^Jones where ^ is a space, but the names appear normally on the page.

If her own book is imported from Amazon, it will come to the 1-space profile and will need to be moved. However, if the ISBN or ASIN is known before release, the book page can be set up with the 3-space name and the import won't touch it.

As to the listopia question, the book page is heavily cached. I think some changes take 24- to 48-hours to appear, but I don't know about listopia specifically.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments Thank you so much, Elizabeth. I'm going to be trying to encourage her to have an author page, but she is a very busy lady. It always amazes me how many readers I run into who are not on Goodreads (or any other bookish platform) when I spend so much time here discovering books!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments That is unfortunate. A quick Google search didn't show that there was one and I was hoping you could show me Google was wrong this time. I think this is one that should be marked Not a Book on Goodreads.

But save it to read another time. We will offer that task "Choose Your Own Collection" again in the future and you can read it then.

Ok. I'm grasping at straws for a short story for this season's 10.1.
